There are good communications with the A37 nearby and fast speed train services from Castle Cary (11 miles south) or Bath Spa (about 11 miles). The airport is about 17 miles away. The village has a church, a well regarded primary school, a gastro pub and an active and friendly community with many local events. Babington House is within about 8 miles. There are excellent state & independent schools in the area including Wells Blue School, Wells Cathedral School, Millfield, Downside and All Hallows plus those in nearby Bruton and Bristol and Bath. The landscape of the area has changed little over the centuries because of strict planning laws and careful stewardship by landowners. This beautiful countryside is very accessible with small quiet lanes and numerous footpaths, which make it very pleasant for walkers and cyclists. There are also numerous sporting, cultural and social activities and organisations available. Woodside is approached via a quiet country lane with gates leading into the brick paved parking area with space for several cars. The front door with an attractive porch leads through to a central hall with the stairs to the first floor. From the hall at the front of the house is a lovely dual aspect sitting room. The room has stunning views of the countryside around as well as double doors out to a terrace. The blue lias fireplace is a special feature of this wonderful room and is fitted with a gas fire. Double doors from the sitting room lead into the dining room which can also be accessed from the hall, the vendors currently use it as a games room however it could easily accommodate a large dining table and make a fabulous entertaining space. As with the sitting room it has fantastic views of the surrounding countryside. The kitchen is large, light and very well fitted with a good range of wooden floor and wall units and a lovely blue 4 door gas AGA and plenty of room for a large kitchen table. There is a window over looking the pretty rear garden, the splash backs are tiled and the floor finished off with good quality wood effect flooring. Off the kitchen is a rear hall with the utility and separate boiler room and back door. The utility, with double windows facing the garden, is fitted with a set of base units, sink and free standing gas cooker. There is plumbing for a washing machine and room for a dryer and fridge freezer. To the far end is a built in airing cupboard. There are two double bedrooms on the ground floor, both benefiting from fitted wardrobes, one of the bedrooms is currently used as a treatment room. The good sized bathroom is fitted with a shower, basin and wc. All the rooms are light and airy and are finished to a high standard. On the first floor are two further double bedroom both with an excellent fitted wardrobes and a large bathroom with bath, basin and wc. There is additional storage accessed from the back of the wardrobes in each of the upstairs bedrooms. The house has natural gas, private water and private drainage. There are solar panels mounted on top of the attached double garage, we are advised that these currently produce approximately £600 to £700 of income per year at a rate of 43.34/kwh and are owned on a 25 year contract with about 19 years left. The garage has electric up and over doors and a door at the rear to the garden. Outside at the front is a terrace which can be accessed from the sitting room, an area of lawn and an ornamental pond. To the rear up a set of paved steps is another level entertaining area consisting of a level lawn and a large terraced area benefitting from the wonderful views. There is also a rockery with dwarf trees, several seating areas all enclosed by stone balustrading. Finally, at the rear is a fenced paddock and vegetable patch with a very useful poly tunnel.     The Barrington Papers The Barrington Papers Delia Barrington’s notes on Binegar’s history 1 The Barrington Papers Introduction to Delia Barrington, 1912-1991 Delia Barrington (née Parker) was born in 1912 in Kensington, London and the family then moved to Ealing where she spent the early years of her life. She was of Huguenot descent through her father's side of the family and a member of the Huguenot Society of London for most of her life. Sometime between 1934 and '37, when she was in her mid-twenties, she enjoyed working, along with a number of other volunteers, for the archaeologist Sir Mortimer Wheeler who was excavating the site of the Iron Age Hill Fort at Maiden Castle in Dorset. This was the start of her interest in archaeology and a development of her interest and involvement in local history: something that was to remain with her throughout her life. She joined the Women's Land Army during the Second World War, working on a farm in Buckinghamshire. The hours were long and the work hard but she found it rewarding and made many friends. In 1941, she met the chauffeur of exiled King Zog of Albania who was living nearby. The story goes that she was courted by him, not with flowers but with kippers, which were left for her by the farm gates! These tactics were obviously successful because at the end of the war she and the chauffeur (William Barrington) were married. In the late 1940s, Delia and William went to Holsworthy in Devon where they ran a farm together but after a few years decided that it was not the life for them and they moved to Bristol where William was employed, once again, as a chauffeur until his retirement.

St. Swithin’s Day, (July 15), a day on which, according to folklore, the weather for a subsequent period is dictated. In popular belief, if it rains on St. Swithin’s Day, it will rain for 40 days, but if it is fair, 40 days of fair weather will follow. St. Swithin was Bishop of Winchester from 852 to 862. At his request he was buried in the churchyard, where rain and the steps of passers by might fall on his grave. According to legend, after his body was moved inside the cathedral on July 15, 971, a great storm ensued. The first textual evidence for the weather prophecy appears to have come from a 13th- or 14th-century entry in a manuscript at Emmanuel College, Cambridge. You can find lots more history about him, but he is perhaps one of the more commonly heard of saints, even if its only the legend about the weather.

Sadly it may be some time yet before this page is full. Not living in the centre of Stoke and being in that 70+ age bracket I have not seen all that has been happening, only heard about the many volunteers and schemes to help that have banded together to give so much needed support in these difficult times. I hope that next month the magazine will be a paper edition, and that our distributors, several of whom are also 70+, will feel able to deliver it to your door. They could not prepare for this event: all they could do was pray and wait.

Traditionally Christians fast during Lent but this year it seems that everyone has had to give up so much already so how do we live Lent in Lockdown. I’ve always liked to try and take something up for Lent, something that is honouring to God and is in some way a sacrifice for me, maybe of time. This year I have had a renewed focus, at least in my head, of how we care for the environment. Many speak of the global climate crisis and I feel that due to the pandemic this has not had the coverage we would expect.
