UNESCAP Executive Secretary visits Bangladesh DHAKA, BANGLADESH, 11 December 2019 Dr Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) called on H.E. Ms Sheikh Hasina Wazed, Prime Minister of Bangladesh during her official visit to Bangladesh on Wednesday 11, 2019. The Prime Minister briefed the Executive Secretary on the key priorities of her government and requested support of UNESCAP especially in respect of graduation of Bangladesh from LDC status, for improving transport connectivity and for acceleration of SDGs. The Executive Secretary invited the Prime Minister to deliver a keynote address at the 76th Annual Session of the UNESCAP Commission to be held in Bangkok in May 2020. During her stay in Dhaka, the Executive Secretary also called on a number of dignitaries including the Ministers of Finance, Commerce, Planning, BIMSTEC Secretary-General, the United Nations Resident Coordinator and addressed the United Nations Country Team. The Third South Asia Forum on SDGs calls to accelerate sustainable development progress DHAKA, BANGLADESH, 8 – 9 December 2019 The Third South Asia Forum on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), was jointly organized by UNESCAP and the Government of Bangladesh in Dhaka. With over 100 participants representing governments, think-tanks, international development partners and civil society from all the 8 South Asian countries, the Forum underscored on the need for accelerated action to achieve the SDGs by 2030, including through regional cooperation. Dr. Nagesh Kumar, Director, UNESCAP-SSWA, in his opening remarks, noted that with a disproportionately larger share of 36 percent of all people living in extreme poverty and hunger globally, the world could not achieve SDGs if South Asia fails to do so.

    Latin America Confronts the United States Asymmetry and Influence

    4 A Recalculation of Interests NAFTA and Mexican Foreign Policy No event since the Mexican Revolution has had such a dramatic effect on relations between the United States and Mexico as the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). NAFTA has often been understood as the result of expansionist U.S. trade policy at a triumphal historical moment – a victory for the U.S. international economic agenda even as the Soviet Union collapsed. This interpretation largely ignores Mexico’s role in initiating talks. NAFTA fed hopes for a “free trade zone stretching from the port of Anchorage to Tierra del Fuego,” in the words of President George H.W. Bush. 1 This initiative had started with Canada a few years prior. However, it received its most important boost when the United States and Mexico decided in early 1990 to pursue an agreement that would, for the first time, tightly link the world’s largest economy with that of a much lower-income country. Despite the congruence with announced U.S. policies – President Reagan had similarly dreamed of free trade from “Yukon to Yucatan” 2 – the pact hinged not on U.S. pressure but on Mexican leaders’ profound reevaluation of their own country’s interests. NAFTA reflected a realization that Mexico could best pursue its interests by engaging the United States in institutional arrangements instead of by rhetorical counters. Even before NAFTA, Mexico relied on exports of oil and light manufacturing from maquiladoras , over- whelmingly to the United States. The rules governing these exports were open to constant negotiations and the frequent threat of countervailing duties on Mexican products.

I feel honored to be invited as the key note speaker in a program where the Right Hon’ble Prime Minister of Nepal is present as the Chief Guest. I had been eagerly waiting for this event, but I had to cancel the visit because of the recent surge of the pandemic in Bangladesh. Nepal, the daughter of the Himalayas, has got the highest peak on earth and the range of sky-touching mountains have made this country amazingly beautiful. The natural and cultural beauty of Nepal has created a special place in my heart. But unfortunately, I missed out to enjoy the beauty this time.

ECONOMICS & POLITICS New economic team tipped for cabinet Ministers awaiting royal endorsement 19/08/2015 Post Reporters After Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha yesterday submitted a new cabinet list for royal endorsement, it was confirmed that six economic ministers in five ministries are being replaced by a new team led by Somkid Jatusripitak, who will replace MR Pridiyathorn Devakula, say people familiar with the new line-up. Until Gen Prayut declared his intentions last week, speculation had run rife for two months about the possibility of a cabinet reshuffle, ever since the prime minister expressed frustration about slow economic improvement. SOMKID AS DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER It has been widely expected that Mr Somkid, an adviser to the prime minister, would become the new deputy prime minister replacing MR Pridiyathorn. Mr Somkid served as deputy prime minister, finance minister and commerce minister in Thaksin Shinawatra's government. Speculation over Mr Somkid's appointment was strengthened when he resigned as chairman of Saha Pathana Inter- Holding Plc yesterday. The law prohibits ministers from holding positions in any company in order to prevent conflicts of interest.
