I guess most of you would like ice cream. Yet, do you know the history of ice cream? There are lots of myths about where ice-cream was invented. Some have suggested that ice cream was invented in Europe while others said that it was invented in China. Actually, up till now, an exact answer has not yet been found. However, the most common theory is that ice-cream was first made in the 4th century B.C. The Roman emperor Nero ordered his servants to keep ice from the mountains and combine it with fruit toppings, nectar and honey. This marked the start of the history of ice cream. During the Shang Dynasty in China, King Tang had a method of creating ice and milk concoctions. Then 'ice cream' gradually developed from ice to a mixture of rice and milk. However, the ice cream at that time was still not like what we eat now. The most revolutionary development in ice cream occurred when Marco Polo, the 13th century adventurer, visited China and brought the recipe for 'ice cream' back to Italy and France. In the 16th century in France, ice cream developed greatly, and was quite similar to the ice cream we eat nowadays, with different flavours like lemon and strawberry. You might ask: why is ice cream called ‘ice cream’? The first ice cream shop in America opened in New York City in 1776. American colonists were the first to use the term ‘ice cream’. The name came from the phrase ‘iced cream’, which was similar to “iced tea”. The name was later abbreviated to ‘ice cream’, the name we know today. In the 19th and the early 20th century, more kinds of ice cream were invented; for example, the Sundae was invented in the 1890s, while the sweet cone was invented in the 1900s. These days, ice cream has become more diversified and it has improved a lot, including the taste, texture and appearance. We can better enjoy the happiness brought by ice cream. We can also see that ice cream production has become more and more creative. Have you ever tried or heard of the following types of ice cream before? 1. Mini-melts The origin of Mini-melts can be traced back to Japan. Mini-melts, a cup of mini ice-cream balls with two or more flavours, have become popular in Hong Kong due to their interesting appearance. Their smooth and creamy Source: http://bigreddog.com.au texture has also attracted a lot of fans in different countries. The Mini-melts Company now has shops or vending machines in over 20 countries! In Hong Kong, mini-melts sell for $15 per cup, and they are usually sold in vending machines which can be found in Kowloon City. 2. Dondurma Dondurma is a popular ice cream in Turkey. The term 'Dondurma' means ‘freezing’ in Turkish. Dondurma is made up of milk, sugar, salep ( a kind of flour) and mastic (a natural gum produced from ground wild mountain orchids). Unlike other types of ice cream, Dondurma has a tough and sticky texture and does not melt easily. In Turkey, Dondurma is usually sold from carts on the street. The mixture is churned regularly with long-handled paddles. Vendors often collect the dondurma on a stick and rotate it around before finally giving it to the customers. Sometimes, Dondurma is served with warm liquid, since some Turks believe that cold food will cause illnesses. It is eaten with forks and knives. 10 Source: http://www.chinadaily.com.cn 3. Writing Celebrity: Modernism, Authorial Personas, and Self-Promotion in the Early Twentieth Century United States Timothy W. Galow A dissertation submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of English and Comparative Literature. Chapel Hill 2008 Approved by: Linda Wagner-Martin (Director) Erin Carlston (Chair) María DeGuzmán John McGowan Janice Radway ABSTRACT Timothy W. Galow: Writing Celebrity: Modernism, Authorial Personas, and Self- Promotion in the Early Twentieth Century United States (Under the direction of Linda Wagner-Martin, Erin Carlston, John McGowan, Maria Deguzmán, and Janice Radway) “Writing Celebrity” argues that the rise of a national celebrity culture at the turn of the twentieth century transformed cultural production in the United States. While most literary studies of this period focus on the relationship between elite authors and the mass market, I assert that the influence of personality marketing transcended traditional aesthetic categories and reshaped the profession of authorship for both “highbrow” and “lowbrow” writers. Against this backdrop, my work traces the impact that an emergent celebrity culture had on the careers of Gertrude Stein and F. Scott Fitzgerald. Drawing on archival documents, literary texts, and various extant publicity materials, I examine how both of these authors attempted to market distinctive personas and the various ways in which readers and critics responded to their public identities. Gertrude Stein, immediately following the runaway success of The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas , theorized an authorial identity that exists only in the very instant of creation and instills texts with permanent value.

  • In 1998, Pop Music Was Poised to Make One of Its Greatest Comebacks in History
In 1998, pop music was poised to make one of its greatest comebacks in history. Following several years, of brooding, self-absorbed radio fare, top 40 listeners were aching to see the sun* and have a little fun with the car windows down. *NSYNC introduced itself to the U.S. with the anthemic, high-energy “I Want You Back.” In March, it lit the airwaves like fireworks, washing away FM’s dark veneer and offering a proper introduction to the consummate millennium-era hitmaking ensemble. Of course, at the time, no one knew that these five show biz kids were destined to break records left and right. Over the course of five years, *NSYNC—Justin Randall Timberlake (Justin), Joseph Anthony Fatone Jr. (Joey), Joshua Scott Chasez (JC), James Lance Bass (Lance) and Christopher Alan Kirkpatrick (Chris)—would sell nearly 30 million records in the U.S. and 42 million worldwide. The group charted with a dozen singles, conquering top 40, AC, dance, Latin, country and R&B. Theft gargantuan worldwide “No Strings Attached” and “PopGdyssey” stadium tours rewrote sales, artistic and technical standards for road shows (when tickets for the first 52 “Strings” dates went on sale, one million sold on day one, a record). Later, the stripped down “Celebrity” tour zeroed in on *NSYNC’s musical prowess. These guys even refined the definition of a boy band, working with “grown-up” acts like Gloria Estefan, Celine Dion, Phil Collins and Richard Marx. Their:story began modestly enough in the mid-1990s. Timberlake and Chasez knew eaeh other as Mouseketeer graduates of the Disney Channel's “The Mickey Mouse Club.” As the two were recording respective demos in Nashville in search of a recording contract, Timberlake received a call from Kirkpatrick, whom he'd met on the audition circuit around Orlando’s Disney and Universal Studios, suggesting that they put together an ensemble.
