Spatial Design Principles in Digital Animation
Copyright by Laura Beth Albright 2009 ABSTRACT The visual design phase in computer-animated film production includes all decisions that affect the visual look and emotional tone of the film. Within this domain is a set of choices that must be made by the designer which influence the viewer's perception of the film’s space, defined in this paper as “spatial design.” The concept of spatial design is particularly relevant in digital animation (also known as 3D or CG animation), as its production process relies on a virtual 3D environment during the generative phase but renders 2D images as a final product. Reference for spatial design decisions is found in principles of various visual arts disciplines, and this thesis seeks to organize and apply these principles specifically to digital animation production. This paper establishes a context for this study by first analyzing several short animated films that draw attention to spatial design principles by presenting the film space non-traditionally. A literature search of graphic design and cinematography principles yields a proposed toolbox of spatial design principles. Two short animated films are produced in which the story and style objectives of each film are examined, and a custom subset of tools is selected and applied based on those objectives. Finally, the use of these principles is evaluated within the context of the films produced. The two films produced have opposite stylistic objectives, and thus show two different viewpoints of applying the toolbox. Taken ii together, the two films demonstrate application and analysis of the toolbox principles, approached from opposing sides of the same system. -

Die Invasion der Barbaren Gedanken zur Re-Mythisierung Hollywoods in den 1980er-Jahren Marcus Stiglegger, Berlin 1. Wenn ich zurückdenke an das Jahr 1982 – ich war gerade 11 Jahre alt –, muss ich sagen, dass Conan für kurze Zeit zu meinem Mentor wurde. Ich durfte den Film mit Arnold Schwar- zenegger damals noch nicht sehen und sammelte daher verzweifelt alle Artikel über John Milius’ CONAN THE BARBARIAN (1982), die ich finden konnte. So kaufte ich mein erstes Cinema-Heft und meine erste Bravo-Ausgabe, denn beide berichteten ausführlich über den archaischen Barbaren. Und welche Freude war es, als der Heyne Verlag mit seiner Veröf- fentlichung der Conan-Stories und -Romane begann, die jeweils mit einem Filmfoto auf dem Cover erschienen. Diese blassgelben Buchrücken schmücken noch heute mein Lesezimmer. Conan kam damals zur richtigen Zeit: mit der wachsenden Popularität von J. R. R. Tolkiens Herr der Ringe-Romantrilogie und dem gleichnamigen Animationsfilm von Ralph Bakshi aus dem Jahr 1979, mit John Boormans 1981 gestarteter Neuinterpretation des Arthus-Mythos’ in EXCALIBUR und Terry Gilliams TIME BANDITS (1981). Es folgten THE DRAGON SLAYER (1982) von Matthew Robbins, FIRE AND ICE (1983) von Ralph Bakshi, THE DARK CRYSTAL (1982) von Jim Hanson und Frank Oz, LEGEND (1983) von Ridley Scott und aus Deutsch- land DIE UNENDLICHE GESCHICHTE (1984) von Wolfgang Petersen. Und nicht nur das Kino feierte die Phantasie, auch das Table-Top-Rollenspiel Dungeons & Dragons hatte damals eine Hochphase. Tolkiens Mittelerde hatte sich bereits in der Hippie-Ära der frühen 1970er-Jahre großer Beliebtheit erfreut, Studierendenkreise ebenso inspiriert wie esoterische Beschäfti- gung angestoßen. Pen-and-Paper-Rollenspiele etablierten sich als Gruppenerlebnis, und schon in den 1970er-Jahren musste man von einem Revival jener Fantasy-Literatur sprechen, die eigentlich einer anderen Ära entstammte: den krisengeplagten 1930er-Jahren mit ihren ‚Weird Tales‘ und weiteren frühen Fantasy-Magazinen. -

The Uses of Animation 1 1 The Uses of Animation ANIMATION Animation is the process of making the illusion of motion and change by means of the rapid display of a sequence of static images that minimally differ from each other. The illusion—as in motion pictures in general—is thought to rely on the phi phenomenon. Animators are artists who specialize in the creation of animation. Animation can be recorded with either analogue media, a flip book, motion picture film, video tape,digital media, including formats with animated GIF, Flash animation and digital video. To display animation, a digital camera, computer, or projector are used along with new technologies that are produced. Animation creation methods include the traditional animation creation method and those involving stop motion animation of two and three-dimensional objects, paper cutouts, puppets and clay figures. Images are displayed in a rapid succession, usually 24, 25, 30, or 60 frames per second. THE MOST COMMON USES OF ANIMATION Cartoons The most common use of animation, and perhaps the origin of it, is cartoons. The most important factor about making cartoons on a computer is reusability and flexibility. The system that will actually do the animation needs to be such that all the actions that are going to be performed can be repeated easily, without much fuss from the side of the animator. -

Anabelle Honess Roe thoroughly explores animated documentaries in her book Animated Documentary, arguing that animation is used in these kinds of films to either “substitute” for traditional means to represent the real world (24), such as live action footage, or to “evoke” the psychology, emotional states, and other subjective experiences of an individual (25). Ultimately, Roe argues that animation is a suitable “representational strategy for documentary” filmmaking because of its “visual dialectic of absence and excess” (39). This report applies Roe’s arguments to the analysis of the aesthetics and roles of animation in Waltz with Bashir and Tower. -

Daniel Dumas 02.28.07 | 9:15 AM John Kricfalusi, the mind that gave us The Ren and Stimpy Show, The Ripping Friends and The Goddamn George Liquor Program has a plan to make S you watch the ads you see online. In fact, his goal is to make it so you won't even realize you're watching a commercial. Kricfalusi -- better known as John K. -- isn't exactly known for bending to the will of studios or censors. This is, after all, the guy who was dismissed from Ren and Stimpy after producing an episode that ended with a character being savagely beaten with a boat oar. Now, he's devised a series of Flash- animated advertisements for VOIP provider Raketu. But this isn't the typical case of selling out. Kricfalusi genuinely wants to bring creativity back to advertising while promoting his animation. Plus, he gets to be way naughtier online than on the TV. It all started a few years ago when he produced a series of web shorts for Tower Records -- for free. This led to animation deals with Old Navy and then Raketu. The one-minute shorts hawking the virtues of Raketu feature some of Kricfalusi's most bombastic characters (including the hilarious George Liquor) and are punctuated by Kricfalusi's signature style of bright, entertaining and somewhat retro animation. This form of advertising has been around for decades. Remember when Fred Flintstone peddled Winston cigarettes? But Kricfalusi thinks that his online offering, which carries his distinctive storytelling, will change attitudes toward advertising on the web, kind of like what HBO did for TV. -
