    ART & ARCHITECTURE DESIGN CULTURAL STUDIES NEW AND RECENT TITLES THE MIT PRESS Muriel Cooper David Reinfurt and Robert Wiesenberger Foreword by Lisa Strausfeld Afterword by Nicholas Negroponte Muriel Cooper (1925–1994) was the pioneering designer who created the iconic MIT Press colophon (or logo)— seven bars that represent the lowercase letters “mitp” as abstracted books on a shelf. She designed a modernist monument, the encyclopedic volume The Bauhaus (1969), and the graphically dazzling and controversial first edition of Learning from Las Vegas (1972). She used an offset press as an artistic tool, worked with a large-format Polaroid camera, and had an early vision of e-books. Cooper was the first design director of the MIT Press, the cofounder of the Vis- ible Language Workshop at MIT, and the first woman to be granted tenure at MIT’s Media Lab, where she developed software interfaces and taught a new generation of design- ers. She began her four-decade career at MIT by designing vibrant printed flyers for the Office of Publications; her final projects were digital. This lavishly illustrated volume documents Cooper’s career in abundant detail, with prints, sketches, book covers, posters, mechanicals, student projects, and photographs, from her work in design, teaching, and research at MIT. A humanist among scientists, Cooper embraced dynamism, simultaneity, transparency, and expressiveness across all the media she worked in. More than two decades after her career came to a premature end, Muriel Cooper’s legacy is still unfolding. This beautiful slip-cased volume, designed by Yasuyo Iguchi, looks back at a body of work that is as contemporary now as it was when Cooper was experimenting with IBM Selectric typewriters.

    Sunday, April 19, 2020 Parents, today our Bible story is on John 20:19-23. Please open your Bible and read this passage of Scripture with your children. Overview (for younger preschoolers, read only what is in BOLD) On the first day of the week, in the evening, Jesus’ friends met together in a house. They locked the doors because they were afraid. They didn’t want to be killed too. But now some of the friends were saying they had seen Jesus alive. Could it be true? As the friends talked, Jesus came and stood right there with them. “Peace to you!” He said. Jesus’ friends were afraid! Was this really Jesus? Maybe they were seeing a ghost. “Why are you afraid? It’s Me!” Jesus said. “Look at Me. Touch Me. A ghost does not have skin and bones, but I do. I am not a ghost.” Jesus showed them His hands and His side. They saw where Jesus had been hurt. Now Jesus was alive! What good news! The friends laughed and danced and sang songs because they were so happy to see Jesus! Jesus’ friends gave Jesus some fish to eat. Jesus talked to them and explained the Bible to them. “The Bible is about Me,” Jesus said. Then Jesus told them that they had a job to do. Jesus had died and was raised from the dead so that people could be forgiven for their sins. Jesus’ friends needed to tell other people to turn away from sin and be forgiven. “Peace to you!” Jesus said again.

A. WOMAN BREAK ON THROUGH LIGHT MY FIRE Amended set list straight from the horse’s mouth (i.e. the band themselves) played in two sets between 8.15 and 11.20 p.m. with a 20 minute break in between! That’s 26 songs including all 5 long epic songs (When the Music’s Over, Riders on the Storm, The End, L.A. Woman and Light My Fire!) I’m The Doors Experience Alter Schlachthof Wels 21 February 2015 using too many exclamation marks but they are necessary, believe me! Oops, there goes another one. Old loves die hard: I have been a fan of The Doors since I was 16 years old. You do the maths how long ago, it’s too depressing for me. As well as two other Doors cover bands (one from Vienna, one from Berlin) I saw Ray Manzarek (R.I.P., sadly) solo (on my honeymoon to boot!), Robby Krieger solo in New York (coincidentally, whilst being on holiday) and The Doors 21K/Riders on the Storm/Manzarek-Krieger [they had to change the name of the band repeatetly because of John Densmore’s veto; he went to court about this and eventually wrote a book about the legal struggles between him and Ray +Robby entitled The Doors Unhinged] three times feat.

    Five to One: Rethinking the Doors and the Sixties Counterculture 1 CHRISTOPHER CRENSHAW “Five to One” is an evocative phrase. For listeners aware of the Doors song by the same title, it can bring to mind images of sex, fear, death, freedom, revolution, or simply drugs and alcohol. It can be a good-time anthem or a sobering indictment of the sixties. For listeners in the sixties, this double meaning was likely intentional. The song’s lyrics are loaded with double- or triple-meanings. In the 1968 recording from the LP Waiting for the Sun, lead singer Jim Morrison’s vocals are at times audibly slurred; but the song starts off strong. “Love my girl, she lookin’ good,” Morrison almost whispers into the microphone, establishing a sexual tone from the beginning before letting his listeners know that “no one here gets out alive.” Joan Didion remarked on this sex/death duality in an essay in The White Album (1979). The Doors, she claimed, were “missionaries of apocalyptic sex.” They “seemed unconvinced that love was brotherhood and the Kama Sutra” and “insisted that love was sex and sex was death and therein lay salvation.”2 Other double meanings in the song are equally illustrative. In the next stanza Morrison sings, “they got the guns, but we got the numbers.” At face value, the lyric can be interpreted as an overt political message. The police may have “the guns,” but the people “got the numbers.” Organist Ray Manzarek, however, revealed another meaning of the song in a 1968 interview in Life magazine.
