THE UNCONVENTIONAL WOMAN SAINT: IMAGES OF AKKA MAHADEVI JAN PETER SCHOUTEN Hinduism is characterized by a strong tendency to ascetJ.c1sm and world renunciation. From the oldest period of Indian religious history, the Vedic age, up to the present day, sages and mendicants have pursued spiritual enlightenment by means of severe ascetic practices. It has never been an unusual choice to devote one's entire life to the study and practice of yoga and other spiritual efforts. Hindu ethics even recommended that all members of the ritually pure castes should take up a hermit's existence at least in the last stage of life. And the most revered character in Indian civilization was not the ruler, the teacher, or the priest, but the ascetic. Such asceticism has always been largely a male affair. There are, however, a number of women who became known by their devotional and ascetic career. Especially in the bhakti tradition, the popular devotional movements of the Middle Ages, we meet with several famous women mystics who were accomplished in ascetic practices. The first is probably Kiiraikkiil Ammaiyiir, a poetess from the sixth century who composed devotional songs in praise of Siva in the Tamil language. Images represent her in an emaciated condition because of her severe austerities. The last and best-known of the women saints in the bhakti tradition is Mirabai, who lived in Rajasthan in the sixteenth century. She rejected married life in favour of a devotional bond with ~~i:ia and her poems reflect a passionate love for her divine bridegroom. The choice for a mystical life, made by the women saints, has not remained unquestioned. -

Chapter -3 Secularism in Modern Indian Thought: Rabindranath Tagore, Swami Vivekananda and Mahatma Gandhi This chapter is an attempt to bring out the secular thoughts that are weaved in the writings of Rabindranath Tagore, Swami Vivekananda and Mahatma Gandhi. In the last two hundred years, Hinduism has been greatly influenced by the impact of the West. It has not produced any really new doctrine but it has presented its old thought in a new light. These new developments are partly the result of the influence of Christianity but not entirely new. Indian society has undergone considerable changes. Since the advent of the modern age and it is only natural that this should result in certain changes of ideas. the development is connected with the rise of a new middle class. The first period of Western impact which covers the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries is characterized by considerable conversion of Hindus to Christianity. Hindu religious leaders seem to have been at a loss in face of this challenge and little attempt was made to prevent conversion. However this period did not last very long and in fact the number of conversions seems to have been fairly small in view of the heavy impact of the west on India. This does not mean that Christianity had no effect on Hinduism . The Hindu leaders were forced to carry out considerable reform of religious practices and to revive many of the old traditions of Hindu thought which was not in practice. Though this chapter mainly deals with the secular thoughts of Rabindranath Tagore, Swami Vivekananda and Mahatma Gandhi but here the thoughts of Raja Rammohan Roy are added as it acts like a connecting thread to the former thinkers. -

Much of the present day traumatic situation is attributed to people moving away from spiritual readings. But, it is quite difficult to get reliable accounts of saintly lives because they are heavily dependent on miracles and adulation. Neither the matter nor the manner of portrayal carries noteworthy spiritual instruction or any literary merit. In such situation one eminent exception is the contemporary literature based on the life and teachings of the 19th century Hindu saint Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. His contact with the influential Brahmo leaders brought about the genesis of Ramakrishna literature. These are authentic contemporary accounts of the saint’s life and teachings. The writings of the Brahmo admirers of Ramakrishna gave rise to the subsequent literature authored by writers of repute in the last hundred years. This article discusses the mutually enriching relationship between the saint Ramakrishna and the enlightened Brahmos that subsequently gave birth to the vast literature known as Ramakrishna-Vivekananda literature which occupies the pride of place in spiritual literature as they have become very much part of mainstream literature. Skorokhodova Penza State University [email protected] Abstract The influences of the phenomena of religious consciousness on the thinking and philosophy of Modern India are described in the article, based on the Bengal Renaissance works of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, especially those of the inaugurator Rammohun Roy. He created the basic foundations of Neo-Vedanta philosophy predominantly owing to the special phenomena of re- ligious consciousness. The basic phenomena are primordial religious experience and the experience of contemplation and understanding of an Other religion (Islam and Christianity). Derivative phe- nomena are “monotheistic revolution” (term by G. Pomerants) and dialogue of religions in personal consciousness. Opening the resemblance of Vedanta and other religious traditions’ meanings to dialogue helped to achieve a new interpretation of the darśana. The novelty of Neo-Vedantism lies in the appearance of mighty ethical and social vectors of thinking. The combination of the aforesaid phenomena created the method of philosophising – free dialogue between one’s own tradition and another in order to enrich indigenous thought.
