If Leavis's commitment to romantic individualism, inseparable from his tireless endeavour to ensure the continuity of resistance to the essentially totalitarian, depersonalising values of the technological-Benthamite civilisation and particularly to the growing menace of the American ethos, was a sheer mystification, concealing, as his post- modern critics now claim, his secret collusion with the Establishment, how is one to describe their own literary and cultural theory? What is one to make of the literary and cultural criticism which denies the individual any power to intervene in historical processes, which demonstrates relentlessly the ways culture entraps and expropriates the self, translating the individual into a subject, but marginalises equally tirelessly, almost perversely, the kind of literature whose theme was the reverse process - that of the transformation of the subject back into the individual - and yet declares its purpose to be social and political liberation? Perhaps, instead of defending the humanist critic from too many, often contradictory objections, one should begin to demystify his demystifiers: perhaps, rather than take them at their word, one should begin to ask what or whom they serve behind their confident democratic and revolutionary postures? Among the subjects of his books and essays are philosophies of history, science, and aesthetics.2 A close look at these writ- ings exposes a different Oakeshott, not a conservative defender of the impor- tance of practice and tradition but a radical thinker familiar with the trends of his own time and deeply influenced by them. Among those philosophies aesthetics is perhaps the most obscure one. In- deed, the significance of aesthetics for Oakeshott is readily recognized by com- mentators. His thought is often portrayed as having a strong aesthetic dimen- sion. Thus, the influence of the Renaissance and Romanticism on his worldview is emphasized, he is sometimes compared with European existentialists, and one commentator even described his life as “poetic, not prosaic.”3 But, there I would like to thank Raymond Geuss, Derek Matravers, and David Runciman for their suggestions. -

FACTA UNIVERSITATIS Series: Linguistics and Literature Vol. 3, No 1, 2004, pp. 87 - 96 REMEMBERING AND DISMEMBERING: DERRIDA'S READING OF LEVI-STRAUSS UDC 82.09+[82:001.8] Lena Petrović Faculty of Philosophy, Niš, Serbia and Montenegro Abstract. The excitement about poststructural theories has subsided, yet a proper critical assessment of their significance is still lacking. In order to question the revolutionary potential still attributed to deconstruction, I propose a close reading of Derrida's deconstruction of Levi-Strauss in his 'Structure, Sign and Play in the History of Human Sciences'. My purpose is to draw attention to the ways in which Derrida, the champion of difference, ends up by re-affirming a thoroughly repressive logic of the same, a gesture which, in my opinion, makes Derrida guilty of the Eurocentrism of which he accuses Levi-Strauss. I will argue further that his radical suspicion and injunction against reminiscence are comparable to a forced conversion recorded in the myth of Orpheus. The dismemberment of Orpheus may be understood as an outward projection of the violent interruption of his mourning for the past, of the inner fragmentation resulting from forgetting, and Derrida's recommendation of free-play, like all other poststructuralist endeavors to 'de-originate' the individual, are the latest version of this ancient cultural crime. Now that the poststructuralist and postmodern literary and cultural theory, or Grand Theory, is slowly receding into the past, it is, I believe, important not to allow it a quiet exit: instead of treating it as a passing intellectual fashion, or even an interesting aberra- tion, one should recognize it for what it really was. -

He is the author of more than dozen books and some 200 articles related with Western literature, criticism, and postmodernism. Hassan is counted among the first to launch into the study of postmodernism, and, therefore, sometimes called the ‘father of postmodernism.’ (1) The two-column table of modernism and postmodernism Hassan compiled has been regarded as a standard gauge of the differences between them, and ‘immanence’ and ‘indeterminacy’ expounded in it as twin traits of postmodernism.(2) Hassan is a practitioner as well as theorist of postmodernism in that his works, highly academic, are tinged with postmodern traits: playful, fragmentary, self-reflexive. -

I had heard of her before but never read anything by her. I found her to appeal to something within me. I had just finished a book of poems by Robert Frost but found I wasn't as smitten with him as I used to be so I went looking for other poets. -
