  • Echo's End Reference, Upgraded from Firewall 64X Technology to Firewall 640X Technology]
Discrete Precision Resistor R-2R Ladder DAC Date Added: 08/24/2021 by Jörg from Dortmund, Germany [Echo's End Reference, upgraded from Firewall 64x technology to Firewall 640x technology] When I installed the DAC during the week I hadn’t too much time to take a listen during the week. As I’m very familiar with the Sound of the Reference DAC over the years, I’m pretty sure to remember how it sounds, especially with extremely familiar discs. Some might say, that this is difficult without direct comparison of the DAC with the older incarnation of Firewall modules to the one that is equipped with the actual new Firewall modules, it is new, you want it to sound better, but that might only belong to your imagination. And that might be the case with other gear, tweaks, cabling, whatever, when the difference in sound is very small. You wish it to be, but you can’t be sure. Now I listened to my most familiar discs again, and the difference is not subtle, it is simply astounding! Never would i have thought of such a big improvement, coming with the replacement of the older Firewall modules. Everything is brought out better, acoustic instruments sound incredibly natural and real. Everything has more depth and contour. It simply sounds more energetic and precise. The reverberation of voices and decaying instruments lingers longer than before. Basses are more profound. And again, I’m hearing a cornucopia of details that were previously imperceptible. And with excellent sounding discs, my room is flooded with sound, I have the feeling I’m bathing in it.

Coda 19 Musical Examples 21 Foreword I didn’t know much about Black (Colin Vearncombe) before wriDng this essay. Probably like many people I was aware of his mid-1980s hit, Wonderful Life although only through a television commercial. Although I’d played in Blackpool new wave ouPit Thruaglas Darkly, by the Dme Black came to prominence I’d decided to return to university in a part-Dme capacity to study for a music degree – knowing that the creaDve musical developments of the early 1980s had largely disappeared – eventually pursuing postgraduate degrees at the University of Liverpool and the University of Manchester. The reason I menDon this, is that by the mid-1980s I was distanced from mainstream culture along with the nostalgia associated with the period. Paradoxically, this opened-up an objecDve approach where musical judgements could be made without being shrouded by subjecDve memories of music and period. By mid-2016, my daughter had invited my wife and I to leave the UK and live in Ireland, the same Dme as Colin Vearncombe died tragically in a car accident. LiXle did I know then that the songwriter also lived on the ‘emerald isle’.

Television made possible the live transmission of musical numbers with visuals. The musical television commercial is an amalgam of conventions, with background music suddenly erupting into text, unheard by the characters but obvious to the listeners. New wave television commercials, closely allied to rock videos, resemble silent film, with syn^hronous, nondiegetic background music, and actors performing in a strange matrix of nonnaturalistic place and threatening character. A generic approach to the study of rock video (with over 100 videos viewed) identified the following distinguishing motifs and conventions of the genre: (1) fragmentation and dehumanization of the body; (2) location--separation in space and time; (3) images of horror, hell, and apocalypse; (4) hypermediation; (5) "impossible" imagery; (6) musician as leader/storyteller; (7) video as instrument of ritual celebration or cultural solidarity; and (8) shots into bright lights. Many of the motifs are present in the popular video "Here Comes the Rain Again" by the Eurthmics.

POST PUNK 198O When my interest in post-punk blossomed into a bit of an obsession, my mind fixed on two years: 1979, which seemed to have a disproportionate number of the period-defining all-time-great LPs; and 1981, which had its fair share of great albums by big names, but more significantly was seemingly endless in its supply of lesser-knowns of incredible quality and diversity. For this reason, I focused first on 1981 in the eponymous ‘1981’ box set I made between 2003 and 2004, that consisted of nine themed CD-length mixes and a whole additional mp3 “briefcase” disc, which in total featured hundreds of bands and artists. But I’d actually first made a 3-mix 1979 set for friends the year before, which finally blossomed into the (relatively) tight ‘1979: Post-Punk’ set from 2017. For whatever reason, I’d subconsciously always thought of 1980 as sort of the breather between these two different high-water-mark years. Finally, I’ve set out to delve more consciously into that elusive year of post-punk. The result of my reconsideration is this, the final box-set of a trilogy of explorations: ‘Post Punk 1980’. I could perhaps say a slightly lower proportion of my all-time favorite post- punk/new-wave/etc. albums were released in 1980, the kernel of truth in the way I’d thought of the year. But, unsurprisingly, the bigger realization as I assembled this collection was that 1980 was in no way, shape or form a down year. In fact, the explosion of quality-and-quantity nearly matches 1981.
