It was the first Wailers concept' album, conceived as a long/player based on a rebellious theme, rather than a collection of A5 isolated singles, and the presence of the Barrett Brothers in the rhythm section pointed the way for greater A6 glories to come. The Wailers first formed as an unruly 5/piece in 1963, with Junior Braithwaite as lead singer B1 and Beverley Kelso an early member, sometimes replaced by Cherry Green. The four tracks on this EP represent a bit of a transitional phase for Louis Jaquet (aka Kid Who), marking a A1 move from a basic setup with an MPC2000XL sampler and a computer to a fully-fledged hardware studio. The initial versions of these tracks were quick jams that he had made early on in this change, but which A2 had lay dormant on his hard drive for some time, before being revisited and reworked for this release with the new equipment. 'Rhythm Code' began life as an exercise in using only freely distributed software synths, and the majority of those sounds are still there, bar some additional acid sequences and tweaks to B1 the rhythm parts. On 'ZF Cut' his focus switched to samples, in an effort to squeeze the most he could out of his MPC, which at the time had only recently been upgraded. The unassuming beige box gives colour to anything you feed into it (breakbeats in particular), and a host of basic onboard effects add further quirky B2 character, in this case hollow drones and rumbles which are the core of the track

The band formed in A3 1979 but shortly thereafter relocated to Florence take part in a rich musical scene alongside Neon, B1 Pankow, Alexander Robotnick, and Diaframma. Beginning as a 4-piece (two guitarists, bassist, drummer) B2 they slimmed down to a synthesizer and guitar-based duo by 1982. Their sole release was the now classic B3 ”Maritime Tatami"/"A Game Of Despair" EP from 1983, which we reissued in 2012. ‘Born From The Water’ is a 12 song collection of unreleased demos recorded between 1983 and 1985. The band sent us over 100 C1 cassettes, through which we dug to compile the first volume of their archival darkwave ballads. They used C2 an array of Roland synthesizers (TR-606, TB-303, TR-909, Juno 6) plus a Korg Polysix, Yamaha DX7, Casio VL- C3 Tone VL-1, DR-55 Dr. Rhythm, and Fender Stratocaster and Jazz Bass. Some of the songs would later appear D1 on various compilations, but the versions presented here are unique. Victrola engulfs the listener with trance-inducing synth lines, oblique minor-key bass lines, angular guitar riffs, and melancholic vocals D2 D3

A side 'It's Over VIP' is a flip of the classic Portishead tune 'Biscuit' - and boy, oh boy has he done the original justice and then some! The track is full of rolling basslines and percussion. Odd vocal snips from the original give space to an otherwise unrelenting track that has got classic written all over it. B side 'Unrealistic Voices' with fellow Frenchman Ourman is a moodier affair with its head nodding B1 sub bassline and eastern string melody. Full system pressure from front to back. Quasar and Foundation Audio have pulled out all the stops on this release. Debut records don't come much better than this, so hat's off to Remy for this killa plate
