  • The Neurotic Superhero
THE NEUROTIC SUPERHERO From Comic Book to Catharsis There’s a historical pattern around the popularity of the superhero—he or she is most needed during dark times in the real world. In Captain America: The First Avenger, when Steve Rogers/Captain America (Chris Evans) visits the US troops to boost morale, it’s more than mere fiction; it’s art imitating life. Sales of comic books actually increased during the Second World War. Service men and women needed such stories of bravery and triumph as an inspiration, to which they could also escape. Comics were portable, easy to share and inexpensive. The Golden Age of Comics began during the Great Depression, and it’s perhaps no coincidence that the game-changing movie for our current generation of superheroes, Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight, was released in 2008—the same year that saw the worst global economic crisis since the 1930s. We needed a hero; 2008 also happened to be the year that President Obama was first elected into office. The Dark Knight paved the way for the superhero shows and movies we’re still watching, a decade later. Of course, it wasn’t the first edgy, darker iteration of !1 the comic book superhero—Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man series and Tim Burton’s version of Batman had started to push the boundaries, together with the X-Men franchise, which focuses on the persecution and genocide of minority “mutant” superheroes. But it is Nolan’s Bruce Wayne/Batman (Christian Bale) who crosses that line: he’s not just heroic but deeply flawed.

  • ANNUAL REPORT 2019 to Our Bay Scholars Community
BAY SCHOLARS ANNUAL REPORT 2019 To our Bay Scholars Community s I reflect on the past year for Bay Scholars, I find myself grateful to be in community with our Scholars, partner schools, and community partners. I am delighted to share the 2019 annual report for Bay Scholars. This report is compiled as the twelfth—and largest—class of Bay Scholars settles into their respective high school communities, beginning their journey to higher education. Over the past decade, Bay Scholars has grown to serve 500 students at 14 schools across five counties in the Bay Area. The work of Bay Scholars focuses on identifying talented students who face significant socioeconomic challenges, and connecting them with high-quality educational opportunities to support their academic, social-emotional, and personal development. To help their success, Bay Scholars actively engages students on their educational journey. Opportunities such as mentorship, college campus visits, summer leadership programs, and professional and community events enrich student development as they prepare for college. From its inception, Bay Scholars has aimed to be a hub for change. By maintaining a focus on college matriculation and completion, this goal is materializing. One hundred percent of Bay Scholars students have matriculated to college. In the pages ahead, you will meet some of our students, like Simone Fernandez, Bay Scholars Class of 2019, and learn what drives them. You will see the impact they are beginning to have in their communities—impact made possible by access to education. The growth of Bay Scholars is exciting for our community, and we recognize this would not be possible without the generous investment of our donors.

USC SCHOOL OF CINEMATIC ARTS CTWR 516: ADVANCED MOTION PICTURE SCRIPT ANALYSIS 2 units Spring 2016 Professor: Tom Abrams Email: [email protected] DA: Jeremy Palmer Email: [email protected] Section: 19449R Day/Time: WED, 1 – 4:50PM Location: SCA 112 Office hours: By Appointment In a recent poll taken by the Directors Guild, it was discovered that 75% of their members got their start directing scripts that they wrote or co-wrote. When Alfred Hitchcock and David Lean were asked about film schools and how to teach film directing, both agreed that students should not be given equipment until their second year: “students should first make films with their typewriters.” George Lucas looked back at his education at USC and advised more time should be spent on writing. The comment heard most often from graduating production students and alumni over the years is: "I wish I had spent more time on my writing." In fact many students, upon screening their award-winning thesis films and 546's, were not offered a twenty-five million dollar picture to direct, but asked: "Do you have a script?" Hopefully by the end of CTWR 516 you will have gained a great deal of insight into the workings of feature screenplays, helping you along the path of writing them yourselves. In this class we will share the experience of viewing and enjoying a number of films - made at different times and with contrasting narrative approaches - and work together to discover how these Abrams – CTWR 516 – Spring 2016 2 films were put together, what screenwriting methods were employed, and how these techniques can help us become better screenwriters and film makers ourselves.
