  • Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games: Consuming the Olympics Through Video Gaming
Fred Mason Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games: Consuming the Olympics through Video Gaming Fred Mason University of New Brunswick, Canada Dating back to 2008, the series is in its 4th installment, with two summer and two winter versions, all officially licensed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The first three games of the Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games series were produced by Sega for the Nintendo Wii and handheld devices, and the most recent (2014) by Nintendo for the Wii U platform. The games in this series bring together popular characters from the Mario and Sonic franchises to compete in Olympic events, such as track and field and alpine skiing, in facilities that look like the real Olympic venues of the time, or “dream events” set in worlds from Mario or Sonic games. The Wii platform also enables game players to use their “Mii’s,” customizable characters that players construct to look like their real- world selves. These features encourage the association of enjoyment and positive affect, and a certain amount of self-identification, with the Olympic Games. One stream of in-game rewards that players can achieve offers information on the history and organization of the Games, and on different Olym- pic sports. This can be seen as a form of “Olympic education,” where both positive aspects and criti- cism as a form of indoctrination can be applied. Other in-game rewards encourage players to “shop” with stars earned or scratch cards. This video game series could be taken as marketing the Olympic brand with enjoyable and popular video game characters.

  • August 21-22, 2004
San .Jose, California August 21-22, 2004 $5.00 Welcome to Classic Gaming Expo 2004!!! When this show first opened in 1998 no one really knew what to expect. The concept of "retro" gaming was still relatively new and was far from mainstream. It was a brave new world , where gaming fans worked to bring everyone together for a fun-filled weekend reminding us of how we got so excited about videogames in the first place. This year's event feels like that first time. For the last six years Classic Gaming Expo has taken residence in the glamorous confines of sin city, Las Vegas. It was a great run but recently we began to notice that Las Vegas is, in fact, an island . We could promote the show 24/7 for months but the one thing we could not change is that there are very few native gamers in the area. Everyone attending Classic Gaming Expo was in Las Vegas specifically to attend this show - so unless you were prepared to take a vacation on that weekend , you were going to miss it year in and year out. The move to San Jose not only brings the excitement of a fun-filled gaming weekend to a brave new world, but this brave new world also happens to be the home of videogaming itself. The roots of everything you know and love about this industry sprang not far from this very building. We think it's time to sow some new seeds and build a new home. A place where we can all experience the games, the people, and the excitement that filled our youth, all over again .

  • Film and Media History (3 Credit Hrs) Course Description: Surveys the Development of Cinema and Related Media from the 1820S to the Present
FILM 300 FILM AND MEDIA HISTORY BULLETIN INFORMATION FILM 300 – Film and Media History (3 credit hrs) Course Description: Surveys the development of cinema and related media from the 1820s to the present. Attention to the relations among key technological, cultural, and industrial changes, their causes, and consequences. SAMPLE COURSE OVERVIEW What motivates media change? Is it a primarily technological process, as we so often hear? How have different forms of mass media--print, film, radio, television, the World Wide Web--historically interacted? Does our present differ in encouraging a “convergence” of media forms, as some scholars maintain? What has it meant for large numbers of strangers to share media experiences? Who controls or regulates these experiences and how do “they” do it? Does our present, as many commentators claim, differ in the degree of global interconnectedness it affords? To answer these questions this course surveys the historical development of cinema in relation to the audiovisual mass media of the past two centuries. It begins with Benedict Anderson’s influential argument about the political and economic power of print and moves quickly to the 1820s, when print publication was the definitive mass medium and Charles Babbage’s design for the difference engine anticipated the modern computer. From there, the course examines the rise and global expansion of the motion picture industry, the emergence and transformation of radio and television broadcast networks, the development of video and computer games, and the present of web and mobile media. No semester-long course could comprehensively survey the styles, technologies, and institutions that participated in this broad and deep history.
