1 Welcome

I warmly welcome you to the 2019 Horasis Global Meeting and sincerely hope that you will enjoy the discussions. My thanks go to the City of Cascais and the Portuguese Government for co-hosting the event .

The Horasis Global Meeting aims to be the world ’s foremost annual gathering of business leaders who interact with heads of governments, key ministers and eminent thought leaders. The meeting’s purpose is to advance solutions to the most critical challenges facing corporations today. Participants share a common interest in mapping our global economies.

Under the theme ‘Catalyzing the Benefits of Globalization ’, participants will share insights on the current state of the world which seems to become more fragile and fractious. We must at this time re-generate the idea of globalization in the face of growing populism. This will ensure the future is more stable and will lead young people to be inspirational in the future.

The Horasis Global Meeting shall devise novel ideas to sustain and nurture our development in the future.

I wish you a thought-provoking and exceptional meeting.

Dr. Frank-Jürgen Richter Chairman Horasis: The Global Visions Community Switzerland

2 Dear friends,

It is with an enormous satisfaction that we welcome you to the Horasis Global Meeting. For the fourth time in a row, we host a Horasis event with open arms. This is starting to become a tradition – a healthy tradition.

This year we address the debate on Globalization. Thanks to Globalization humanity is healthier than ever. Citizens live much longer. Millions were pulled out of poverty. Interdependence made conflicts between nations more unlikely. Though all ideological disputes, these are undisputable gains from globalization.

However, growing levels of inequality gave globalization a bad reputation. We need to address these issues with political courage. If we want a liberal order to prevail, we may not be complacent with the globalization of inequality and indifference. We already have an economic globalization. Now it ’s time for a globalization based on values of solidarity, democracy and humanity.

On each edition, the cooperation between the Cascais City Council and Horasis has increased in success and ambition. In 2019 this initiative will again put Cascais in the centre of a worldwide debate for four days, including hundreds of hours of debate, with some political and trade agents from all around the planet gathered on the same stage.

Once upon a time, a famous US newspaper called Horasis a ‘miniature Davos ’. I apologise for my immodesty, but neither Cascais nor Horasis call for this comparison. In fact, we are not a «miniature» of anything. The relationship between Horasis and Cascais is a relationship between two superlatives, regarding: ideas, hours of debate, speakers and the life quality they embrace for a few days.

That this forum might be held in Cascais is, to us and to the world, a reason to be proud. Our motto is that we may be a better place to live in, be it for one day or a lifetime. And, in order to attain our ambition, we need to be the best place to invest in, to start a business or to raise a family. Those who repeatedly participate in Horasis, know what I am talking about. Those who do not know it yet, will soon find it out.

I bid you welcome to Cascais. May our home be your home.

Carlos Carreiras Mayor of Cascais
