10 pentacle theatre president’s corner

“Theater changed my life.” Have you ever heard actors, stage techs, directors or volunteers at Pentacle say that theater changed their lives? I have. And I’m not alone. Many Pentacle Theatre volunteers feel that theater participa- tion does something special in their lives, something that cannot be achieved or replicated anywhere else. I think that is due to the nature of ensemble. Ensemble is a word that I first heard in a theater. As I have David Ballantyne participated in shows over the years it captures the sense of team, unity and family that theater creates. Something special happens when the house lights dim. Directors wring their hands, ready to see their show come to life. Somewhere in the theater, an actor stands behind a door or curtain, poised to start, muscles and mind at ready. The stage crew waits at alert, senses alive, listening for their cues. Technicians’ fingers hover tensely above the controls, waiting for the next moment to push the action forward. All these individuals, moving together, make theater happen. Ensemble is the heart of Pentacle Theatre. Calendar Girls is volunteer Jill Sorensen’s first show as director. Just five years ago, she was called in to support our 2013 produc- tion of Into the Woods by lifetime member Katie Lindbeck. From there, she had various production roles through the years, assistant directing, gathering props, and serving as stage manager. As she contemplated taking on this challenge, she talked with directors about the key to their successes. Each emphasized the importance of building the right team, or ensemble. Every role matters. I asked Jill what she thinks of her experience so far, she said this: “When I decided to propose a show to direct, I was terrified. With the support of several long-time Pentacle volunteers, I jumped in with both feet. It is because of their support that I have had the most amazing experience. As a first time director, having a supportive team has been a lifer saver.” Believe it or not, you are also a member of the Pentacle ensemble. As a patron, you play an essential role on our team. Your presence makes the theater experience complete. Thank you for being at the center of great community theater. We’d love to hear your stories about how theater affected your life. Email your stories to me anytime at [email protected]. Forward, together! David Ballantyne, Pentacle Theatre Governing Board President P.S. Also, I want to express a heart-felt thank you to Heather Dunkin Toller for serving this past year as president of the Pentacle Theatre board. I follow in her footsteps, but they are big shoes, too! I’m honored to serve as the 2018 board president.
