The nI ternational World of Sport and the Liability for Off-Field Indiscretions Abstract The recent terminations of the contracts of NRL player, Joel Monaghan and the AFL’s Brendan Fevola, for off-field indiscretions, has highlighted the significance of the bringing the game into disrepute clauses contained in standard player contracts. Tiger Woods’ extra-marital affairs received extensive world wide media attention, and the outcome of this negative coverage was the loss of millions of dollars in sponsorship deals. This indicates that such contracts can be terminated on the basis that a sportsperson’s behaviour was having a negative impact on the sponsor’s image. It is for the same reason that sponsors have put pressure on the governing bodies of team sports to take appropriate action for off-field indiscretions. The Court of Arbitration in D’Arcy v Australian Olympic Committee, has also held that a competitor’s behaviour in an incident where criminal charges were laid, may, in itself be sufficient to bring a sport, or themselves, into disrepute, regardless of whether the competitor is later found guilty or innocent.

The Contested Terrain of Alcohol Sponsorship of Sport and Social Policy in New Zealand Kieran Craig Cody A thesis submitted for the degree of Master of Physical Education (MPhEd) At the University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand School of Physical Education Te Kura Mahi-a-korikori Division of Sciences Te Rohi a Ahikaroa University of Otago Te Whare Wananga o Otago ` PO BOX 56, DUNEDIN NEW ZEALAND Abstract This thesis investigates the effects, consequences and contested terrain emerging from alcohol sponsorship of sport in New Zealand. Drawing from the 2010 New Zealand Law Commission report addressing the alcohol issue in New Zealand, this research examined the sport sponsorship debate in relation to one specific recommendation calling for a ban on alcohol sponsorship of sport as part of a three stage process; (1) implementation of regulations based on Loi Evin in France, where sport sponsorship and advertising is banned from sporting arenas and visual mediums; (2) prohibition on alcohol advertising where 10% of participants are under the legal drinking age, including sporting arenas and (3) the eventual complete removal of alcohol sponsorship of sport. Located within a cultural studies framework and employing a qualitative, multi- method approach including document analysis and interviews with key stakeholders, the results highlight the contested terrain of varying interests within particular sectors of New Zealand. Three key findings emerged: (1) alcohol companies have a long history of sponsoring sport and became more powerful following the banning of tobacco sponsorship of sport; (2) the issue of alcohol sponsorship of sport is a contested terrain where particular interest groups (e.g.

TO: NZRL Staff, Districts and Affiliates and Board FROM: Cushla Dawson DATE: 07 September 2009 RE: Media Summary Tuesday 01 September to Monday 07 September 2009 Warriors may ditch Vulcans: The Warriors are re-evaluating their commitment to the Auckland Vulcans and might look to the Fox Memorial as a place to farm out squad players from next season. The Vulcans is just one area being looked at in the Warriors' extensive review of the 2009 season. This year the Warriors contributed about $100,000 to the NSW Cup side in return for game time for some of their squad players like Aidan Kirk, Denan Kemp, Isaac John and Daniel O'Regan. Warriors to get tough and tight: The Warriors will play hardball with the Kiwis and won't release players who are under an injury cloud for next month's Four Nations. The club are undertaking a major review of what has been a disappointing season, looking at everything from coaches and players to travelling schedules and management structures, and one thing they have already identified is the drain of international football on players. Passion for rugby league returns to Timaru as Warriors find form to make semi-finals: Now the league season has come to a close, the Timaru Warriors have found a new lease on life after surpassing their original goal and making it into the semi-finals of the Canterbury Rugby League senior reserve championships. Unlike the well-known NRL with its league clubs, function rooms, fields and stands, the Timaru Warriors started their season at the opposite end of the scale.

Photo www.photosport.nz HE NRL are to be congratulated for a highly successful Grand Final day. Everything about the event was Tpositive- the game was dramatic and exciting, the atmosphere was electric, the entertainment first class and the weather superb. Living in the Cronulla area, I am biased towards the Sharks but except for Storm fans, I joined most of the Rugby League community in wanting the Sharks to break their 50 year drought and win their first Premiership. They experienced many tense moments before they did this and the celebrations within “ the Shire “ will go on for many weeks. The entire Sharks 17 man squad rose to the occasion. While Luke Lewis took out the Clive Churchill Medal as the game’s best player, several of his team-mates were not far behind him. Andrew Fifita posted incredible statistics. The big prop ran for 189 metres in his 23 hit-ups, made 12 tackle busts, one linebreak and 30 tackles in 61 blockbusting minutes, and for good measure, pow- ered over for the Premiership winning try with 11 minutes to play. Five eighth James Maloney also worked hard and although his numbers were not great, halfback Chad Townsend had an influential game. The Storm players concentrated on Townsend, sending their big men racing at him on the edge of the rucks while he also copped some big hits, one especially brutal from Rugby Union bound winger, Marika Koroibete, after just six minutes.

TO: NZRL Staff, Districts and Affiliates and Board FROM: Cushla Dawson DATE: 23 March 2009 RE: Media Summary Tuesday 17 March to Monday 23 March 2009 Jones saves Warriors in fairytale return: New Zealand Warriors prodigal son Stacey Jones turned back the clock and Manly's National Rugby League (NRL) title defence as he engineered a thrilling 26-24 win over the premiers at Brookvale Oval yesterday. With his team staring down the barrel of yet another road loss after the Sea Eagles had rallied to grab an eight-point lead with just 11 minutes remaining, Jones, in his first game back in the NRL since August, 2005, stepped up. Bennett calls for bad boy body: Wayne Bennett, one of the most respected figures in rugby league, has broken his silence over the recent spate of off-field incidents and called for the game to tackle the issue the same way it did with drugs and on-field violence, by appointing an independent body to sit in judgment of players. Bennett insisted alcohol abuse was not as bad among today's players as in the past, but said they were under more scrutiny now and the negative publicity was bad for the code. Meet our human wrecking ball: IF THIS was a film script, would you dismiss it as complete fantasy?
