Frisco emerged from a pool of several cities that submitted bids to serve as the host site for the championship game for the 2011 COACHING STAFF next three years, beginning with the 2010 season. Hosted by the Southland Conference, the championship game was played at Pizza Hut Park on Jan. 7, 2011, Head Coach: Tim Walsh the culmination of a newly expanded 20-team championship bracket. As a result of this (3rd year, UC Riverside ‘77) expansion, the game was played a few weeks later than in years past. Eastern Washington rallied for a 20-19 victory over Delaware. Cal Poly qualified for the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs in 2005 and 2008. The Mustangs fell to Weber Co-Offensive Coordinator: Bryan Cook State 49-35 in Alex G. Spanos Stadium in 2008. in 2005 Cal Poly beat Montana 35-21 (Quarterbacks) (3rd, Ithaca ‘98) in the first round before falling to Texas State 14-7 in the quarterfinals. The Mustangs failed to earn an invitation to the playoffs in 2004 despite their 9-2 record while the 1997 Co-Offensive Coordinator: Saga Tuitele squad went 10-1 and also failed to make the playoffs. THE REST: Great West Conference members, 15-22 in 2009, were 17-16 in 2008 against non-conference opponents and 19-16 in 2007. Page 10 Head Coach Tim Walsh The Tim Walsh File Third Year • UC Riverside ‘77 December 17, 1954 11-13 at Cal Poly (Third Season) • 128-95 Overall (21st Season) Birthdate: Birthplace: San Francisco, CA Tim Walsh, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at the United States Military Academy in 2007 and 2008, was named Cal Poly’s 16th head College: B.A., UC Riverside (1977) football coach on Jan. 9, 2009, and, after guiding the Mustangs to a 4-7 mark Family: Jody Walsh (wife) in his first campaign, turned it around for a 7-4 record in Season No. 2. and children Luke (31), Casey (26), “Tim Walsh brings all of the qualities we were looking for in a head coach Sean (24) and Megan (17) for our football team,” Cal Poly director of athletics Alison Cone said. “He is a quality leader who understands the unique culture at Cal Poly. Ellerson left to become head coach at Army. Cal Poly, 2009-Present Walsh has compiled a 128-93 record in 20 seasons as a college head coach, including four years at Head Coach (Third Season, 11-13) Sonoma State (27-14 from 1989-92), 14 more seasons at Portland State (90-68 from 1993-2006) and two at Cal Poly (11-11 from 2009-10). He guided Sonoma State to the Northern California Athletic Conference title in 1991 (ending UC Davis’ streak of 20 consecutive conference titles), a pair of NCAA Division II play- U.S. Military Academy, 2007-08 off berths while at Sonoma State and four more postseason berths while at Portland State. Offensive Coordinator (QBs) “My goals are to continue to recruit student-athletes whose goals are to be the best they can be, both No. 9 in Rushing Offense, 2008 in the class and on the field, and become quality young men,” Walsh said. “If we do that, winning won’t be a problem. This is an opportunity to build a great program and develop a great relationship between the Recruited in nine Western states campus and the community at large.” A charismatic speaker and motivator, Walsh guided Sonoma State to three winning seasons in four Portland State University, 1993-2006 years at the helm of the Seawolves and 10 more above-.500 campaigns in his 14-year term at Portland State. With the Vikings, Walsh coached 14 All-Americans and 11 Academic All-Americans. Head Coach (90-68 in 14 Seasons) Portland State joined the Big Sky Conference in 1996. During Walsh’s 11 seasons when the Vikings Winningest Coach in School History were in the Big Sky, he coached players who earned 39 first-team All-Big Sky honors, 51 on the second team, 80 honorable mentions, 58 Academic All-Big Sky honorees, 59 Big Sky Players of the Week, 20 Three Division II Playoff Appearances national player of the week honorees, five Walter Payton Award finalists and one Buck Buchanan Award One FCS Playoff Appearance (2000) finalist. 1999 Eddie Robinson Award Finalist Cal Poly’s 2009 squad posted a 4-1 record at home, finished No. 6 in the nation in punt returns (15.60), No. 11 in turnover margin (+1.00), 19th in rushing offense (178.45 yards per game) and 23rd in time of Three Walter Payton Award Finalists possession (31:22) and was ranked as high as No. 12 in the national polls. A total of 10 Mustangs earned All-Great West Conference first- or second-team honors, including first-teamers Jake Romanelli Sonoma State University, 1989-92 (Fullback), Ryan Shotwell (defensive end) and James Chen (defensive tackle). Cal Poly’s 2010 squad also finished 4-1 at home en route to a 7-4 mark. The Mustangs earned six Head Coach (27-14 in Four Seasons) come-from-behind victories, split six games on a very difficult road schedule one year after going winless Winningest Coach in School History (0-6) and winning three straight games late in the year to put Cal Poly in a position to compete for a play- off berth. One NCAC Championship (1991) Cal Poly’s triple-option offense finished fourth in the nation in rushing offense, averaging 252.91 yards Two-Time NCAC Coach of the Year a game, and 14th in rushing defense, allowing only 106.82 yards a contest. The Mustangs also were No. 3 in punt returns and No. 16 in both time of possession and sacks allowed. Cal Poly finished the 2010 sea- son with national rankings of No. 24 in The Sports Network/Fathead.com media poll and No. 23 in the Sonoma State University, 1987-88 Football Championship Subdivision Coaches Poll. The Mustangs were ranked in the top 25 of both polls Offensive Coordinator (QBs) for the final 11 weeks of the regular season. 23 School Records Set on Offense Senior linebacker Marty Mohamed was named Great West Conference Defensive Player of the Year and five other Mustangs earned first-team all-conference honors. In addition, Mohamed and Chen were named to the FCS Athletics Directors Association Academic All-Star Team. Chen also was named to the Santa Clara University, 1986 Great West All-Academic Team for the third straight year and earned a $7,500 NCAA Postgraduate Defensive Coordinator (LBs) Scholarship. Five other Mustangs landed on the Great West All-Academic Team. Cornerback Asa Jackson earned a spot on The Sports Network/Fathead.com FCS All-American third team while slotback Mark Rodgers landed on the Associated Press FCS All-American third team as an all- Moreau Catholic High School, 1981-85 purpose player. Offensive guard Will Mitchell was selected to Phil Steele’s FCS Postseason All-American Fourth Team. Head Coach A Serra High School (San Mateo, Calif.) graduate, Walsh played football at UC Riverside in the mid- 1970s as a backup quarterback and earned a bachelor’s degree in history in 1977. Serra (San Mateo) High School, 1977-80 He began his coaching career at his high school alma mater, Serra, spending four years (1977-80) as an assistant coach before becoming head coach (1981-85) at Moreau Catholic High School in Hayward. Assistant Coach Walsh moved into the college coaching ranks in 1986, becoming an assistant coach and defensive coor- dinator at Santa Clara for one season. In 1987 and 1988, Walsh was offensive coordinator at Sonoma State before becoming head coach of the Seawolves (then the Cossacks) in 1989. His first season in Rohnert Park produced a 4-6 mark, but Former Walsh Players Walsh guided Sonoma State to 7-3, 9-2 and 7-3 records in his final three years there. Walsh embarked upon a 14-year head coaching career at Portland State in 1993, guiding the Vikings in National Football League to NCAA Division II playoff berths each of his first three seasons. Cal Poly Paul Bradford, S.D./Minn. Portland State elevated its athletics program to Division I in 1996 and, though the Vikings struggled in Dominique Johnson, Tony Curtis, Dallas the first three years at that level, there was steady progression -- from 3-8 to 4-7 and 5-6. The 1999 Viking Minnesota Terry Charles, S.D./Houston team began a string of seven winning campaigns in eight seasons, including a Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA) playoff berth in 2000. Army Shaun Bodiford, Walsh piloted Portland State to a quartet of second-place finishes in the Big Sky along with a third and None Green Bay/NY Giants three fourth-place finishes. In 14 seasons at the helm, Walsh’s Vikings were 62-21 at home. He earned Portland State Jordan Senn, two wins against FBS schools -- Hawaii in 2001 and New Mexico in 2006 -- and was 3-0 against Cal Poly Herman Smith, Indianapolis while at Portland State along with a 2-1 mark against the Mustangs while at Sonoma State. Spanos Stadium, San Luis Obispo, CA Attn: 10,331 SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Carlton Gillespie recovered a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown with 2:09 to play in the game, snap- ping a 14-14 tie and lifting No. 17 Cal Poly to a 21-14 victory over No. 19 South Dakota State in a non-conference football game. Mustang junior linebacker Marty Mohamed forced the fumble by sacking Jackrabbit backup quarterback Thomas O’Brien and Gillespie fell on the ball in the end zone for the tiebreaking score as Cal Poly evened its record at 2-2. South Dakota State fell to 3-1. Junior running back Kyle Minett scored South Dakota State’s touchdowns on runs of one and nine yards for 7-0 and 14-7 leads in the first half. Cal Poly answered with a two-yard run by sophomore slotback David Mahr in the first period, tying the game at 7-7, and a 47-yard interception return by sophomore cornerback Asa Jackson late in the second quarter, tying the game again at 14-14. Neither team scored again until the fumble recovery by Gillespie late in the fourth quarter. Cal Poly accumulated a 20-14 advantage in first downs, 202-89 in yards rushing and 333-305 in total offense. The Jackrabbits out- gained the Mustangs in passing yards, 216-131. Mustang quarterback Tony Smith completed 13 of 24 passes for 131 yards and he was intercepted once. O’Brien connected on 13 of 22 passes for 98 yards and was inter- cepted twice – one by Jackson and the other by Scottie Cordier, his third of the season, with 1:25 to go in the game, sealing the victory for the Mustangs. Jackrabbit starting quarterback Ryan Crawford completed five of 10 passes for 118 yards before leaving the game with a leg injury in the second quarter. Mahr was Cal Poly’s top receiver with five catches for 35 yards. Junior wide receiver Dominique Johnson added four catches for 31 yards before he left the game with a shoulder injury. Senior slotback Jaymes Thierry gained 57 yards on 12 carries. Smith added 47 yards on nine tripes and junior fullback Jordan Yocum netted 43 yards onb 13 carries.
