The AGA Song Book up to Date
3rd Edition Songs, Poems, Stories and More! Edited by Bob Felice Published by The American Go Association P.O. Box 397, Old Chelsea Station New York, N.Y., 10113-0397 Copyright 1998, 2002, 2006 in the U.S.A. by the American Go Association, except where noted. Cover illustration by Jim Rodgers. No part of this book may be used or reproduced in any form or by any means, or stored in a database or retrieval system, without prior written permission of the copyright holder, except for brief quotations used as part of a critical review. Introductions Introduction to the 1st Edition When I attended my first Go Congress three years ago I was astounded by the sheer number of silly Go songs everyone knew. At the next Congress, I wondered if all these musical treasures had ever been printed. Some research revealed that the late Bob High had put together three collections of Go songs, but the last of these appeared in 1990. Very few people had these song books, and some, like me, weren’t even aware that they existed. While new songs had been printed in the American Go Journal, there was clearly a need for a new collection of Go songs. Last year I decided to do whatever I could to bring the AGA Song Book up to date. I wanted to collect as many of the old songs as I could find, as well as the new songs that had been written since Bob High’s last song book. You are holding in your hands the book I was looking for two years ago. -

I cannot believe it. My red-pigtailed childhood alter-ego who lived in that crazy house with her horse and monkey unfettered by supervision failed to make the final cut. Exhibition curator Chris Loker shared the clash of “Mary versus Pippi” to illustrate the difficult deci- sionmaking required to arrive at the Grolier Club’s “One Hundred Books Famous in Children’s Literature,” on view through February 7 at the head- quarters of America’s oldest bibliophile society, founded in 1884. The formulation of the joint catalog and exhibition was not an exercise in nos- talgia, even as Loker recognizes, and even honors, the powerful emotional pull children’s books can exert upon memory. Her intent was to produce a scholarly tool for serious book collectors while also crafting a catalog and exhibition that would delight the general reading public as well as hard-core bibliophiles. According to Loker, “Through this project we have tried to find as many ways as possible to embrace children’s literature.” More than a century before the British Museum and BBC created the often-emulated History of the World in One Hundred Objects radio and online program, New York’s Grolier Club had launched its own “One Hundred” series. The club’s first such exhibition and catalog, One Hundred Books Famous in English Literature, dates to 1902–03. -

An Evening with David Sedaris
MEDIA RELEASE Monday 10 August SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE presents AN EVENING WITH DAVID SEDARIS “Sedaris’s droll assessment of the mundane and the eccentrics who inhabit the world’s crevices make him one of the greatest humorists writing today.” – Chicago Tribune “Sedaris ain’t the preeminent humorist of his generation by accident.” – Entertainment Weekly “He’s smart, he’s caustic, he’s mordant, and, somehow, he’s…well, nice.” – Toronto Globe and Mail NPR humourist and bestselling author David Sedaris returns to the Sydney Opera House in January 2016 as part of a much anticipated third tour down under. An Evening with David Sedaris sees audiences treated to Sedaris reading from a selection of his new and unpublished essays and diary entries, which he writes in daily. Having been nominated for three Grammy Awards for Best Spoken Word and Best Comedy Album, an evening with Sedaris is always a special and memorable event. It’s thanks to his trademark sardonic wit and incisive social critiques that Sedaris has become one of America’s preeminent humour writers. The great skill with which he slices through cultural euphemisms and political correctness has earned him a reputation as a master of satire and one of the most observant writers addressing the human condition today. Fans of Sedaris will know him as the author of multiple best-selling books including Naked, Me Talk Pretty One Day, Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim, When You Are Engulfed in Flames and his most recent book, Let’s Explore Diabetes With Owls. A total of 10 million copies of his books are in print and have been translated into 25 languages. -

David Sedaris: Me Talk Pretty One Day ME TALK PRETTY ONE DAY
david sedaris: Me talk pretty one day ME TALK PRETTY ONE DAY ANYONE WHO WATCHES EVEN THE SLIGHTEST amount of TV is familiar with the scene: An agent knocks on the door of some seemingly ordinary home or office. The door opens, and the person holding the knob is asked to identify himself. The agent then says, "I'm going to ask you to come with me." They're always remarkably calm, these agents. If asked "Why do I need to go anywhere with you?" they'll straighten their shirt cuffs or idly brush stray hairs from the sleeves of their sport coats and say, "Oh, I think we both know why." The suspect then chooses between doing things the hard way and doing things the easy way, and the scene ends with either gunfire or the gentlemanly application of handcuffs. Occasionally it's a case of mistaken identity, but most often the suspect knows exactly why he's being taken. It seems he's been expecting this to happen. The anticipation has ruled his life, and now, finally, the wait is over. You're sometimes led to believe that this person is actually relieved, but I've never bought it. Though it probably has its moments, the average day spent in hiding is bound to beat the average day spent in prison. When it comes time to decide who gets the bottom bunk, I think anyone would agree that there's a lot to be said for doing things the hard way. The agent came for me during a geography lesson.
