Watching Shakespeare‟s plays in theatre for the yester year English educated Indians has been a hobby. This infatuation with the greatest dramatist has led some Film directors to experiment on the themes of comedies and tragedies. In recent years, director Vishal Bhardwaj holds the credit of adapting themes of his great tragedies to contemporary situation and work wonder through his experimentation. Maqbool is a 2003 Indian crime drama, an adaptation of the play Macbeth. The film had its North American premiere at the 2003 Toronto International Film Festival and was screened in the Marché du Film section of the 2004 Cannes Film Festival. Bhardwaj then moved on to adapt Othello in his 2006 film Omkara which won him commercial as well as critical success and Francis Ford Coppola's attention. Haider is the third installment of Bhardwaj's Shakespearean trilogy. The film is a modern-day adaptation of William Shakespeare's tragedy Hamlet, set amidst the insurgency-hit Kashmir during conflicts of 1995 and civilian disappearances. ABSTRACT This thesis examines two films – Slumdog Millionaire (Boyle, 2008) and Dostana (Mansukhani, 2008) to explore the circulation of national identities within these films and the circulation of the films themselves within larger discourses of the nation, particularly India. This thesis argues that our current cultural moment require changing understandings of the idea of ‘film’, to include its multiple networks of capital and affect, and a changing understanding of ‘nation’ as materially illustrated in these films. The aim of this thesis is to conceive of a way to understand films as a collection of temporalities, and to map the duration of these temporalities as they reveal the emerging networks of circulation that change the ontology of both film and nation. I also argue that the ‘nation’ is an affective construct, and that ‘nationness’ is the ‘trace’ or ‘residue’ that these films bear. This argument also marks a specific approach to the idea of a ‘nation’ itself that includes more than the boundaries of the state, or the ethnicity of the people, but begins to address the way objects possess certain national traces, particularly within cultural objects such as the arts.

Hindi ‘horror’ films have been operating mostly in the “B” grade halls, offering a sleazy kind of entertainment to a lower class audience. Such films have suffered from all sorts of problems arising out of working in the underbelly of the industry. These used to be typically low budget films. But recently, one can observe a change in the production of horror films. Films dealing with supernatural subjects have been catching up with their romantic or other generic counterparts. But what is more interesting about this phenomenon is the use of sound in them. There is much debate whether Indian films can be classified into genres, but definitely there are instances where a certain group of films can be clubbed together according to thematic preoccupations. The Indian horror film, in that sense, can constitute a generic object for us.
