BULL RUN REPUBLICAN

WOMEN’S CLUB President’s The Bridge - Issue 2019-08 Corner

August 2019

Ladies ~

I hope you are all having a wonderful summer with friends and families, on vacations and at home! I know I have been sending you lots of emails, but hopefully you can discern which ones are of interest to you from the Subject Line. Oh, and by the way, it is going to get worse 

There are many important things coming up in the next couple of months:

August 2 – Wine Tasting at Effingham Manor – bring friends and other prospective members.

August 15 - our evening at the PW County Fair – we need volunteers to talk with voters, register new voters, hand out balloons, etc.

September 19 - Membership Meeting – place and speaker to be announced. However, we will be having an important business meeting to vote on donations for our candidates and elect a Nominating Committee for our 2020 Officers. If you would like to serve on the Committee, please ask someone to nominate you. You may not serve on the Committee for more than two years in a row. Additionally, you may not nominate someone without their consent (so if someone isn’t going to be at the meeting, talk to her beforehand).

Jan is trying to compile contact information for each campaign, and I am compiling a list of various ongoing volunteer opportunities for each campaign. I will send this list out periodically with updates and additions. The Subject Line will be “Campaign Volunteer Activities.” 

I just sent a summary of our campaign volunteer activities to VFRW, and they were blown away by all the things we are doing! I couldn’t be prouder of our Club – everyone steps in and steps up!!!

So once again, Thank You for all that you are doing! Don’t forget to take pictures and send them to Jan and me ([email protected] and [email protected].

As always if you have any questions, feel free to contact me.

August is… the eighth month of the year in the Julian and Gregorian calendar, but was originally the fifth of seven months. In the Roman empire, August had 30 days and was the sixth of ten months, although its originally named was Sextilis, (meaning “sixth month”). Under King Numa Pompilius, an early Roman ruler who is credited with formulating the religious calendar, the month was changed from 30 days to 29. Augustus Caesar later renamed it after himself, and added two extra days so that it would be equal in length to July which was named for Julius Caesar.

August’s flower is the gladiolus, and its’ birthstone is the peridot. August is best known for “the dog days of Summer” - meaning the 40 days from July 3 to August 11. Originally, the “dog days” began when Sirius, “the Dog Star” rose at sunrise. Ancient people sacrificed a brown dog at the start of “the dog days,” believing that the hot sultry weather was the result of Sirius’ anger.

ROADS AND PARKS ON THE NOVEMBER BALLOT

On November 5, voters will have the opportunity to vote on a bond referendum to finance improvements to roads and parks.

Roads Bond:

The Prince William Board of County Supervisors voted 5-3 on Tuesday to place a $355 million road bond question on the ballot Nov. 5. Chairman Corey Stewart and Supervisors Jeanine Lawson (R-Brentsville), Victor Angry (D-Neabsco), Marty Nohe (R- Coles), and Ruth Anderson (R-Occoquan) voted in favor of the referendum, with Supervisors Maureen Caddigan (R-Potomac), Pete Candland (R-Gainesville), and Frank Principi (D-Woodbridge) opposing the referendum.

The road referendum will include funding for the following projects:

 $200 million (of a total cost of $300 million) for widening the Route 28 Bypass; extends Godwin Drive through undeveloped land behind existing neighborhoods (undetermined time frame to complete)  $50 million for widening Devlin Road from Linton Hall to Wellington Rds., a total of 1.8 miles (4-6 years)  $70 million for a new intersection at Prince William Parkway and Minnieville Road – placing the Parkway underground, and Minnieville Road above ground (4-6 years)  $15 million for a flyover ramp from VA Rte. 123 and I-95 to Old Bridge Road (3-5 years)  $20 million for a 4-lane extension of Summit School Road to connect to Caton Hill Rd to provide better access to the Horner Rd commuter lot (3-4 years)

Parks Bond:

The Board voted on two separate bonds for park improvements and approved only one. A $41 million referendum for parks was approved with a 5-3 vote. Stewart, Angry, Nohe, Anderson, and Caddigan voted in favor and Candland, Principi and Lawson voted against the measure. If approved by the voters, the $41 million would include funding for the following projects:

 $6 million for improvements to Howison Park (at Spriggs and Minnieville Roads) where the Youth Soccer League meets; includes trails, seating, comfort station, additional parking, and better access for those with disabilities.  $6 million for new Neabsco Park development in the Neabsco District; includes a climbing wall, play equipment, and an amphitheater.  $6 million for expansion of Fuller Heights Park (in the Potomac District near Triangle); includes two additional fields and added parking.  $3 million for athletic turf fields at Hellwig Park in Independent Hill.  $20 million for countywide trails and open space in four areas: Broad Run Trail, Neabsco Greenway, Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail, and Occoquan Greenway.

ON THE NOVEMBER BALLOT The Virginia Republican (continued from page 5) Creed

A separate $47 million bond issue was defeated with Caddigan, Candland, Lawson, Nohe and Principi voting against and Stewart, Angry and Anderson voting in favor of putting the bond on the November ballot. The defeated measure would have been for an additional $42 million to pay for an aquatic and fitness center in the eastern end of the county and $5 million for a crew boathouse. The Board also voted to remove $10.8 million for We Believe … improvements to Long Park ...That the free enterprise system is the most productive supplier of human needs and economic justice, Removed from consideration:

IMPORTANT INFORMATION (Thank You, Rose!)

One area in which Democrats seem to be far ahead of Republicans is in the registration of new voters. Your help is needed to help register conservative voters (although you must return all registrations you collect, even if you think they may vote Democratic). Rose Schulz recently attended a June 19th discussion regarding third-party registration, and has kindly submitted the following. Many thanks to Rose for this valuable information.

VOTER REGISTRATION DRIVE

On June 19, 2019, Pat Ferguson provided a very thorough discussion on Third Party Voter Registration. Below is the link for the online certification from the VA Department of Elections that is effective July 1, 2019, through June 30, 2020. Individuals will need to complete the certification prior to any Voter Registration drives:

https://www.elections.virginia.gov/registration/registration-drives/training-video.html

Please watch the VA Department of Elections online power point and submit the affidavit. The presentation lasts about 23 minutes and provides a good review of the registration process and general procedures.

When completing the affidavit certifying that you have watched the online presentation, it asks if you are being certified as an individual/part of an organization or as an individual/unaffiliated with an organization. You may register as part of the BRRWC.

You may request 25 voter applications to use at any upcoming events where you will be registering voters. Include in your request other language applications, besides English - this is a Department of Justice requirement.

As a reminder, the Chantilly Gun Show is July 26th -28th - Friday from 3-8 PM; Saturday from 9 AM-5 PM; and Sunday from 10 AM-5 PM. The manager has reserved a Voter Registration table for the entire time. (Linda Bartlett [email protected] is in charge.) Please contact Linda if you are available for shift work.

Be prepared:

1. Review a copy of "Recommended Checklist for Voter Registration Drives". (Form available.) 2. Read and be familiar with the Virginia Voter Registration Application. 3. Confirm that each volunteer has received the state approved training online. 4. Contact the person in charge of the event/store/church/PTA/Metro and make sure that you have permission to host a table for voter registration. Be specific about the date and time. They may ask you what group you are representing. (It is the group listed on your online certification.) 5. Have a print copy of your online certification with you, when you are registering voters. 6. Keep your table decorations non-partisan, yet make it stand out.

7. Distribute copies of the Sworn Affidavit form and two-page Best Practices and Overview for Volunteers to volunteers/staff (pages 4-5). 8. Review a copy of "Frequently Asked Voting Questions - 2019". (Form available.) 09. Be non-partisan - neutral - with ALL your interactions with the community. 10. Place one application (for each language) in a clear sheet protector - so that you may walk individuals through their copy.  10.A. Have plenty of blank voter applications with you.  10.B. Have copies of "Restoration of Rights" available. 11. Place ALL applications either face down or in a folder - maintain visual at all times. 12. Get peoples' attention: Call out - "Did you move within the last two years?" or "Do you need to update your voter registration?" 13. Have a Sign-In Sheet. Each person MUST sign in with name/email before you hand them an application. (Form available.) 14. Ensure that applicants complete the voter registration applications in their entirety. 15. Include assistant's name and address on each application IF assistant signed application due to applicant's physical disability. (Please read signature line on voter registration application.) 16. Provide a receipt to all individuals completing voter registration applications for submission by you. Complete and hand them the tear-off receipt on the application. 17. ALWAYS turn in "abandoned" applications. (Block out the social security number and write "VOID" across the application. 18. Prepare an alphabetical listing of applications that you are to deliver to the local registrar. 19. Deliver any completed voter registration applications to the appropriate registrar within ten days of the applicant's signature or by the next registration deadline, whichever is sooner.

DEADLINE: IF YOU HAVE ANY COMPLETED APPLICATIONS ON TUESDAY, OCTOBER 15TH - PLEASE MAKE SURE THEY ARE DELIVERED TO THE LOCAL REGISTRAR BY 5:00 PM!

One size fits all healthcare

What appears below are the words of Congressman Rob Wittman on the topic of for All. It’s no accident that such a friendly-sounding name was given to a very unfriendly program. Medicare for All would eliminate the current Medicare program and make all private or employer-sponsored healthcare illegal, as well as ban private contracts between you and your physician. If a policy requires that all possible competition be banned in order to be successful, is it likely to be as beneficial as claimed?

Income to the federal government in 2020 is projected to be $3.643 trillion. The cost of Medicare for All is estimated to be, at a minimum, $3.28 trillion per year. This figure assumes that all cost-savings measures (such as a 40% decrease in pay for medical providers) are successful.

A better health care future for Virginia Friend-

When it comes to our broken health care system, we can all agree the status quo isn’t working. The Affordable Care Act showed that government-run healthcare does not sufficiently address the core challenges facing our healthcare system; in many cases, physician choice disappeared and premium costs skyrocketed. Unfortunately, the solutions Democrats have put forward double down on the failures of the Affordable Care Act and relinquish even more control over health care decisions to the federal government. This is not the answer to making sure folks have access to affordable, quality care.

I support a patient-provider centered system that:

 Empowers individuals and families to make decisions for themselves based on what best fits their needs, wants, and budget.  Prohibits insurance companies from denying or not renewing coverage due to a pre-existing condition.  Bans insurance companies from rescinding coverage based on a pre-existing condition.  Bans insurance companies from excluding benefits based on a pre-existing condition.  Prevents insurance companies from raising premiums on individuals with pre-existing conditions who maintain continuous coverage.  Allows young people to stay on a parent's plan.  Eliminates lifetime caps for insurance coverage.

Democrats' Medicare For All Plan would:

 Strip millions of Americans of their current health care plan, regardless of how much they like it.  Outlaw virtually all private and employer-sponsored health plans now covering 158 million Americans.  Dump all Americans into a single, government-run health plan.  Bar all employers from offering separate plans that compete with the new, government-run program.  Eliminate Medicare, Medicare Advantage and Medicare supplemental insurance programs now covering over 58 million senior and disabled Americans.  Lower reimbursement rates to doctors and hospitals, potentially causing providers to leave the profession and force hospitals and doctors to fire employees.  Cost at least $32.6 trillion.

I want to be abundantly clear, I believe in a better health care future for Virginians. This will only happen when individuals can do what’s best for them, not what the government dictates for them. I will continue fighting for patient-provider centered reforms that expand choices for consumers, increase access to care, reduce health care costs, and enhance transparency in our healthcare system.

Sincerely, Rob

Opinions Yours and Mine

Democratic Congressman Gerald Connolly from the 11th District was so annoyed that gun-control legislation was referred to the Virginia State Crime Commission rather than being voted on that he accused Republicans of choosing “to stand in shame with the NRA. That is cowardice.” Not a difference of opinion; not opposing philosophies – but “cowardice.”

He then added, “Enough is enough. We don’t have the luxury of waiting for Republicans in Richmond to abandon their Faustian bargain with the NRA and finally do their jobs. So, in the face of their indifference, I choose to act.” And act he did. He added an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act “ensuring that U.S. service members convicted of domestic violence cannot obtain firearms.

Connolly was not speaking of former military who had been court marshalled due to domestic violence. Nor was he referring to those who have been separated from the military for any reason. He was specifically speaking about active-duty military personnel – you know, those guys and gals who risk their lives to keep us safe, and carry guns to do so.

No one is defending domestic violence. But I’m going to go out on a limb here and conclude that if the military felt the service member could and should remain in the military, the offense was not especially severe. I would likewise conclude that they will remain armed while on duty, despite the fact that Connolly will disarm them while off duty. If we cannot trust our service men and women who have been trained in their use to possess a personal weapon, who can we trust? Is Connolly planning to disarm our police force next? The Congressman clearly has as little respect for our servicemen and women as he does for handguns and rifles. But law enforcement also ranks at the bottom of his list.

The day following his televised amendment, while performing for the cameras, Connolly lost his composure and verbally attacked the former acting head of ICE Thomas Homan. Literally screaming accusations at Homan, Connelly banged the table, and hurled accusation after accusation at Homan, accusing him of indifference, cruelty and “a lack of humanity.” He seemed to believe that Honan had been personally responsible for enticing thousands upon thousands of immigrants to illegally cross the border. True to form, as Homan attempted to respond, Connolly refused to allow an answer, claiming not to care. In a voice that might have been audible a half mile away, a red-faced Connelly cut him off by screeching, "You're not at the border right now! You're in a hearing room! It's my time!"

If Connolly had ever a responsible Congressman representing the people of his district in public service, those days have passed. Instead, he has become a petty tyrant performing for the cameras. The people of the 11th District deserve far better. Volunteers needed for Elections

e espite the fact that the election is still months away, it’s not too soon to volunteer to help out on election day. There are many opportunities with varying degrees of responsibility since volunteers are needed to be precinct captains, poll Welcome to our newest watchers, or to hand out sample ballots. Experience is not necessary. member If you have never worked at the polls before, an excellent way to start is by handing Mary Jo Howarth out sample ballots. Consider volunteering with a friend and working together. This involves standing outside on election day (or during early voting), greeting voters, and We are so pleased to giving them a sample ballot before they enter the polling place. This is especially have you join us! important for the down-ballot candidates. Candidates for the Senate or House will have an “R” or “D” after their names, but other candidates are not identified as Republican or Democrat. All candidates (with the exception of those running for the School Board who traditionally run as Independents) run as Republicans, Democrats, or Independents, but are not identified by party on the ballot; only candidates for the House or Senate are identified by party on the ballot. This makes sample ballots essential.

Often voters will want to vote for all Republican candidates, but may not know every name. This is when having a sample ballot is invaluable, because it identifies the candidates by both name and party. Once inside the polling place, if voters discover that political party isn’t indicated on the ballot once inside the polling place, it is too late. Those working inside the polling place are not allowed to assist the voter to choose a candidate in any way. So, the only way to help these voters is to give them a sample ballot that they can take into the polling place.

Precinct captains are also needed. There are 94 precincts in prince William County, and each one needs a precinct captain. The person who holds this position is in charge of one polling place, making sure there are sufficient volunteers to serve as needed inside and outside the polling place. The precinct captain would also make sure that an adequate supply of sample ballots remains throughout the day, and would answer volunteers’ questions if necessary.

Poll watchers work inside the polling place and watch the proceedings. These volunteers watch over everything inside the polling place. They are watching to see if voters present the required ID, and that voters receive one ballot, or some other evidence of voter fraud or misbehavior by those working inside the polling place. They remain throughout the polling hours and stay until votes have been tallied after the polls close. If the poll watcher discovers evidence of fraud or other misbehavior, they do not handle the issue, but pass the information on to the GOP Chairman or an RPV attorney.

The American Dream and Promise Act of 2019

H.B.6 is worth keeping an eye on. H.B.6, also known as The American Dream and Promise Act of 2019, would undoubtedly cause a massive influx of illegal immigrants that would make the current crisis appear minor in comparison. The promise of amnesty for all and citizenship for many is a very potent lure. The bill would also invite fraudulent claims for amnesty because it provides no consequences for filing fraudulent claims. It enables criminal aliens to obtain green cards and will cause more child trafficking because it provides incentives for those who come with children. It opens our borders to everyone, and in the process, tosses away our sovereignty. And it’s already passed the House.

We can hope that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky) will prevent the bill’s introduction in the Senate, but there is no guarantee. Such a bill would have been unthinkable a year ago,

But consider what would happen if Democrats take the majority in the Senate during the next election. HR 6 and a lot of other equally outrageous Bills will pass both Houses of Congress in short order. In the meantime, Doug Collins (R-GA) spoke in opposition to H.R.6. His reasons made clear why this legislation is dangerous for America. A transcript of his speech appears on pages 28 through page 30. Emphasis is my own.

“Hear me clearly: A person could file a false or frivolous application, and there is no consequence to it.

“CBO has estimated that over the 2020 to 2029 period, the two bills combined to make H.R. 6 would cost

$26.3 billion and $8.3 billion respectively, and that is, frankly, I believe, an underestimate.

“As evidenced by the two floor votes last year, Republicans want to provide legal status for DACA recipients. We want to do it the right way, to minimize fraud, to ensure criminals cannot get legal status, and to bolster border security. Without these commonsense measures and compassionate measures, we will find ourselves repeating this conversation a few years from now.

Madam Speaker, H.R. 6 does none of these things, so I urge my colleagues to oppose this bill. Madam Speaker, I reserve the balance of my time.”

Opinions Yours and Mine

Okay, I’ll admit it. President Trump’s manner of speaking is different from my own. He’s a New Yorker, and I’m a Virginian, which accounts for half the difference. The other half can probably be explained by the fact that we are different genders, which brings with it both cultural and biological differences.

I cringed a bit when Trump suggested that “The Squad” return to their own countries. The fact is, three of the women were born in the U.S., and the fourth is a naturalized citizen. Nevertheless, Trump’s sentiment was easily understood. I think of the foursome as technically American, but far from American in their hearts.

Being born on U.S. soil may confer citizenship. But being “AN AMERICAN” (the all caps version, as I think of it) is not a matter of birth, but a matter of the heart. Being “AN AMERICAN” requires a love of country, and probably means a tear comes to your eye when the National Anthem is played. Being “AN AMERICAN” might mean acknowledging that we are not perfect, but we are a country that is basically good and trying to be the best we can be. It means that while we strive for perfection, we know that we need to nibble around the edges, not tear the country to shreds and begin anew with a radically different concept. This is especially true if those new concepts are the same ones our fathers and grandfathers fought to eradicate from the face of the Earth.

Being “AN AMERICAN” is not unique to any skin tone. It doesn’t require one to be of any particular ethnicity. It’s not even dependent on the place of your birth. Most of the foreign-born Permanent Legal Residents have an even greater love for their adopted country as those of us who were born here, for they have seen life from within and without the U.S. They have learned firsthand that it’s far better to live life within our borders, while the rest of us take our blesssings for granted.

In contrast, we have four female Congresswomen who have done well in America. Each of them holds an office that grants them power and authority, yet they insist that they are the victims of American oppression. The Squad is comprised of Congresswomen Alexandria Ocasio- Cortez (D-NY), (D-Minn), (D-Mass), and (D-Mich), all freshmen women in the House of Representatives. The four have much in common, but the single thing that draws them together is their utter contempt for the country and for our allies, and an apparent affinity for our enemies. All four claim to be victims of American racism, bigotry, xenophobia, white supremacy, and, in the case of Omar and Tlaib, Islamophobia.

Although the four publicly denounce the US for the supposed abuse and inhumane treatment of illegal immigrants detained at the border, the four were the only Democrats to vote against funding to care for those immigrants. They accuse the dedicated men and women who work in immigration-related positions of deliberately withholding essential care for the migrants because they enjoy cruelty; they accuse Border Control of raping children and forcing women to drink from toilets; and claim that ICE is a terrorist group that grabs innocent people off the streets “just because they can.”

The Squad would end capitalism and impose their vision on the country. That vision includes the redistribution of wealth as they see fit, and is designed to punish the wealthy for having earned that wealth. It also calls for of the banning of all fossil fuels and using only renewables, specifically solar and wind. Although they realize that air travel is essential to our economy (and required to reach some of our states and territories), their plan includes the complete elimination of fossil fuels which means airplanes would be strictly prohibited. Air travel would

go the way of the dinosaur, along with health insurance, Medicare, private industry, and much of what has made America into the exceptional nation we are.

In addition to their contempt for the US, the four have one more thing in common: they were all supported by Justice Democrats

– a radical left-wing PAC that claims to represent the views of the majority of Americans, but insist those goals cannot be obtained solely because of political corruption. (See the Justice Democrat’s platform on page 33.)

The Justice Democrats PAC was founded by (of ) and Kyle Kulinski (progressive activist and host of Secular Talk) along with ten others including (now AOC’s Chief of Staff) and Jack Exley (MoveOn.org fundraiser). The organization says it seeks to “create a left-wing populist movement to support alternative Democratic candidates” beginning with the 2018 mid-term elections. They aim to either defeat the incumbent Democrats or “cause them to become accountable to their constituents.” They require that all candidates they support take a pledge to refuse financial contributions from billionaires and corporations. And, of course, they want to defeat in 2020.

The Justice Democrats supported a total of 79 candidates in the 2018 election cycle, most of which lost the primary. In addition to the four freshmen that make up “The Squad,” three others with similar viewpoints who were endorsed by the Justice Democrats also won their elections and are currently serving in the House of Representatives. Those additional members, while less visible than the Squad, seem to be cut from the same mold as the Squad:

 Raul Grijalva (Arizona’s 3rd), the son of a Mexican migrant worker, first elected in 2003. Grijalva has been rated by multiple organizations as the member of the House furthest to the left (or tied for that distinction). In 2015, Grijalva was accused by a female staffer of drunkenness and creating a "hostile workplace environment." The complaint was settled with a payment to the staffer of $48,000 which was paid by the House of Representatives rather than by Grijalva personally. You may also recall that the former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was shot by Jared Loughner, a paranoid schizophrenic. After the shooting, it was Grijalva who called the shooting a consequence of the “violent rhetoric” used by Tea Party members, and blamed Sarah Palin in particular for "contributing to this toxic climate."

(California’s 17th), first elected in 2017 after one failed prior campaign. Although Khanna claims to identify as a “progressive capitalist,”

he is currently the national co-chair of ’ 2020 presidential campaign and is expected to land a cabinet position if Sanders is elected.

Khanna supports policies that redistribute income from wealthier citizens to the middle class. In addition to debt-free college, Khanna is a supporter

of “Medicare for All” and the Reward Work Act of 2018 which would guarantee employees the right to select 1/3 of the members of the Board of

Directors. He has also called for a financial transaction tax to offset a $1 trillion expansion of the earned income tax credit.

(’s 7th), a civil rights activist from India, who first took office in the House in 2017. She co-chairs the Progressive Caucus

in Congress and is “a rising star in the Democratic Caucus” according to Nancy Pelosi. Following the 9/11/01 terrorist attacks, she founded the pro-

immigrant advocacy group OneAmerica, (initially called Hate Free Zone) and successfully sued the Bush administration to prevent the deportation

of 4,000 Somalians. In June of 2018, Jayapal participated in “Women Disobey” and the sit-in in the Hart Senate Office Building to protest Trump’s “inhumane and cruel” immigration policies, and says she is “proud to have been arrested.”

Justice Democrats and the four women of the Squad want to dismantle the and remake it in accordance with their idea of utopia, where everyone receives all the necessities of life – and more – from the US government. Of course, there’s no mention how they might come to pay for the many trillions of dollars of extra spending per year Couple that with the radical anti-Americanism they regularly display, and, understandably, they would be thought of as more foreign than American. Yet those feelings are based on their words, their behavior, and their disdain for America rather than the fact that they are “women of color.” Criticism based on skin color is unacceptable; however, using skin color as a shield by claiming that any criticism of someone with darker hued skin is automatically racist is equally intolerable.

And while the four refer to Trump using Nazi terminology, and claim ICE and border agents are keepers of concentration camps, they simultaneously complain that they aren’t treated with the respect they deserve. I submit that they are indeed being treated with all the respect they deserve – little to none. They may first need to learn the lesson that respect is not granted; it is earned.
