Palm Sunday Holy Thursday Good Friday Vigil Easter Triduum Tri Triduum Holy Week The Triduum– Holy Thursday Lent ends on the evening of Holy Thursday with the celebration of the liturgy called, Holy Thursday, Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper. On the morning of Holy Thursday the Chrism Mass is celebrated by the bishop of each diocese. For pas- toral reasons it may be celebrated on a day prior to Holy Thursday. In the Chrism Mass the bishop, concelebrating Mass with the priests in his diocese, blesses oils and consecrates the oil mixed with chrism. The blessing of the oils is an ancient tradition dating back to Hippolytus and the Apostolic Tradition of the third centu- ry. Two oils are blessed: oil of catechumens and oil of the infirmed; one oil is consecrated: Sacred Chrism. The Triduum– Holy Thursday The Easter Triduum is the “mother of all feasts”. All other feasts of the liturgical year hinge on this great feast. The Triduum, which means, “three days”, is the word designated for the celebration of the Lord’s paschal mystery that spans three days; it is one great liturgy that lasts three days. There is no formal closing to the Holy Thursday or Good Friday liturgies as each is a continuation of the pre- vious one until the liturgy culminates with the Easter Vigil. The Triduum begins with the Mass of the Lord’s Supper, continues with the celebration of the Lord’s Passion on Good Friday, culminates with the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday, and ends on Easter Sunday at sundown. -

EASTER VIGIL RITUAL NOTES A Preliminary Remark: Liturgy is made up of many elements, including community, Word, action, environment, movement, gestures, postures, processions, senses (smell, touch, hearing, sight…) symbols, ministries, music… Think of all these elements when making your preparations. The Easter Vigil – a Journey of Four Stages: The Easter Vigil is made up of four stages: The Service of Light; The Liturgy of the Word; The Liturgy of Baptism and The Liturgy of the Eucharist. In preparing this night’s liturgy the following questions and ideas might be helpful. The Service of Light As an introductory rite, the service of light gathers and readies us as one community to hear the Word of God. It begins by the Easter fire and concludes with the singing of the Exsultet. At what time will the Service of Light begin? It is presumed that the vigil will take place in darkness. The met. office can provide you with the time of sunset and you can plan accordingly. Remember that this is the first celebration of Easter Sunday and should not be anticipated by any other parish mass! Where will the Easter fire be located? Ideally it should be located outside so that priests, ministers and at least some of the community can gather around it. If some of the assembly remain in the church for this part of the liturgy, explore ways how they might hear what is taking place, taking into account the sound system in your particular location. (Given the Irish climate, it is always wise to have a plan B – perhaps a contained fire at the back of the Church. -

The news S accounts have been concerned with the radical changes, the upset of traditional practices, and the technical details of the re stored Holy Week services, but the real issue in the reform is the development of true holiness in the members of Christ's Church. This is the expectation of Pope Pius XII, as expressed personally by him. It is insisted upon repeatedly in the official language of the new laws - the goal is simple: that the faithful may take part in the most sacred week of the year "more easily, more devoutly, and more fruitfully." Certainly the changes now commanded ,by the Apostolic See are extraordinary, particularly since they come after nearly four centuries of little liturgical development. This is especially true of the different times set for the principal services. On Holy Thursday the solemn evening Mass now becomes a clearer and more evident memorial of the Last Supper of the Lord on the night before He suffered. On Good Friday, when Holy Mass is not offered, the liturgical service is placed at three o'clock in the afternoon, or later, since three o'clock is the "ninth hour" of the Gospel accounts of our Lord's Crucifixion. -

CHAPTER 5 Prayer Book Revision and Holy Week As I discussed in the last chapter, by 1929 scholars and clergy of the Episcopal Church had begun to recommend the reintroduction of long-forgotten Holy Week rites and to provide extra-Prayer-Book resources. Liturgical manuals and missals, together with grassroots liturgies devised using the Prayer Book, the hymnal, and the Bible provided resources that parishes could use before of- ficial Holy Week resources became available. These – with the first two edi- tions of The Book of Offices (1940 and 1949), which contained no Holy Week material – were the only authorized resources available with which to devise liturgies. In the previous chapter we reviewed significant unofficial Holy Week material from the first half of the twentieth century. Several other notable re- sources became available toward the middle of the century. This chapter will survey a number of these and then will go on to explore, in some detail, the process of official prayer book revision that got under way in the Episcopal Church beginning around 1950. 1 Unofficial and Grassroots Holy Week Liturgies at Midcentury In 1946, the Rev. Morton C. Stone, assistant priest at Christ Church, Bronxville, New York (and a member of the Standing Liturgical Commission c. 1950 to c. 1955), provided simple, detailed suggestions for Holy Week ‘that any parish can perform … with the help of Bible, Prayer Book, and Hymnal alone’.1 Stone noted that these ceremonies, ‘though not included in our Prayer Book … are often performed in Anglican churches’.2 For Maundy Thursday, Stone pro- posed an agape meal, during which John 13–17 is read and the priest washes the hands of the congregation ‘in imitation of our Lord’s acting as a server’. -

THE GREAT VIGIL OF EASTER LITURGICAL NOTES Because this liturgy is celebrated only once a year, and because it is unlike any other, it requires careful preparation. This will include not only the necessary liturgical items (fire, Paschal candle, candles, water, oil, etc.) but also of services sheets, music and so on. It is recommended that the service sheets for the people be as simple as possible. It might include music, hymnody and the like, when they occur within the liturgy, rather than moving from one book(let) to another. Ministers and servers should rehearse, as should readers and musicians, especially as lighting for the first half of the liturgy will be very different from normal. The book for the presider needs to be prepared well in advance, and it is advisable for it to contain only the liturgical texts needed for this particular celebration. The liturgical colour is white or gold. Order of the Vigil The Great Vigil consists of four parts: the Service of Light; the Ministry of the Word; the Ministry of Baptism, Confirmation, Reception and Renewal, together with renewal of Baptismal promises; and the celebration of the Easter Eucharist. Over the centuries these elements have been arranged in various ways. The order as provided here is the most common, although it is often used with the Ministry of the Word and the Service of Light reversed. To begin with the Ministry of the Word suggests that the readings from the Hebrew (Old) Testament are preparatory to the presence of Christ. To begin with the Service of light suggests that all we do is seen in the light of the presence of the risen Christ. -

“Rachmaninoff's Vespers (All-Night Vigil)”-- Robert Shaw Festival Singers (1990) Added to the National Registry: 2016 Essay by Joseph Swain (guest post)* Robert Shaw Sergei Rachmaninoff “In Robert Shaw I have at last found the maestro I have been looking for,” said Arturo Toscanini, and so nominated the most influential American choral conductor of the latter half of the 20th century. Shaw, who lived from April 30, 1916 to January 25, 1999, first made his mark by founding an interracial chorus called the Collegiate Chorale in 1941, which joined with Toscanini to perform Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony in 1948. That same year, he founded the Robert Shaw Chorale, chosen by the US State Department in 1964 for a good will tour of 15 countries. Best known in recent times is his leadership of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra from 1967 to 1988 and his founding of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus in 1970. Together, the two ensembles made Shaw’s most signal recordings of great works in the choral repertory. Upon his retirement in 1988, Shaw wished to continue to advance choral singing in America, and so founded the Robert Shaw Choral Institute. Although home was in Columbus, Ohio, the Institute sponsored a three-week summer festival in Quercy, France, for experienced American choral singers, teachers, and directors. The competition for admission was severe, not only because the Institute provided all expenses for participants, but because participation meant an intense choral tutorial with Robert Shaw. Great churches in southwestern France provided concert venues, and this recording of the Rachmaninoff “Vespers (All-Night Vigil)” is the fruit of the 1989 festival. -

Liturgical Proclamations _______________________________________________________________ The Roman Missal, Third Edition now holds the Liturgical Proclamations treasured by the Church for use on Christmas, Epiphany, and Easter. They are: The Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ from the Roman Martyrology “may be chanted or recited, most appropriately on December 24, during the celebration of the Liturgy of the Hours. It may also be chanted or recited before the beginning of Christmas Mass during the Night. It may not replace any part of the Mass.” It is found in Appendix I – Various Chants for the Order of Mass. It is the last item in the appendix. It is optional. The Announcement of Easter and the Moveable Feasts is sung; there is no text provided for reciting it. “On the Epiphany of the Lord, after the singing of the Gospel, a Deacon or cantor, in keeping with an ancient practice of Holy Church, announces from the ambo the moveable feasts of the current year….” It is found in Appendix I – Various Chants for the Order of Mass. It is the second last item in the appendix. It is optional. The Easter Proclamation (Exsultet) is sung during the Easter Vigil in the Holy Night of Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of the Lord. It follows the procession into the church and precedes the Liturgy of the Word. It is proclaimed by a Deacon or cantor, with different norms depending on the singer, in either the long or short form. It is found in the Proper of Time, Easter Sunday, nos. 18-19. It is required. The Mass and Its Parts – Navigating the Roman Missal The pastoral effectiveness of a celebration will be greatly increased if the texts of the readings, the prayers, and the liturgical chants correspond as aptly as possible to the needs, the preparation, and the culture of the participants. -

Introduction On Pentecost we celebrate the birth of the Church founded by Jesus the Christ on Peter, the Rock. Pentecost means “50th day” and the celebration was one of the mandatory feast days of the Old Testament for which all Jewish males over the age of 12 were expected to journey to Jerusalem and the Temple. It was on this day, 50 days from the Last Supper, that the Holy Spirit came to the disciples in the Upper Room; having returned there after the Ascension and busying themselves in prayer (the first novena) and choosing the successor of Judas: Matthias. There are four readings to choose from for the first reading of this Mass, all are discussed here. 1st Reading (1) - Genesis 11:1-9 This reading takes place after the great flood. Noah’s sons have gone their separate ways to settle the world: Japheth, the Indo-Europeans; Ham, the Egyptians and Africans; and Shem, the Orientals and Jews. Shem was blessed by Noah in Genesis 9:26 as the firstborn son. It is from Shem that the Jews are descended; the Shemites (Semites). 11:1 The whole world spoke the same language, using the same words. 2 While men were migrating in the east, they came upon a valley in the land of Shinar and settled there. The people are Hamites. Genesis 10:10 tells us that the sons of Ham settled in Shinar. -

LITURGICAL GUIDELINES FOR THE SACRED TRIDUUM 2021 COVID-19 GUIDELINES HOLY THURSDAY For the washing of the feet on Holy Thursday, priests are to be careful to pour water over the foot without touching and to dry the foot with the towel without touching the skin of the person. The priest and those having their feet washed are to wear a mask. A fresh towel must be used for each person. Communion is not to be offered under both kinds. GOOD FRIDAY Either the first or second form of the showing of the Cross may be used. Then, the priest standing in the middle before the altar, is to invite the people in a few words to adore the Holy Cross and afterwards holds the Cross elevated higher for a brief time, for the faithful to adore it in silence. Then, those who would like to come forward may do so as and venerate the Cross with a bow. Before being invited to come forward, all should be reminded to neither touch nor kiss the Cross. The Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments has asked that an intercession for the end of the pandemic be added to the Solemn Intercessions at the Good Friday Liturgy. This text, provided by the USCCB, should be included in the Good Friday intercessions in every parish of the Archdiocese of New Orleans. XI. For an end to the pandemic Let us pray, dearly beloved, for a swift end to the coronavirus pandemic that afflicts our world, that our God and Father will heal the sick, strengthen those who care for them, and help us all to persevere in faith. -

PASTOR’S MEANDERINGS 20 – 21 APRIL 2019 EASTER SUNDAY OF THE RESURRECTION OF THE LORD Dear Members and Friends of St. Stephen, Martyr Parish: Christ is risen! He is truly risen, alleluia. To Him be glory and power for all the ages of eternity, alleluia (Lk. 24:34; Rev. 1:6). Easter is celebrated for fifty glorious days beginning today and culminating on the Solemnity of Pentecost. This is the “mother of all feasts”, the origin of every Mass celebrated because we remember the great love of the Father for us, whose Son, Jesus Christ, by dying destroyed death and by rising restored all of us to life. This is the feast of the Passover of the Lord; the new day; the new creation; the new life; the eighth day. Easter reminds us that we have been reconciled with God the Father. This is the truth of Easter. Our Lord Jesus Christ who died on the Cross has risen and is now alive. He rose from the dead and opened for us eternal life with God. In the Gospel, the message of the Angel to the women who went to see the tomb is encouraging: “Do not be afraid; I know that you are looking for Jesus who was crucified. He is not here; for He has been raised, as He said. Come, see the place where He lay. Then go quickly and tell His disciples. ‘He has been raised from the dead, and indeed He is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see Him.’” (Mt. 28:5-7) Like Mary Magdalene and the other Mary, this good news should be a cause of great joy for us! This is the truth that we celebrate today and at every liturgy.
