Northeastern alumnus and six-time champion Jim Madigan was named Northeastern hockey’s 10th head coach in program history on July 26, 2011, and enters his 10th season as leader of the Huskies’ hockey program in 2020-21. During his tenure, Madigan has led Northeast- ern to back-to-back-to-back Beanpot championships, two titles, three NCAA appearances, the first Hobey Baker Award winner and Mike Richter Award winner in program history, and seen 17 of his players drafted by NHL teams.

Madigan also played a key role in establishing the first endowed head coaching fund in university history with the creation of the Fernie Flaman Endowed Men’s Hockey Coach Fund in 2017.

Madigan brings more than 30 years of college and professional hockey experience to his post on Huntington Avenue. He played for the Huskies from 1981 to 1985 and was an assistant coach at the university from 1986 to 1993. He served as a professional scout for the New York Island- ers and from 1993 to 2011, winning a in 2009.

The 2019-20 season saw the Huskies win their program best third straight Beanpot Championship and first Belpot Championship. Madigan helped lead the Huskies to a virus shortened 18 win season, which includes being ranked all year. Under his guidance, Tyler Madden had 19 Jim Madigan goals and 18 assists in 27 games on the way to being a CCM/ACHA All-American, plus Hockey East First-Team All-Star and Ryan Shea capped off his terrific career being named a Hockey East Second-Team All-Star. The 2020 graduating class was the second winningest in program Fernie Flaman Men’s Hockey Coach history with 86. Tenth Season • Northeastern ’86 Coming off an historic 2017-18 campaign, Madigan’s Huskies reloaded in 2018-19 with one of the most successful seasons in program history. Northeastern won a team-record 27 games en route to its second straight Beanpot title, second Hockey East championship in the last four years and returned to the national tournament for the third time in the last four seasons. Mike Richter Award winner anchored Opponents W L T the Huskies throughout the season, setting program records for wins (25) and save percentage (.933) en route to CCM/ACHA All-American honors along with defenseman Jeremy Davies. Air Force 0 1 0 Alabama-Huntsville 5 0 0 The 2017-18 Huskies captured their first Beanpot title in 30 years and returned to the NCAA tournament. Hobey Baker Award winner Adam American International 1 0 0 Gaudette led the nation in scoring with 60 points (30 goals, 30 assists), earning CCM/ACHA First Team All-American, Hockey East Player of Arizona State 2 0 0 the Year, Walter Brown Award and Beanpot MVP honors, among many others. Boston University 10 17 3 The Huskies stole the hearts of Northeastern fans around the globe and established­ itself as the best team in Boston when the Huskies captured Colgate 3 2 0 the elusive Beanpot championship for the first time since 1988. With tournament MVP Gaudette supplying the offense and Eberly Award winner Connecticut 10 4 0 Cayden Primeau providing a steady presence in , Northeastern used the Beanpot win as a springboard to seven consecutive victories Cornell 0 1 0 down the stretch to earn an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament and shine the national spotlight on the program for the second time in the Clarkson 1 0 0 last three seasons.

Dartmouth 1 0 1 The 2016-17 season saw Northeastern go 18-15-5, marking the first time since 1943 that Northeastern has had four straight seasons with Harvard 4 2 0 a record of .500 or above. Senior Zach Aston-Reese had one of the most impressive individual seasons in team history with 63 points in 38 Holy Cross 2 0 1 games, the most for a Husky in more than 30 years en route to Hockey East Player of the Year, CCM/ACHA First Team All-American and Hobey Maine 16 5 4 Baker Hat Trick Finalist honors. He finished the year either tied for or owning the nation’s lead in five categories. Dylan Sikura (57 points) and 16 8 1 (52 points) also finished in the top-ten in scoring nationally, with Gaudette leading the NCAA and breaking the school record UMass Lowell 10 8 4 for power play goals in a season (16).

Merrimack 13 8 3 The 2015-16 season was an unprecedented campaign in which the team began the year 1-11-2 before a trip to Belfast turned the season Michigan 1 1 0 around as NU finished the season 21-3-3, including a 13-game winning streak that was the longest in program history and a 14-game unbeaten Michigan State 2 0 0 streak (13-0-1) that was also the longest in team history, culminating in the program’s first Hockey East Championship since 1988. During the Minnesota 3 2 0 stretch of success, the Huskies went 10-0-1 in conference games, which was the longest unbeaten streak in league play since Northeastern New Hampshire 10 11 3 joined Hockey East at the start of the 1984-85 season, and catapulted the Huskies from 12th place to sixth place in the league standings. North Dakota 0 1 0 Northeastern’s 19 wins from January to the end of the year were the most in the nation and tied for the most in team history (19 wins in 1981-82).

Notre Dame 8 3 2 The Huskies finished the 2015-16 season with 22 victories, the third most in a single-season in team history, and Madigan was named the Clark Princeton 0 0 1 Hodder Award winner as New England’s Division I Coach of the Year by the New England Hockey Writers. Prior to his tenure with the Penguins, Madigan served as a scout for the for 13 years. During his time in hockey, Madigan has worked alongside some of the RPI 1 0 0 great innovators of the game, from Northeastern’s own Ferny Flaman (NU head coach, 1970-89) to notable NHL executives Ray Shero (former Sacred Heart 4 0 0 general manager (GM), Pittsburgh), Don Maloney (GM, Phoenix), Chuck Fletcher (GM, Minnesota), Randy Sexton (GM, Florida), St. Cloud State 2 1 0 (former GM, New York Islanders), Gordie Clark (director of player personnel, ) and Jay Heinbuck (NU alumnus and co-director St. Lawrence 4 2 1 of amateur scouting, Pittsburgh). During that seven-year stint, he recruited and coached four All-Americans and 15 All-Hockey East selections. During his time on the NU bench, the Huskies won 100 games and in 1988 captured the program’s Yale 1 1 0 last Beanpot title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.

That same season, he helped lead the Huskies to the NCAA Frozen Four. Building on that success, Madigan was a key contributor to two Huskies’ Beanpot championships in 1984 and 1985. Riley has the ability to finish, and this year in Victoria’s offense, his skill set came together, putting up a tremendous offensive year as well as improving his play away from the puck. We anticipate Riley to come in and be an offensive contributor right off the bat. He’s got tremendous shot off the rush, can score from far out, and score in around the net. His speed will be good for our team and creating turnovers in that offensive zone, or utilizing the speed entering the zone to beat defenders wide. It’s nice to have someone with that outside speed, which we haven’t had in a couple years.”

NORTHEASTERN’S 2019 NCAA TOURNAMENT TEAM

Expected by many to be a rebuilding year on Huntington Avenue, the Huskies responded with a record-breaking season in 2018-19. The team finished the year 27-11-1, good for the most victories in single-season history, becoming the 14th team to ever win both the Beanpot and the Hockey East championship in the same season.

The Huskies claimed the No. 2 seed in the NCAA tournament after one of their most successful seasons ever. Paced by outstanding team performances and the Mike Richter Award-winning goaltender Cayden Primeau, the Huskies reached their seventh NCAA tournament, and third in the last four seasons, squaring off against the No. 3 seed Cornell. Northeastern started behind the game early letting up four unanswered goals in the first two periods. After recording a power-play goal from Liam Pecarraro, the Huskies could not climb any closer, ultimately falling 5-1.

Primeau and defenseman Jeremy Davies were both named CCM/ACHA All-Americans prior to signing professional contracts.

NOVEMBER 30, 2019: HUSKIES RING BELPOT

BELFAST, Northern Ireland – After falling in the first round of the inaugural Friendship Four in 2015, the Northeastern men’s hockey team (10-4-2, 6-3-1) rang the Belpot this evening after a thrilling 4-3 victory over Colgate (6-6-4, 3-2-1 ECAC) in the championship round of the 2019 Friendship Four. Senior Ryan Shea was named the Player of the Tournament after posting two goals on the night and finishing the weekend with five points off two goals and three assists.

The Huskies came out firing in the first, pouring in three goals in just under a minute to take an early lead over the Raiders. Jayden Struble struck first for Northeastern, beating the Colgate defenseman on the left side to light the lamp. Just 13 seconds after Struble’s tally, freshman Matt DeMelis broke through the defense to tip in the second of the night off the backhand to give Northeastern the 2-0 lead, before Tyler Madden fired in a shot off his own rebound to close out the Huskies’ scoring run.

After the Raiders cut the Northeastern lead to 3-2 with a set of goals, the team’s remained within one until the final moments of the game. With just 56 seconds left in the contest, junior Zach Solow knocked the puck loose in the Colgate zone to senior Shea, who pushed in the empty-net game winner to win the Belpot.

Tonight’s meetings between the Raiders and the Huskies marks the second time the teams have met on the ice in Belfast. In 2015, the teams met in the consolation round, when Northeast- ern trounced Colgate, 7-1.

BOSTON — Northeastern’s Jayden Struble and Sam Colangelo have been invited to the 2021 U.S. National Junior Team Eval- uation Camp at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, Michigan held from October 8-13. The camp is used to evaluate players that will be chosen for the 2021 U.S. National Junior Team which will play in the International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship from December 25-January 5, 2021. Struble is entering his sophomore season with the Huskies after putting up three goals with seven assists in 21 games last season. The Rhode Island native was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in the second round of the 2019 NHL Entry Draft and made big contributions right off the bat with an assist and a goal in the 2019 Friendship Four tournament helping the Huskies win their first Belpot. Colangelo is heading into his freshman year with the Huskies and is projected to be a high draft pick in next week’s 2020 NHL Entry Draft. The forward played 55 games for the USHL Chicago Steel the last two seasons putting up 31 goals and 30 assists including 58 points last season alone. BOSTON — Northeastern’s Devon Levi has been invited to Hockey Canada’s National Junior Team Sport Chek Selection Camp from Nov. 16-Dec. 13 in Red Deer, Alberta. The camp is used to evaluate players that will be chosen for the 2021 Ca- nadian National Junior Team which will represent Canada in the International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship from Dec. 25-Jan. 5, 2021.

The Quebec native is entering his freshman season with the Huskies after being drafted by the Florida Panthers in the seventh round of the 2020 NHL Draft (story). Before coming to Northeastern, he went 34-2-1 with the Carleton Place Cana- dians of the CCHL during the 2019-20 season. Standing out amongst the league, Levi led the CCHL with a 1.47 GAA, a .941 save pct. while having eight shutouts and helping his team to first place. He was named CJHL Player of the Year and the CJHL MVP, along with earning the CJHL Top Goalie Award, the CJHL Top Rookie Award, the CCHL MVP Award, the CCHL Top Prospect Award and the CCHL Goaltender of the Year Award, plus the CCHL Lowest GAA Award and was named to the CCHL First All-Star Team.
