Drew Newberry, a teen with autism, designed and completed the changes as his Eagle Scout Project. After making his Confirmation last year, Drew approached us, asking if he could recreate our sensory room as he recalled how difficult it was to be attentive during Mass in his younger years. Drew and his 3 siblings who have autism were featured at a Mass at our parish in the Diocesan DVD, Disabilities Awareness: Welcoming our Differences. With autism, the large church space can be overwhelming and every sound is magnified. With autism, people have poor eye contact and difficulty socializing, so interactions with unknown people can cause anxiety. Their brain and bodies are wired differently, so it is hard to make their bodies “sit quietly”. Drew wanted to provide a space where people with autism or special needs would be able to participate in Mass to the best of their ability. Drew solicited donations and used his own money to paint the room and select activities to calm children. The room was unveiled for our Inclusive Easter Mass. We thank Drew for this new room.
