  • Factors Afecting Progeny and Sex Allocation by The
1 FACTORS AFECTING PROGENY AND SEX ALLOCATION BY THE EGG PARASITOID Trichogramma evanescens WESTWOOD by P.K.T.N.S. Pallewatta A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of the University of London and for the Diploma of Imperial College of Science and Technology. Department of Pure and Applied Biology Imperial College, Silwood Park Ascot, Berkshire. September 1986 2 ABSTRACT Understanding the reproductive strategy of Trichogramma can be a powerful tool in improving production and quality in mass rearing produced wasps. A comparison was made of the reproductive strategy of T. evanescens Westwood, on one of its natural hosts, Mamestra bras sicae L. and on Sltotroga cerealella 01. a factitious host commonly used for mass rearing. Density dependent decreases in survival of the immature stages with increasing wasp density was obtained for both these hosts. Fitness estimates of females likewise decrease, and the sex ratio becomes more male biased. The sex ratio of T. evanescens was found to be influenced by the density of ovipositing females as well as by the size of the host resource. A method was developed for determining the primary sex ratio and clutch size. Individual wasps possess a pattern of allocation whereby males are produced at intervals of female eggs. The first egg laid by a mated female is always female and this pattern was observed to be maintained at three different rates of host encounter and when superparasitising. Superparasitoids laid a smaller clutch size than primary parasitoids but superparasitoids did not allocate a more male biased sex ratio than primary parasitoids.

Józef RAZOWSKI, Insitute of the Systematics and Evolution of Animals, Polish Academy * ofSciences, S³awkowska17, 31-016Kraków,Poland. E-mail:[email protected] I.INTRODUCTION The number of genera of Tortricidae has increased dramatically over last 50 years; by 2007 there were over 1630 described genera, including synonyms. Many of the older de- scriptions are scattered throughout the literature, and because there are few larger synthetic treatments of the tortricids for most major biogeographic regions, this large number of taxa complicates considerably the work of taxonomists on the faunas of poorly known regions of the planet. In addition, characters that define many of the genera are not clearly articu- lated. The distribution of many genera is still insufficiently known, and this shortcoming frequently results in unexpected findings, e.g., the discovery of Afrotropical genera in the Neotropics. These types of discoveries may cause confusion for specialists that focus on thefaunaofasinglegeographicregion. The literature abounds with re-descriptions and diagnoses of tortricid genera, but many are rather short, frequently lacking comparisons with similar or related taxa.

E-mail: [email protected] I. INTRODUCTION The number of genera of Tortricidae has increased dramatically over last 40 years; by 2007 there were over 1630 described genera, including synonyms.

Review of the genera of Afrotropical Tortricidae (Lepidoptera). Acta zoologica cracoviensia, 47(3-4): 167-210. Abstract. 143 genera of Afrotropical Tortricidae are listed along with their included spe- cies and comments. Only species confidently assigned to the particular genera are cited, and the distributions of the genera are based on these species. One genus, Cirriphora OBRAZTSOV, 1951 is synonymized with Coccothera MEYRICK, 1914. Several new com- binations are introduced. Clepsodes DIAKONOFF, 1957 is restituted. INTRODUCTION The tortricid fauna of the Afrotropical region is the most poorly known of any major biogeog- raphic realm on the planet. Although HEPPNER (1991, 1998) cited 250 tortricid species from the Ethiopian region, the cumulative work of DIAKONOFF includes descriptions of more species than that for Madagascar alone. Studies on the Afrotropical fauna began in the 19th century with the de- scription of Eccopsis ZELLER, 1852. Most species from this vast region were described in genera proposed for the European fauna, i.e., Tortrix LINNAEUS, 1758, Cochylis TREITSCHKE, 1829, and Cnephasia CURTIS, 1826, with which they have little in common. However, a few Afrotropical spe- cies are correctly placed in Palaearctic genera. The majority of the genera described specifically for the Afrotropical fauna were proposed by A.

Razowski & M. Krüger Abstract The type specimens of 36 species of Tortricidae in the collection of the Iziko South African Museum, Cape Town, South Africa are discussed and illustrated in colour, and illustrations of their genitalia are provided where possible. A total of 18 new combinations is proposed: Clepsis crispata (Meyrick, 1912), comb. n. (Tortrix); Doridostoma symplecta (Meyrick, 1910), comb. n. (Tortrix); Epichoristodes adustana (Walsingham, 1881), comb. n. (Cacoecia); Epichoristodes cinerata (Meyrick, 1920), comb. n. (Epichorista); Epichoristodes dorsiplagana (Walsingham, 1881), comb. n.
