Funeral Services 0800 686 2148 [email protected] www.aoraki.kiwi.nz SOUTH CANTERBURY 2 | The Temuka Telegraph | November 2019 www.temukatelegraph.co.nz from our MP’s desk... A few political We are in Temuka every Tuesday myths Andrew Falloon, MP Call Chris Jones or Quentin Hix I’ve been your local MP for just on two years now, and for the most (Temuka locals who understand the community) part it’s been a fascinating, if at times frustrating, experience. 0800 QUENTIN / 03 687 9010 There’s a lot of truth in the adage that the bureaucracy can move glacially slowly. One of my greatest annoyances about politics is www.quentinhix.co.nz when everyone agrees that something should be done, but for a few Wellington based Government officials intent on slowing or blocking any progress. But a great many other myths about politics and the political process are exactly that; myths. Contrary to the way we’re often characterised by our friends in the national media, politicians don’t hate one another. Barring one or two exceptions, the 120 MPs who inhabit the Beehive and neighbouring buildings, are in it for the right reasons. I’m yet to meet any politician who wants a polluted environment, an economy in decline, or poor educational outcomes for our young Interior & Exterior people. Granted, we often have different approaches to improving Commercial & Domestic those things, but largely it’s a respectful debate. Much of the constructive work we do you’ll rarely hear reported. Painting & Decorating Specialist MPs work together on Select Committees to improve legislation and make it fit for purpose. Most laws goes through Parliament backed by both major parties, and often by all. Even those times we 0800 559 589 disagree most, where you might see some of the poorer behaviour some MPs are prone to, we leave it on the field. With several dozen political journalists based permanently at Parliament, it’s no surprise that the news headlines are dominated by what happens there. But that masks the reality, which is that Andrew Falloon MP Parliament only sits three days a week for some thirty weeks a year. The rest of the time I’m here, in the electorate working in my offices for Rangitata invites in and Ashburton, holding regular clinics in places like Temuka and Pleasant Point, or out visiting businesses, farms and you to a Seniors community groups. The most critical job an electorate MP has is the work that’s done Morning Tea. locally. The family who’ve been here for seven years, contributing to our district, who’ve been declined for a visa. The woman who’s just Catch up over a cup of tea escaped an abusive relationship with her kids and the clothes on and a Christmas mince pie her back, looking for emergency accommodation. The tradie who injured his back in a fall, desperate to get an operation and back to work, but who’s falling in between the cracks of ACC and the DHB. They’re all cases I’ve helped in the last two years, along with Thursday 28 Nov, 10am hundreds of others. Temuka RSA Recently I’ve made the decision to put my name forward to run for a second term as your local MP. I look forward to catching up with 03 683 1386 you over the next twelve months to talk to you about how I can rangitatamp@ continue to be a strong voice for our area in Parliament. parliament.govt.nz THE TEMUKA TELEGRAPH Deadline: 20th of each month, or by prior arrangement. Taking care of our elders

Jo Luxton, Labour Party List MP based in Rangitata

October 1st marked a very special day; International Day of Older Persons. A time to recognise the importance of older people in our society, and the valuable contribution that you make every day. It is a chance for everyone to celebrate the amazing older people in our lives and to say thank you. Throughout Temuka, and all over , there are many older people doing incredible things. Like the 2018 New Zealander of the Year, Kirstine Bartlett who changed the lives of thousands of New Zealand women by successfully securing equal pay legislation for caregivers in the aged-care sector. Older people make a hugely positive contribution to our economy. In the future we will need to increasingly rely on that contribution if New Zealand is to grow. Recent statistics show us that more than one fifth of our local population are over 65. Currently there are around 725,000 people aged over 65 nationally. By 2028 there will be 1 million people, nearly a quarter of the population. Our ageing population is one of our greatest achievements. A growing number of older people are healthier, more educated, more skilled and are living longer. These are all things to celebrate. In order to keep our people healthier, and care for them better when they are unwell, we need a modern, efficient health system. Budget 2019 made significant investments in fixing up more of our ailing hospitals, and empowering our DHBs to deliver more affordable healthcare in our communities, with better health Beauty 282 TEMUKA outcomes for all. Celebrating our connections in the community RATA KINDERGARTEN

The children and teachers at Rata Kindergarten have been making some amazing connections in the community this term. Their focus has been on developing stronger relationships with others and growing their understanding of places around their town. Over the last term they have invited other children and parents to their Stay and Play initiative on a Friday morning. Stay and Play is a fun get together where families are invited to be part of the session where they can enjoy the company of others, have a coffee and participate in a special Music and Movement time. “This has been a great way to get to know others in the community and to showcase Rata Kindergarten as a local educational provider “, said Head Teacher Janine Donaldson. Over the term Rata Kindergarten have visited the Mokopuna Reo playgroup at Arowhenua and undertaken a walk to the local creek. The children and teachers also spent time with the tamariki at Arowhenua School who treated them to wonderful a Kapahaka performance. The local Ngahere/forest has become a frequently visited place by the Rata Kindergarten, this is an area that offers the children a great opportunity to connect with nature and do some exploring. Every week Rata have some special visitors come from the Wallingford Rest Home. The children at Rata Kindergarten are developing some wonderful reciprocal relationships with the residents which is fast becoming a favourite time of the week for everyone. “The residents also enjoy getting involved in the programme and it is a delight to see the trust and bonds that are starting to develop” said Janine Donaldson “The children at Rata Kindergarten are so lucky to be part of this wonderful community and will continue to build on these new relationships”. words and photographs supplied

50 years of Meals on Wheels in Temuka This year Meals on Wheels celebrate fifty years of service to the Temuka community, and to mark this special anniversary past and present members gathered for an afternoon tea. The Meals on Wheels service, which involved delivering subsidised District Health Board meals to people in need, started in 1969. In those early days the meals were made at the Temuka Maternity Home which is now the site of Wallingford Home on Cass Street. When the maternity home closed a variety of locations were used to prepare meals until 1987 when Wallingford Home began preparing meals, which it is still doing today. Over the years the number of meals required has fluctuated. The most notable year for locals needing meals was 2009 when the number of meals provided rose to over 7000. The Meals on Wheels organisation would like to take this opportunity to thank all the members and volunteers who have been involved in this great service over the years. words and photographs supplied

He showed what happened to preschool-aged kids who could pass up a temptation in the short run–in this case, a marshmallow–for something better down the line. Kids who had that level of willpower experienced some surprising outcomes: they had better SAT scores years later and were better at coping with stress. When the urge to snack on something which isn’t aligned to your goals here are a few mental tricks to employ

✔ FOCUS ON SOMETHING ELSE YOU LIKE The first safeguard against caving in is to distract yourself with thoughts of other things you enjoy–like watching movies, playing music, outdoor adventures ,the latest technology, whatever. When you merely think about things you like, instead of the other thing you also like that’s right there in front of you (hey there, fries!), you’re more likely to hold out for the better reward–in this GO CRUISING case, of feeling a little better and being a little healthier than you this Christmas or New Year otherwise might. Bay Of Islands ✔ TAKE A MOMENT TO DRIFT OFF Milford and Doubtful Sounds When we remain constantly busy, we get caught up in the little things that don’t really matter, and lose track of the bigger, longer- term things that do. Research suggests that people who let their minds wander from time to time (at least not at critical times) are more likely to reconnect with the longer-term goals they have, which means a lot more to them than the stuff that’s instantly gratifying.
