SOCIAL STUDIES TOPIC – THE SPLENDID SOUTH LET’S KNOW ABOUT CHENNAI…. Chennai is the capital of Tamil Nadu. It was earlier called Madras. Chennai is located on the south east coast of India. Facing the Bay of Bengal. It is an important port. Chennai is warm throughout the year. The city gets a pleasant sea breeze. Marina beach is the most popular beach of Chennai. FOOD & CLOTHES Rice is the main food , it is eaten with sambhar, rasam & curd. Idly, dosa, vada, appam & uttapam are popular snacks.

IDLY DOSA UTTAPAM They wear modern and traditional clothes. Men wear veshti (dhoti) and shirt, they also wear trousers. Women wear VESHTI sarees. During festivals girls wear pavadai, which is a long skirt. People generally wear cotton clothes throughout the year. PAVADAI FESTIVAL AND DANCE All the main festivals are celebrated here.Pongal,a harvest festival is celebrated in January. Bharatnatyam is a famous dance form of Tamil Nadu. Chennai is famous for its music, art & weaving.

PONGAL (harvest festival) BHARATNATYAM INDUSTRIES Railway coaches, cars and trucks are made in Chennai. It also has a very large film industry.

RAILWAY COACH TRUCK TOURIST ATTRACTIONS… Chennai is an important tourist centre. The main attractions of the city are the beaches. The Marina Beach and the Edward Elliot Beach. Other places are the War Memorial, Gandhi Mandapan, Fort Saint George, Government Museum, Snake Park and Kapaleswarar Temple. This temple is famous for its stone carvings.
