I loved Marian from my very first day at school. I met friends who became sisters. My teachers became family. I loved learning, and most importantly, my teachers challenged me to be my best every day. What I didn’t know when I joined Marian is that the school would help me bring my dreams to life. I’ve loved dancing since I was a child. I even tried to teach myself how to dance by watching YouTube tutorials. I was floored when I found out that I could take real dance classes as part of Marian’s Enrichment Program, which empowers students to explore their talents and career interests. I took classes every Tuesday at Marian, performed in four musicals, and joined the Theatre Club. I gained confidence and learned that I could become a successful performer even though I began learning later than most trained dancers. When it came to picking a high school, Marian counselors helped me select environments that offered an array of creative opportunities within a rigorous academic setting. A major benefit of being a part of the Marian family is the Marian scholarships we receive to continue our academic journey at high- performing high schools. Marian also helps us learn how to successfully secure scholarships and financial aid to cover remaining costs. Without Marian, I wouldn’t have been able to continue chasing my dreams. Today, I am a senior at Nerinx, am a part of the Thespian Club, and have appeared in eight musicals and plays. Because I learned time management at Marian, I am balancing a tough course load and achieving a 4.0 GPA! This year, I became one of the few selected out of thousands of applicants to participate in the Missouri Arts Academy Summer Fine Arts Program. I would not have been able to participate in this life-changing experience without Marian’s financial help. Marian paid for my expenses for the program, and I learned so much about the importance of art in our world. This experience gave me the foundation I needed to conquer the Muny! That enormous stage always spoke to my heart, but I never thought I was good enough. Marian taught me that if I applied myself and worked hard, I could achieve anything. After one of the most grueling auditions of my life, I got the part! I danced every night in Footloose, and I felt alive! Thanks to Marian, I’ve planned the rest of my journey, and I know the sky is the limit for me. Next, I plan to get my Bachelor’s in Musical Theatre at Southeast Missouri State University. Because of Marian, I have a fire in my belly. I am receiving an amazing education that provides me with opportunities to be creative and continue challenging myself. One day, I’m going to perform on a Broadway stage. I am so grateful that Marian is helping me to get there. — Nyla Green, Marian Class of 2016 Thank You from Our Leadership Nyla is an incredible young woman, and we’re looking forward to seeing her on Broadway! It’s girls like Nyla who embody the mission of Marian — breaking the cycle of poverty by enabling girls to realize their dreams.
