Welcome from Alan Duncan elcome to the launch of Finding a Place to Call Home: Immigration Win Australia. This is the seventh report in the BCEC Focus on the States Series and explores the profile and evolution of immigration in Australia over recent years and undertakes a comprehensive assessment of the contributions immigrants make to Australia’s social and economic development. Growth in the immigrant share of Australia’s population has led to many debates over the impacts that migrants have had, or will have, on various aspects of life, particularly jobs and wages. Our report provides new evidence to better inform these debates and highlights the positive impact of immigrants to the Australian economy. It also explores the extent of acceptance of multiculturalism in Australia, and provides an assessment of immigrant health and wellbeing. We are becoming a more accepting society, but still have some way to go. There is a special focus on humanitarian migrants and how well they are faring. These migrants come to Australia having experienced terrible persecution and trauma, which will have a lasting impact on their overall health and wellbeing, but it is encouraging to see that the majority of these individuals feel a sense of safety and feel a part of our communities. Immigration is a defining feature of Australia’s economic and social life and will shape the nature of tomorrow’s Australia. We hope that this report goes some way to shed light on this important issue. Thank you to our guest presenters: Dr Anne Aly MP, Federal Member for Cowan; Dr John Byrne, WA Equal Opportunity Commissioner; Ms Tamkin Essa, Multicultural Youth Advocacy Network WA Project Support Officer, Youth Affairs Council WA; and our Master of Ceremonies, Ms Nadia Mitsopoulos, Journalist and Presenter from ABC Radio Perth. On behalf of BCEC, I welcome you to today’s launch and thank you for your continued support of the Centre’s mission to deliver high quality, evidence-based research that contributes to the wellbeing of West Australian families, businesses and communities.
