It I’m a baseball fan, and the other night something spec- may be that Armando Galarraga didn’t sleep well last tacular happened. The Detroit Tigers were playing the night; it may be that this morning he is pretty upset. But Cleveland Indians. As you are merciful, God, you call us to be mercy. We seek to learn that difficult and life-long task: to give you our whole selves. We find ourselves easily wrapped up in our own agendas, keeping tabs on the offenses of others, looking to see others slip up and to laugh at their misfortune, but this is not your way. This is no holy sacrifice. Because you were merciful to us, you call us to be mercy to the world. Griffioen In 2010, pitcher Armando Galarraga was denied a perfect game when umpire Jim Joyce called Jason Donald safe at first with two outs in the bottom of the 9th. In the numerous media discussions that followed, Joyce’s ‘blown’ call was commonly referred to as ‘mistaken’, ‘wrong’, or otherwise erroneous. However, this use of lan- guage makes some not uncontroversial ontological assumptions. It claims that the fact that a runner is safe or out has nothing to do with the ruling of the umpire himself, but rather with some state of the universe that does not depend on the umpire for its existence (e.g. the runner’s reaching the base before the ball or not). In this paper, I recast the problem as a version of Plato’s Euthyphro Dilemma and argue that the view implied by the above assertions is actually misguided. Instead, I hope to show that an alternative view – what I call ‘restricted umpire voluntarism’ – is actually more in line with the spirit of the game of baseball and is not as coun- terintuitive as it may appear at first glance. Armando and Detroit manager Jim Leyland are to be commended for their handling of a very difficult situation. I also applaud the courage of umpire Jim Joyce to address this unfortunate situation honestly and directly. Jim's candor illustrates why he has earned the respect of on-field personnel throughout his accomplished career in the Major Leagues since 1989. "As Jim Joyce said in his postgame comments, there is no dispute that last night's game should have ended differently. While the human element has always been an integral part of baseball, it is vital that mistakes on the field be addressed. Given last night's call and other recent events, I will examine our umpiring system, the expanded use of instant replay and all other related features.
