An Editor in Israel: the Periodicals of Ahad Ha'am In ABSTRACT Title of dissertation: AN EDITOR IN ISRAEL: THE PERIODICALS OF AHAD HA’AM IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF MODERN HEBREW LITERATURE Noah L. Fabricant, Doctor of Philosophy, 2021 Dissertation directed by: Professor Eric Zakim, Comparative Literature Program This dissertation argues for a reevaluation of the significance of Ahad Ha’am (Asher Ginsberg) in the development of modern Hebrew literature on the basis of his work as an editor of periodicals. Critics commonly portray Ahad Ha’am as rigid and didactic, enforcing his own literary norms while excluding aesthetic and humanistic literature in favor of literature with explicit Jewish themes. Reading the periodicals edited by Ahad Ha’am shows that this reputation is exaggerated; his work is in fact characterized by significant heterogeneity and flexibility. This dissertation introduces the critical perspective and methodology of periodical studies to Hebrew literature. The first chapter shows how Ahad Ha’am as an editor brings diverse ideologies and Hebrew styles together in an organic whole, the “Odessa nusach,” in the literary collection Kaveret (1890). The second chapter argues that Yehoshua Ḥana Ravnitsky, editor of Pardes (1892-1896), lacks the editorial skill and vision of Ahad Ha’am, and as a result Pardes is divisive and lacks the unity of Ahad Ha’am’s periodicals. The final two chapters are devoted to Ha-Shiloah, the most prestigious outlet for Hebrew literature of its era, founded and edited by Ahad Ha’am from 1896 to 1903. Chapter Three traces the history of the critical reception of Ahad Ha’am’s controversy with Micha Yosef Berdichevsky over the boundaries of Hebrew literature, showing the development of a polarized standard account of the dispute that discredits Ahad Ha’am. Reading the original essays of the dispute in context shows that Ahad Ha’am’s resistance to belles lettres and humanistic literature is far from absolute, and in a sense Ahad Ha’am authors the entire controversy by collaborating with and publishing Berdichevsky and his supporters. Finally, the dissertation uses the belletristic literature published by Ahad Ha’am in Ha-Shiloah to show that his selections as an editor were not as narrow as critics claim or even as Ahad Ha’am himself prescribes in his essays. As a periodical editor, Ahad Ha’am fostered diversity and dialogue, and this should be accounted for in evaluating his influence on the development of Hebrew literature. When Professor Eric Zakim took over as my advisor, I had moved to a different state and made little progress on the project in several years. I considered giving up. At the University of Maryland, my studies were co-funded by the Comparative Literature Program and The Joseph and Rebecca Meyerhoff Center for Jewish Studies. I am grateful for the opportunity to learn and teach in both programs. Looking back on my path to these doctoral studies, I am fortunate to be a student of many beloved teachers. Dr. Irit Aharony of Harvard University was my first Hebrew teacher, and she instilled in me a lifelong love of modern Hebrew language, literature, and culture. My rabbinical studies at Hebrew Union College- Jewish Institute of Religion in Jerusalem and Cincinnati allowed me to place myself in the millennia-long conversation of the “ruaḥ,” the spirit of the Jewish people. Dr. Michael Meyer taught me to view Reform Judaism as a “response to modernity,” which inspired me to seek responses to modernity in Hebrew literature. Rabbi Dr. Edward Goldman believed I could be both a congregational rabbi and a scholar and encouraged me not to give up on either. Rabbi Kenneth Kanter is a mentor who has become a dear friend, and he has taught me much as both.     Inspiring the Poetry and Identity of a People: Walt Whitman’s Influence and Reception in the Middle East The reception of authors and their works is vastly different throughout the world, and throughout time. What a critic or person feels and responds to in one country can be dramatically different for a critic or person in another country. What people are going through and struggling with, are also greatly influenced by the writers and works of their time. Many can find solace, hope, and inspiration in these works, even if they are not from their own country, or even their own continent. Human emotion and thinking are universal: therefore, works can transcend cultures, languages, oceans, etc. to reach an audience it can inspire. Walt Whitman is one of these writers, and his works have reached people throughout the world, and inspired them as well. Whitman’s reception in America and in Europe is immense; however, it is interesting to look at some of the lesser looked at areas of the world to see just how far Whitman’s messages have traveled. The Middle East in particular has poets and other various people who have been heavily influenced by Whitman, and are inspired by his beliefs and works. Two of the main countries in the Middle East that have been directly impacted by him and his works are Israel and Lebanon. These countries have also enhanced and modified their academic institutions over the years, and because of this, have greater access to literature worldwide, such as Whitman. This has also increased the translation of works of literature (particularly Western literature) so they can be accessible to the public in these countries.

    Study Guide and Discussion Questions Part 2 – Pathbreakers Created by Jeremy Kridel Study Guide – Judaism in a Secular Age - Pathbreakers STUDY GUIDE: SIMON DUBNOW The Man and His Times: Simon Dubnow was born in Mstsislaw, in the Russian Pale of Settlement, in 1860. In his youth, he received a traditional Jewish education, studying in heder and yeshiva settings. By the time of Dubnow’s thirteenth birthday, the Russian government had established Jewish schools that used Russian as the language of instruction. Attending such schools would, together with passing entrance examinations, allow Jewish men to enroll in Russian universities. Dubnow persuaded his parents to allow him to attend one of these schools. In 1881, anarchists assassinat- ed Russian Tsar Alexander II. Responding to this event, in 1882 Russian authorities enacted the May Laws, which restricted Jewish migration and shut down government-run Jewish schools. The closed schools included the one Dubnow had been attending, and he was prevented from obtaining the diploma needed to enter university. During and after his period in Russian government schools, Dubnow studied the literature of the Haskalah [Jewish Enlightenment] movement, as well as contemporary British, German, and Rus- sian philosophers. Dubnow became interested in linguistics, history, and philosophy. He became particularly interested the Wissenschaft Des Judentums [“Scientific Study of Judaism”] move- ment in Germany. During this time, Dubnow also ceased to hold the traditional Jewish religious beliefs of his youth, and eventually determined that he no longer believed in any deity at all. Dubnow’s departure from Jewish religious faith did not mean that he left his Jewish identity be- hind.
