My thanks go to the City of Cascais and the Portuguese Government for co-hosting the event . The Horasis Global Meeting aims to be the world ’s foremost annual gathering of business leaders who interact with heads of governments, key ministers and eminent thought leaders. The meeting’s purpose is to advance solutions to the most critical challenges facing corporations today. Participants share a common interest in mapping our global economies. Under the theme ‘Catalyzing the Benefits of Globalization ’, participants will share insights on the current state of the world which seems to become more fragile and fractious. We must at this time re-generate the idea of globalization in the face of growing populism. This will ensure the future is more stable and will lead young people to be inspirational in the future. The Horasis Global Meeting shall devise novel ideas to sustain and nurture our development in the future. I wish you a thought-provoking and exceptional meeting. Dr. Frank-Jürgen Richter Chairman Horasis: The Global Visions Community Switzerland 2 Dear friends, It is with an enormous satisfaction that we welcome you to the Horasis Global Meeting. For the fourth time in a row, we host a Horasis event with open arms. This is starting to become a tradition – a healthy tradition. This year we address the debate on Globalization. Thanks to Globalization humanity is healthier than ever. Citizens live much longer. Millions were pulled out of poverty. Interdependence made conflicts between nations more unlikely. Though all ideological disputes, these are undisputable gains from globalization. However, growing levels of inequality gave globalization a bad reputation. We need to address these issues with political courage. If we want a liberal order to prevail, we may not be complacent with the globalization of inequality and indifference. We already have an economic globalization. Now it ’s time for a globalization based on values of solidarity, democracy and humanity. On each edition, the cooperation between the Cascais City Council and Horasis has increased in success and ambition. In 2019 this initiative will again put Cascais in the centre of a worldwide debate for four days, including hundreds of hours of debate, with some political and trade agents from all around the planet gathered on the same stage. Once upon a time, a famous US newspaper called Horasis a ‘miniature Davos ’. I apologise for my immodesty, but neither Cascais nor Horasis call for this comparison. In fact, we are not a «miniature» of anything. The relationship between Horasis and Cascais is a relationship between two superlatives, regarding: ideas, hours of debate, speakers and the life quality they embrace for a few days. That this forum might be held in Cascais is, to us and to the world, a reason to be proud. Our motto is that we may be a better place to live in, be it for one day or a lifetime. And, in order to attain our ambition, we need to be the best place to invest in, to start a business or to raise a family. Those who repeatedly participate in Horasis, know what I am talking about. Those who do not know it yet, will soon find it out. I bid you welcome to Cascais. May our home be your home. • Conference on the Future of Europe
BRIEFING Conference on the Future of Europe SUMMARY After many debates and statements of principle in recent years, the time for a more structured discussion on the future of Europe's development has arrived. The Conference on the Future of Europe, announced by the Commission's President Ursula von der Leyen in her inaugural address, is set to start after a long period of standstill owing not only to changed priorities brought by the coronavirus pandemic, but also to lengthy negotiations among the institutions. The aim of the conference is to debate how the EU should develop in the future, identify where it is rising to the challenges of current times, and enhance those areas that need reform or strengthening. A key aspect of this initiative is to bring the public closer to the EU institutions, listen to people's concerns, involve them directly in the process of the Conference and provide an adequate and meaningful response. In this respect, the ambition is to set up pan-European forums for discussion, for the first time ever, where citizens of all Member States can debate the EU's priorities and make recommendations, to be taken into account by the political-institutional powers that be and, ideally, translated into practical measures. The pandemic hit as the preparation of the conference was just beginning and inevitably caused a delay. In March 2021, the European Parliament, the Council of the EU and the European Commission agreed on a joint declaration, laying down the common rules and principles governing the conference. It was agreed that the leadership of the conference would be shared by the three institutions, with the conference chaired jointly by their three presidents.

etnográfica outubro de 2010 14 (3): 497-505 Things we see: Portuguese anthropology on material culture Filomena Silvano CRIA / FCSH-UNL (Portugal) A FEW DAYS AGO, ON A CONVErsatiON WITH A YOUNG STUDENT who wanted to do research on Portuguese cinema and popular c ulture objects, João Leal was explaining to her that to question ourselves about what is put on display is as important as to search for what is concealed. In Portugal, thinking about the path taken by material culture studies over the last three decades should precisely call upon the formulation of such a double interrogation. When Ana Paula Zacarias and I took off to Trás-os-Montes in 1982 – both of us prepared for the “fieldwork” with all the excitement and ignorance of our twenties –, I kept deep in my mind some of those marvellous drawings of objects from the Portuguese rural world executed by Fernando Galhano for the research work carried out by Jorge Dias, Ernesto Veiga de Oliveira and Benjamim Pereira at the Centro de Estudos de Etnologia (Ethnology Studies Centre) and the Museu Nacional de Etnologia (National Museum of Ethnology). Up until then, Portuguese anthropology – both in its Estado Novo ethnographic version1 and through the works led by Jorge Dias, who had tried to draw a more articulated dialogue with foreign scientific literature (Leal 2000, 2006) – had awarded a particular significance to material culture and, by consequence, our academic training had provided us with an appetite we 1 The Portuguese World Exhibition, which took place in 1940, was the most representative moment of the way Estado Novo’s ethnography used the objects from folk culture to think about the nation as a whole.
