To use another overblown metaphor, clubs are also the essential fabric out of which the rich, variegated tapestry of the game’s history has been woven.

  • Promoting Women and Girls in Sport Partnership Agreement Outcomes
Promoting Women and Girls In Sport Darebin Women’s Sports Club Inc. known as Darebin Falcons 2018-2020 Funding Partnership with Darebin Council – Status Report REPORT DATE PREPARED BY COUNCIL STAFF LIAISON Date 27 November 2019 Club Contact/s Adam Feiner, Felicity Leahy PARTNERSHIP INITIATIVES - SUMMARY Darebin Falcons have had another strong year, growing in playing membership (now at over 750 girls and women), accruing a number of achievements and continuing to empower girls and women on and off the field. Our Club membership and the quality of our core programs are our reason for being and gives us the authenticity to have voice across the range of female sports participation and leadership programs. It is really important that we remain a leader and innovator on field to enable us to continue our broader advocacy for gender equity both on and off the field. Key achievements in 2019 included expansion of the Auskick and Mini Roos programs; introducing two new soccer teams and an inaugural AFL Masters team; increasing cricket from 1 to 2 junior teams; and Falcon, Lauren Pearce, winning the VFLW Best and Fairest award (see link at end to News story). We increased participation options beyond the playing group through such initiatives as the soccer mums program; Falcons Academy school holidays programs and the community come and try day. Off field, our inclusion and advocacy activities included Pride matches in both cricket and footy, a NAIDOC celebration round, participation in a number of Council events and advocacy with our leagues for gender equity in sport. With the introduction of our Masters team, we proudly now provide a full Australian Rules pathway for girls and women from Auskick to Masters.

  • Her Game -Synopsis Sheet.Pdf
Her Game is a series of short stories exploring the experiences of people who have traditionally been excluded from playing Australian football. Through the eyes of players, coaches, presidents, reporters and supporters; it explores how some people experience their gender within AFL culture and how that affects Australia’s national identity. This series was produced for the Community Radio Network and is made possible by the Community Broadcasting Foundation. Her Game was produced by Bethany Atkinson-Quinton at Triple R. #1 Leah Avene Age: 30 Position: Megahertz Player in the Community Cup (VIC) “The principal of the girls school found out that I was playing football, and he published a picture of me in my Megahertz top telling the whole school that I was playing football and he thought that it was really important that, especially the girls at the school knew, that that was something, that someone, a female that they knew really well, was doing, because you need those visible people, you need those examples, so kids know what’s available to them and if they don’t see it, they can’t aspire to be like that, as far as I know, I’m the only mum at school that played football.” #2 Tayla Harris Age: 18 Position: Melbourne Football Club player (VIC), Zilmare Eagles football player (QLD) “Me and Daisy were the first female footballers to go to the Brownlow as footballers so that was good and I thought it was quite important to get it right….It’s hard to watch the guys get drafted and start their lives and have training all day and then go to

  • AFL Vic Record Week 4.Indd
VFL Round 1 14 - 17 April 2017 $3.00 Photo: Cameron Grimes New VFL season begins Welcome to season 2017 in the Peter Jackson VFL. Plenty has happened since last September when Footscray was crowned premier. We have seen 13 VFL players provided with an AFL opportunity, selected in the 2016 NAB AFL national and rookie draft s. Casey and Geelong both produced three draft ees, with Coburg, Footscray and North Ballarat providing two draft ees each. The pleasing aspect has been seeing the likes of Tom Stewart, Mitch Hannan, Robbie Fox and Tim Smith debut in the early rounds of the AFL season. The competition this year will feature 14 clubs, with Frankston not provided a VFL licence for the 2017 season. The club has had a rich history of providing a pathway and opportunities for footballers in the region – none more evident than the debut for Sydney in recent weeks of 2014 Fothergill-Round Medal winner Nic Newman. However, it was decided at the end of last year that without the necessary off -field structures in place, AFL Victoria was not confident financial projections provided by the club could be met. We have a strong willingness to ensure there is a VFL presence in the region into the future, but it must be viable and sustainable both on and off the field in the long term. This has been highlighted in the regular communication AFL Victoria has had with the new board at the club. In other pre-season news, at the VFL Season Launch last week we revealed there will be a triple-header of matches for the 2017 Victorian state league Grand Final day at Etihad Stadium on Sunday September 24.
