Prevalence of and Factors Associated with Oral Sex Among Rural and Urban Malawian Men
Kerwin et al. 2012 Prevalence of and Factors Associated with Oral Sex among Rural and Urban Malawian Men Jason Kerwin * Department of Economics, University of Michigan Rebecca Thornton Department of Economics, University of Michigan Sallie Foley Graduate School of Social Work, University of Michigan March 2012 ABSTRACT Despite medical evidence that female-to-male oral sex carries a much lower risk of HIV transmission than unprotected vaginal intercourse, there has been little research on the practice of fellatio in Africa. We use a sample of 1216 men in rural Malawi and 1537 uncircumcised men in urban Malawi to examine the prevalence of oral sex. While 97 percent of the rural sample and 87 percent of the urban sample reported having had vaginal sex just 2 percent and 12 percent respectively said they had ever received oral sex. Only half of the rural sample, and less than three quarters of the urban sample, reported having heard of oral sex. We find that education and condom use predict oral sex knowledge; in contrast, media exposure and beliefs about HIV do not significantly predict knowledge about oral sex after controlling for other confounding factors. The large gap between sexual activity and oral sex prevalence implies substantial scope for fellatio as another safer sex strategy in Malawi and potentially in other African countries as well. * Corresponding author: Thornton, Department of Economics, 611 Tappan St., Ann Arbor, MI, 48109. BREASTWORK ALISON BARTLETT ‘BREASTWORK is a beautifully written and accessible guide to the many unexplored cultural meanings of breastfeeding in contemporary society. Of all our bodily functions, lactation is perhaps the most mysterious and least understood. Promoted primarily in terms of its nutritional benefi ts to babies, its place – or lack of it – in Western culture remains virtually unexplored. Bartlett’s travels through this neglected maternal terrain are both intriguing and inspiring, as she shows how breastfeeding can be a transformative act, rather than a moral duty. Looking at breastfeeding in relation to medicine, the media, sexuality, maternity and race, Bartlett’s study BREASTWORK provides a uniquely comprehensive overview of the ways in which we represent breastfeeding to ourselves and the many arbitrary limits we place around it. BREASTWORK makes a fresh, thoughtful and important contribution BARTLETT to the new area of breastfeeding and cultural studies. It is essential reading for ‘Bartlett’s travels through this neglected all students of the body, whether in the health professions, the social sciences, maternal terrain are both intriguing or gender and cultural studies – and for and inspiring . ’ F IONA GILES all mothers who have pondered the secrets of their own breastly intelligence.’ FIONA GILES author of Fresh Milk: The Secret Life of Breasts UNSW PRESS ISBN 0-86840-969-3 UNSW RETHINKIN G BREASTFEEDING 9 780868 409696 PRESS BreastfeedingCover2print.indd 1 29/7/05 11:44:52 AM BreastWork04 28/7/05 11:30 AM Page i BREASTWORK ALISON BARTLETT is the Director of the Centre for Women’s Studies at the University of Western Australia. -
Natural Law and the Regulation of Sexuality: a Critique
Richmond Journalof Law and the Public Interest S'ummer 2004 Natural Law and the Regulation of Sexuality: A Critique Dr. Brent L. Pickett' The authorwishes to thank David Mapel and PatrickBlythe for their comments and suggestions on previous drafts of this essay. Today, natural law theory offers the most common intellectual defense for the differential treatment of gays and lesbians. Leading natural law theorists, such as John Finnis,2 Robert George,3 and Richard Duncan,4 have eagerly inserted themselves into debates about law and sexuality. If their arguments are sound, it is permissible to treat gays and lesbians differentially as a matter of law. Natural law theorists defend a range of policies in this regard, from anti- sodomy laws, to allowing persons to discriminate against gays and lesbians in employment and housing, to a fierce opposition to same-sex unions or, in their watered-down version, civil unions. In general, natural law theorists believe that it is rational for the state to 'discourage' homosexuality through such policies. Furthermore, they believe that other laws regulating sexuality are permissible and potentially beneficial, such as forbidding the sale of contraceptives to unmarried persons. I will argue that the natural-law understanding of sexuality, and its application to the law, is deeply flawed, in regards to homosexuality and sodomy. I begin by laying out some of the foundations of the natural law position. Central to the position is an account of human goods that are seen as good in themselves, and hence as rational bases for choice and human action. In regards to sexuality, the two most important goods, at least from the natural law perspective, are those of marriage and personal integration. -
The Process of Sexual Becoming Chris Graham City University Of
Running head: EXISTENTIAL SEXUALITIES 1 Existential sexualities: The process of sexual becoming Chris Graham City University of Seattle, Calgary Campus EXISTENTIAL SEXUALITIES 2 Abstract This research project explores the lived experience of sexual becoming from an existential lens. Research linking philosophical conceptions of existential sexualities with lived experience is lacking in existing academic literature, and this research attempts to give voice to lived experience in the process of sexual becoming. A qualitative framework was employed, using a descriptive phenomenological approach to interview participants and identify themes in the existential process of sexual becoming. Key themes of vulnerability, experience, and supports were identified as helping participants in overcoming barriers to the process of sexual becoming, an experience that was engaged in to foster an end goal of enhanced connection. Implications of the existential process of sexual becoming in counselling practice are discussed. Keywords: sexuality, existentialism, phenomenology, counselling EXISTENTIAL SEXUALITIES 3 Existential sexualities: The process of sexual becoming It is unclear how people come into and make sense of their sexualities. Understanding one’s sexualities is integral to the self, with Foucault (1976/1990) noting that it is through “the deployment of sexuality that each individual has to pass in order to have access to his own intelligibility, to the whole of his body, to his identity” (p. 155). This draws attention to the core importance of sexualities in one’s existence, further embedding existential consideration in the navigation of sexualities. This study aims to explore existential sexualities through developing a greater understanding of the lived experience of sexual becoming. As the available number of sex and sexuality identities expands, so too does the potential need and pressure for people to navigate such identities. -

Pedagogy and Homosexuality in Ancient Greece 1. Pederasty and Pedagogy It is clear from a variety of sources that from the Archaic period onwards, pederasty (or adult male to male child love/sex) was part of the gymnasia and hence the educational system. Usually this took the form of intercrural sex, foreplay, and gift- giving to boys. 2. The myth of the Three Sexes (Halperin 19) According to Aristophanes [in Plato's Symposium], human beings were originally round, eight-limbed creatures, with two faces and two sets of genitals--both front and back--and three sexes (male, female, and androgyne). These ancestors of ours were powerful and ambitious; in order to put them in their place, Zeus had them cut in two, their skin stretched over the exposed flesh and tied at the navel, and their heads rotated so as to keep that physical reminder of their daring and its consequences constantly before their eyes. The severed halves of each former individual, once reunited, clung to one another so desperately and concerned themselves so little with their survival as separate entities that they began to perish for lack of sustenance; those who outlived their mates sought out persons belonging to the same sex as their lost complements and repeated their embraces in a foredoomed attempt to recover their original unity. Zeus at length took pity on them, moved their genitals to the side their bodies now faced, and invented sexual intercourse, so that the bereaved creatures might at least put a temporary terminus to their longing and devote their attention to other, more important (if less pressing) matters. -

Miller appeals after being convicted of multiple rape counts in the Mahoning County Common Pleas Court. He contends his constitutional rights were violated when he was convicted of multiple counts which were not differentiated in the indictment or bill of particulars and which he believes were not differentiated in the trial testimony. He also believes this issue raises concerns as to whether the jury unanimously found him guilty of the same acts.
