The UAE, while largely a desert country with a hyper-arid climate, also has a range of more mesic habitats such as islands, mountains, and wadis. As such it has a diverse native herpetofauna of at least 72 species as follows: two amphibian species (Bufonidae), five marine turtle species (Cheloniidae [four] and Dermochelyidae [one]), 42 lizard species (Agamidae [six], Gekkonidae [19], Lacertidae [10], Scincidae [six], and Varanidae [one]), a single amphisbaenian, and 22 snake species (Leptotyphlopidae [one], Boidae [one], Colubridae [seven], Hydrophiidae [nine], and Viperidae [four]). Additionally, we recorded at least eight alien species, although only the Brahminy Blind Snake (Ramphotyplops braminus) appears to have become naturalized. We also list legislation and international conventions pertinent to the herpetofauna. Crotaline and elapid snakebites are reported all over the world as well as in the Middle East and other countries around this region. However, data regarding snakebites and their treatment in Qatar are limited. &is review paper is going to investigate the presentation and treatment of snakebite in Qatar. A good assessment helps to decide on the management of the snakebites envenomation. Antivenom and conservative management are the mainstays of treatment for crotaline snakebite. Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) has been suggested to do early diagnosis and treatment of soft tissue problems, such as edema and compartment syndrome, after a snakebite. &e supporting data are not sufficient regarding the efficiency of POCUS in diagnosing the extent and severity of tissue involvement and its ultimate effect on the outcome. -

The chapter is focused on a diversity of Mediterranean amphibians and reptiles, discussing major threats to the species and its conservation status. There are 117 amphibians, of which 80 (68%) are endemic and 398 reptiles, of which 216 (54%) are endemic distributed throughout the Basin. While the species diversity increases in the north and west for amphibians, the reptile diversity increases from north to south and from west to east direction. Amphibians are almost twice as threatened (29%) as reptiles (14%). Habitat loss and degradation, pollution, invasive/alien species, unsustainable use, and persecution are major threats to the species. The important conservation actions should be directed to sustainable management measures and legal protection of endangered species and their habitats, all for the future of Mediterranean biodiversity. Shawkey 1 1234567890():,; The thermal environment can affect the evolution of morpho-behavioral adaptations of ectotherms. Heat is transferred from substrates to organisms by conduction and reflected radiation. Because brightness influences the degree of heat absorption, substrates could affect the evolution of integumentary optical properties. Here, we show that vipers (Squa- mata:Viperidae) inhabiting hot, highly radiative and superficially conductive substrates have evolved bright ventra for efficient heat transfer. We analyzed the brightness of 4161 publicly available images from 126 species, and we found that substrate type, alongside latitude and body mass, strongly influences ventral brightness. Substrate type also significantly affects dorsal brightness, but this is associated with different selective forces: activity-pattern and altitude. Ancestral estimation analysis suggests that the ancestral ventral condition was likely moderately bright and, following divergence events, some species convergently increased their brightness. Vipers diversified during the Miocene and the enhancement of ventral brightness may have facilitated the exploitation of arid grounds. The horned viper Cerastes cerastes (Linnaeus, 1758) is famous for a pair of 'horns' (really spine-like scales) above the eyes. Actually, some individuals lack these horns, regardless of sex (Anderson, 1898: 331, 334; Gasperetti, 1988: 339). The species ranges across the sand deserts of northern Africa and southwestern Asia; on both continents, the frequency of occurrence of the horns in the population varies among localities, even at small distances. Populations may be predominantly horned, entirely hornless, or mixed (Schnurrenberger, 1959; Gasperetti, 1988; personal observations). Both Stemmler (1967) and Petzold (1975: 454) made a secondary reference to mixed litters, or possibly the same mixed litter, of horned and hornless C. cerastes. However, Y. L. Werner (personal communication) did not succeed, despite his efforts, in finding the original evidence on which these reports had been based. Gasperetti (1988: 339) commented on C. c. gasperettii, "It is speculative that from the same litter may be individuals either with or without horns." The purpose of this note is to report on such a mixed litter. An adult hornless female C. c. cerastes was received on 4 June 1988 from the Faiyum sands (Lower Egypt west of the Nile) in gravid condition and housed on the author's reptile facility at Petah Tiqwa, Israel. On 14 July 1988 she oviposited seven eggs. These were incubated at a temperature fluctuating between approximately 24 °C at night and 28°C at midday and at a relative humidity approximating 70%. -

Based on this data, supplemented with additional museum specimens (23 selected specimens belonging to 10 species) and reliable literature reports, we present an annotated checklist of the 51 snake species known from Niger. Psammophis sudanensis is added to the snake fauna of Niger. Known localities for all species are presented and, where necessary, taxonomic and biogeographic issues discussed. Key words. Main, Germany; * corresponding author Abstract. A distinctive new species of the viperid genus Cerastes is described form Tunisia. It is closely related to Cerastes vipera but easily distinguishable from this invariably hornless species by having tufts of erected supraocular scales form- ing little crowns above the eyes. These crown-like tufts consist of several vertically erect, blunt scales which differ dras- tically from the supraocular horns of C. cerastes or C. gasperettii that consist of one long, pointed scale only. Although the new species is based on only one single specimen, further specimens had originally been available but were subse- quently lost in private terraria. The taxonomic status of the nomen “Cerastes cerastes karlhartli” is discussed and the name is found to be unavailable (nomen nudum). Also the authorship of “Cerastes cornutus” is discussed and ascribed to Boulenger. Key words. The region of Jazan in being in the South-Western part of Saudi Arabia between longitudes 420 and 43.80 and latitudes 5, 16o and 17o, and is bounded on the south and east of the Republic of Yemen, Asir area in the north and the Red Sea in the west. The results showed that there are four families of poisonous snakes "Proteroglyphous" living in Jazan region. They are: Family Atractaspididae, Elapidae, Viperidae and Hydrophiidae . This work aimed to unveil ecological problems and throw light on diversity of poisonous snakes in Jazan region and the danger of these species to human life. Despite the fact that these snakes may be harmful to human life in some cases, it may also be useful to him in many aspects of life. Since there are no enough studies on the animal species in the region, this study came to identify the diversity of this animal group. There is no doubt that the study of these species and identifying them will provide some solutions that could make this group as an endless source of biodiversity and at the same time, this study provides information on the feasibility of protection of this species in this region.
