The primary focus was on Public Sector Energy Efficiency Performance keeping crews separate from one another. The Incident Table below for the third quarter of 2020 shows an increase from 289 incidents in 2019 to 307 incidents in 2020. This is mainly accounted for by an increase in house fires. When these numbers are added to the previous quarter, there is expected to be a large increase in the total number of incidents in 2020, compared to 2019. The average mobilisation times for fires in the third quarter in Dundalk and Drogheda fulltime brigades are approximately 1¼ minutes which is lower than the 2019 third quarter average. Retained average mobilisation times have also reduced compared with 2019.

A media press release and a radio interview were arranged to advise the public on the necessary precautions to reduce the risk of fires and injuries during Halloween. There were six callouts in Drogheda and smaller numbers in Dundalk and Ardee.

A new retained fire fighter completed his three weeks recruits course in and is now in service with Drogheda retained brigade. A second retained fire fighter recruit for Drogheda is awaiting a place on recruit’s course (deferred due to Covid). Recruitment efforts are continuing in other retained brigades.

All public assembly licence applications are now received on line. The number of annual Dance Licence renewals for hotels, nightclubs and other places of assembly was reduced this year. The Fire Prevention Section has four such applications which are adjourned pending a resolution of fire safety issues.

The Fire and Building Control Section is continuing its fire safety inspection and enforcement activity during the period of Level 5 restrictions. A briefing for the Housing Section in relation to Fire Safety and HAP referrals is planned for 11th November.

The review notes that “It is worth calling into ... [the] Museum to see the Peter Rice exhibition but the other floors are worth looking at also... The restrictions imposed by Covid-19 did make for a different museum experience but not enough to make it seem weird or frustrating ... there is enough there to keep you interested and entertained.”

Heritage

The Heritage Office obtained a grant of €15,000 from the new Community Monuments Fund for conservation work on Drogheda’s town wall at Featherbed Lane. Works will involve removing the bush growing out of the top of the wall and restoring the wall. This is a highly-visible section of the town wall, close to Laurence's Gate. It is hoped that the Community Monuments Fund, which began this year, will expand in future. The Heritage Council awarded a Community Grant for the development of a safety and disabled access plan for Bellew’s Castle (the Louis Convent at Castletown, Dundalk).

As part of the Coastwatch survey (an international survey of litter and, more recently, biodiversity on our coasts), the Heritage Officer surveyed 13 500m survey units.

The National Heritage Week Awards were awarded virtually by the Heritage Council. Carlingford Lough Heritage Trust was the County Louth winner for its ‘A glimpse behind the Shopfront’ exhibition.
