Differential Vector Calculus Differential Vector Calculus Steve Rotenberg CSE291: Physics Simulation UCSD Spring 2019 Fields • A field is a function of position x and may vary over time t • A scalar field such as s(x,t) assigns a scalar value to every point in space. An example of a scalar field would be the temperature throughout a room • A vector field such as v(x,t) assigns a vector to every point in space. An example of a vector field would be the velocity of the air Del Symbol • The Del symbol 훻 is useful for defining several types of spatial derivatives of fields 휕 휕 휕 푇 훻 = 휕푥 휕푦 휕푧 • Technically, 훻 by itself is neither a vector nor an operator, although it acts like both. It is used to define the gradient 훻, divergence 훻 ∙, curl 훻 ×, and Laplacian 훻2 operators Gradient • The gradient is a generalization of the concept of a derivative 휕푠 휕푠 휕푠 푇 훻푠 = 휕푥 휕푦 휕푧 • When applied to a scalar field, the result is a vector pointing in the direction the field is increasing and the magnitude indicates the rate of increase • In 1D, this reduces to the standard derivative (slope) Gradient • The gradient 훻푠 is a vector that points “uphill” in the direction that scalar field s is increasing • The magnitude of 훻푠 is equal to the rate that s is increasing per unit of distance 훻푠 훻푠 훻푠=0 훻푠 훻푠 훻푠=0 Divergence • The divergence of a vector field is a scalar measure of how much the vectors are expanding 휕푣 휕푣푦 휕푣 훻 ∙ 퐯 = 푥 + + 푧 휕푥 휕푦 휕푧 • For example, when air is heated in a region, it will locally expand, causing a positive divergence in the region of expansion • The divergence operator works on a vector field and produces a scalar field as a result Divergence • The divergence is positive where the field is expanding: 훻 ∙ 퐯 > 0 • The divergence is negative where the field is contracting: 훻 ∙ 퐯 < 0 • A constant field has zero divergence, as can many others: 훻 ∙ 퐯 = 0 Curl • The curl operator produces a new vector field that measures the rotation of the original vector field 푇 휕푣 휕푣푦 휕푣 휕푣 휕푣푦 휕푣 훻 × 퐯 = 푧 − 푥 − 푧 − 푥 휕푦 휕푧 휕푧 휕푥 휕푥 휕푦 • For example, if the air is circulating in a particular region, then the curl in that region will represent the axis of rotation • The magnitude of the curl is twice the angular velocity of the vector field Curl • A counter-clockwise rotating field has a curl vector pointing out of the screen towards the viewer, perpendicular to the rotation plane • A constant vector field has zero curl: 훻 × 퐯 = 0 0 0 푇 Laplacian • The Laplacian operator is one type of second derivative of a scalar or vector field 휕2 휕2 휕2 훻2 = 훻 ∙ 훻 = + + 휕푥2 휕푦2 휕푧2 • Just as in 1D where the second derivative relates to the curvature of a function, the Laplacian relates to the curvature of a field • The Laplacian of a scalar field is another scalar field: 휕2푠 휕2푠 휕2푠 훻2푠 = + + 휕푥2 휕푦2 휕푧2 • And the Laplacian of a vector 훻2푠 = + + 휕푥2 휕푦2 휕푧2 Numerical Representation of Fields Computational Vector Calculus • Now that we’ve seen the basic operations of differential vector calculus, we turn to the issue of computer implementation • The Del operations are defined in terms of general fields • We must address the issue of how we represent fields on the computer and how we perform calculus operations on them Numerical Representation of Fields • Mathematically, a scalar or vector field represents a continuously variable value across space that can have infinite detail • Obviously, on the computer, we can’t truly represent the value of the field everywhere to this level, so we must use some form of approximation • A standard approach to representing a continuous field is to sample it at some number of discrete points and use some form of interpolation to get the value between the points • There are several choices of how to arrange our samples: – Uniform grid – Hierarchical grid – Irregular mesh – Particle based Uniform Grids • Uniform grids are easy to deal with and tend to be computationally efficient due to their simplicity • It is very straightforward to compute derivatives on uniform grids • However, they require large amounts of memory to represent large domains • They don’t adapt well to varying levels of detail, as they represent the field to an even level of detail everywhere Uniform Grids Hierarchical Grids • Hierarchical grids such as quadtrees and octrees attempt to benefit from the simplicity of uniform grids, but also have the additional benefit of scaling well to large problems and varying levels of detail • The grid resolution can locally increase to handle more detail in regions that require it • This allows both memory and compute time to be used efficiently and adapt automatically to the problem complexity Hierarchical Grids Hierarchical Grids Irregular Meshes • Irregular meshes are built from primitive cells (usually triangles in 2D and tetrahedra in 3D) • Irregular meshes are used extensively in engineering applications, but less so in computer animation • One of the main benefits of irregular meshes is their ability to adapt to complex domain geometry • They also adapt well to varying levels of detail • They can be quite complex to generate however and can have a lot of computational overhead in highly dynamic situations with moving objects • If the irregular mesh changes over time to adapt to the problem complexity, it is called an adaptive mesh Irregular Mesh Adaptive Meshes Particle-Based (Meshless) • Instead of using a mesh with well defined connectivity, particle methods sample the field on a set of irregularly distributed particles • Particles aren’t meant to be 0 dimensional points- they are assumed to represent a small ‘smear’ of the field, over some radius, and the value of the field at any point is determined by several nearby particles • Calculating derivatives can be tricky and there are several approaches • Particle methods are very well suited to water and liquid simulation for a variety of reasons and have been gaining a lot of popularity in the computer graphics industry recently Particle Based Field Representations • Each method uses its own way of sampling the field at some interval • Each method requires a way to interpolate the field between sample points • Each method requires a way to compute the different spatial derivatives (훻, 훻 ⋅, 훻 ×, 훻2) Derivative Computation Uniform Grids & Finite Differencing • For today, we will just consider the case of uniform grid • A scalar field is represented as a 2D/3D array of floats and a vector field is a 2D/3D array of vectors • We will use a technique called finite differencing to compute derivatives of the fields Finite     Chapter 4 Finite Difference Gradient Information In the masters thesis Thoresson (2003), the feasibility of using gradient- based approximation methods for the optimisation of the spring and damper characteristics of an off-road vehicle, for both ride comfort and handling, was investigated. The Sequential Quadratic Programming (SQP) algorithm and the locally developed Dynamic-Q method were the two successive approximation methods used for the optimisation. The determination of the objective function value is performed using computationally expensive numerical simulations that exhibit severe inherent numerical noise. The use of forward finite differences and central finite differences for the determination of the gradients of the objective function within Dynamic-Q is also investigated. The results of this study, presented here, proved that the use of central finite differencing for gradient information improved the optimisation convergence history, and helped to reduce the difficulties associated with noise in the objective and constraint functions. This chapter presents the feasibility investigation of using gradient-based successive approximation methods to overcome the problems of poor gradient information due to severe numerical noise. The two approximation methods applied here are the locally developed Dynamic-Q optimisation algorithm of Snyman and Hay (2002) and the well known Sequential Quadratic 47 CHAPTER 4. FINITE DIFFERENCE GRADIENT INFORMATION 48 Programming (SQP) algorithm, the MATLAB implementation being used for this research (Mathworks 2000b). This chapter aims to provide the reader with more information regarding the Dynamic-Q successive approximation algorithm, that may be used as an alternative to the more established SQP method. Both algorithms are evaluated for effectiveness and efficiency in determining optimal spring and damper characteristics for both ride comfort and handling of a vehicle.

    The Mean Value Theorem Math 120 Calculus I Fall 2015 The central theorem to much of differential calculus is the Mean Value Theorem, which we'll abbreviate MVT. It is the theoretical tool used to study the first and second derivatives. There is a nice logical sequence of connections here. It starts with the Extreme Value Theorem (EVT) that we looked at earlier when we studied the concept of continuity. It says that any function that is continuous on a closed interval takes on a maximum and a minimum value. A technical lemma. We begin our study with a technical lemma that allows us to relate 0 the derivative of a function at a point to values of the function nearby. Specifically, if f (x0) is positive, then for x nearby but smaller than x0 the values f(x) will be less than f(x0), but for x nearby but larger than x0, the values of f(x) will be larger than f(x0). This says something like f is an increasing function near x0, but not quite. An analogous statement 0 holds when f (x0) is negative. Proof. The proof of this lemma involves the definition of derivative and the definition of limits, but none of the proofs for the rest of the theorems here require that depth. 0 Suppose that f (x0) = p, some positive number.     Curl, Divergence and Laplacian What to know: 1. The definition of curl and it two properties, that is, theorem 1, and be able to predict qualitatively how the curl of a vector field behaves from a picture. 2. The definition of divergence and it two properties, that is, if div F~ 6= 0 then F~ can't be written as the curl of another field, and be able to tell a vector field of clearly nonzero,positive or negative divergence from the picture. 3. Know the definition of the Laplace operator 4. Know what kind of objects those operator take as input and what they give as output. The curl operator Let's look at two plots of vector fields: Figure 1: The vector field Figure 2: The vector field h−y; x; 0i: h1; 1; 0i We can observe that the second one looks like it is rotating around the z axis. We'd like to be able to predict this kind of behavior without having to look at a picture. We also promised to find a criterion that checks whether a vector field is conservative in R3. Both of those goals are accomplished using a tool called the curl operator, even though neither of those two properties is exactly obvious from the definition we'll give. Definition 1.     Vector Calculus Independent Study Unit 5: Vector Fields A vector field is a function which associates a vector to every point in space. Vector fields are everywhere in nature, from the wind (which has a velocity vector at every point) to gravity (which, in the simplest interpretation, would exert a vector force at on a mass at every point) to the gradient of any scalar field (for example, the gradient of the temperature field assigns to each point a vector which says which direction to travel if you want to get hotter fastest). In this section, you will learn the following techniques and topics: • How to graph a vector field by picking lots of points, evaluating the field at those points, and then drawing the resulting vector with its tail at the point. • A flow line for a velocity vector field is a path ~σ(t) that satisfies ~σ0(t)=F~(~σ(t)) For example, a tiny speck of dust in the wind follows a flow line. If you have an acceleration vector field, a flow line path satisfies ~σ00(t)=F~(~σ(t)) [For example, a tiny comet being acted on by gravity.] • Any vector field F~ which is equal to ∇f for some f is called a con- servative vector field, and f its potential. The terminology comes from physics; by the fundamental theorem of calculus for work in- tegrals, the work done by moving from one point to another in a conservative vector field doesn’t depend on the path and is simply the difference in potential at the two points.
