This document serves as a data dictionary for the existing vegetation, historical vegetation, and potential natural vegetation databases, as described below: • Interpretation of aerial photography acquired in 1995, 1996, and 1997 was used to characterize existing (current) conditions. The 1996 and 1997 photography was obtained after cessation of the Bull and Summit wildfires in order to characterize post-fire conditions. The database name is: 97veg. • Interpretation of late-1930s and early-1940s photography was used to characterize historical conditions. The database name is: 39veg. • The potential natural vegetation was determined for each polygon in the analysis -

Box 221,Reading, Berkshire, RG6 2AS ABSTRACT Morphological descriptions are given of the 14 speciesof Orobanche (Orobanchaceae) recorded in the British Isles, together with separate keys for identifying fresh material and herbarium specimens. Accounts of the history of the speciesare presented together with illustrations and distribution maps. The variation in Orobanche minor is accounted for with the recognition of four varieties. INTRODUcnON ..,,; . The genus Orobanche is renowned as a taxonomically very difficult one. In most casesthis is a result of many of the useful charactersbecoming lost on drying, and the lack of adequate field notes. Plants which are very distinct in the field become reduced to a hideous brown uniformity when pressed. Therefore, herbarium specimens are often incorrectly determined (an average of 5-10% in fact). The loss of characters on drying, considerable intra-specific variation, confusing synonymies, incorrectly cited names and badly described specieswith poor types (often with different specieson the same sheet) have done little to generate interest in the genus. Too many botanists have shown a reluctance to deal with this genusin herbaria, perpetuating the myth that the speciesare impossible to identify once dried. Certainly, Orobanche minor Sm. and its close relatives often cannot be positively determined without descriptive notes made at the time of gathering, but all other species from the British Isles are distinct enough not to need any additional information. It is hoped that this account will stimulate other botanists to study, identify and record members of this fascinating parasitic genus in Britain and Ireland, as well as clear up some errors and confusions made in the past. -

Currently, it limits sunflower oil production in Southern and Eastern Europe and in some areas of Asia, causing around 50% seed losses when susceptible hybrids are grown. Covered in this review are aspects such as: biological processes that are common to Orobanche spp. and/or particular to O. cumana in sunflower, genetic resistance and its mechanisms, races of the parasite identified in different countries throughout the time and their increasing virulence, and breeding for resistance to some herbicides as a novel control op- tion. The main purpose is to present an updated and, as far as possible, complete picture of the way both the parasitic weed and its host crop have evolved in time, and how they co-exist in the current agriculture. -

Abstract Administered by the USDA Forest Service, the Kiowa and Rita Blanca National Grasslands occupy 230,000 acres of public land extending from northeastern New Mexico into the panhandles of Oklahoma and Texas. A mosaic of topographic features including canyons, plateaus, rolling grasslands and outcrops supports a diverse flora. Eight hundred twenty six (826) species of vascular plant species representing 81 plant families are known to occur on or near these public lands. This report includes a history of the area; ethnobotanical information; an introductory overview of the area including its climate, geology, vegetation, habitats, fauna, and ecological history; and a plant survey and information about the rare, poisonous, and exotic species from the area. A vascular plant checklist of 816 vascular plant taxa in the appendix includes scientific and common names, habitat types, and general distribution data for each species. This list is based on extensive plant collections and available herbarium collections. Authors Donald L. Orobanche fasciculata Nutt., CLUSTERED BROOMRAPE. Perennial herb, nonphotosynthetic root parasite (holophyte lacking chlorophyll), fleshy, branched belowground, with 1−several subterranean stems, erect, in range 8–20 cm tall; shoots densely glandular- pilose, the hairs colorless with yellowish amber heads. Stems: cylindric, < 5 mm diameter, fleshy, brownish on subterranean portion, reddish on aerial portion. Leaves: absent. Inflorescence: raceme, appearing scapose, 5−15+-flowered, flowers helically alternate, bracteate; bractlet subtending pedicel, simple, sessile, achlorophyllous, appressed, scalelike, 1.5–12 mm long, partially sheathing rachis, typically purplish, entire or with several short teeth on margins, conspicuously glandular-hairy; pedicel erect, cylindric, in range to 120 mm long, to 1.8 mm basal diameter, reddish to flesh-colored, glandular-hairy, without bracteoles, hollow. Flower: bisexual, bilateral, 12–17 mm across; receptacle conic, ± 2 mm long; calyx 5-lobed, slightly bilateral with lower 2 lobes slightly longer and with a deeper sinus between them, in range 8−10 mm long, glandular- hairy; tube cup-shaped, 2.5–5 × 4.5–5.5 mm, yellowish or flesh-colored; lobes long- tapered awl-shaped, 4.8–6.5 mm long, in range typically > tube, purple, at anthesis with tips generally spreading, venation obscure; corolla 2-lipped, to 34 mm long; tube + throat 18–30 × ± 5 mm but narrower above ovary, light yellow with rose reddish to purplish or dark yellow veins, slightly arched outward, slightly compressed side-to-side most of length -
