It’s mated to a silky 6-speed automatic with SHIFTRONIC and a lock-up torque converter for improved perform- ance and highway fuel economy. And there’s no need to hesitate when you hit the hairpins. Engine-speed-sensitive steering — along with a fully independent suspension—helps the Veracruz handle like a refined sedan. The ride is smooth, supple and controlled. LIMITED IN LIQUID SILVER 2007 VERACRUZ | ACTIVE SAFETY It’s not just where you go that’s important, but how safely you get there. So to keep you and your loved ones safe and sound, we’ve incorporated a host of advanced systems into the Veracruz. Active safety, like Electronic Stability Control and an Anti-lock Braking System, helps you avoid acci- dents. And passive safety, like advanced airbags and a rein- forced body structure, helps mini- mize the effects should one occur. It’s important to note that Veracruz’s long list of safety fea- tures comes standard—because as far as we’re concerned, protect- ing your well-being should never be an option. SE IN BLUE TITANIUM Anti-lock Braking System ABS uses sensors to detect impending wheel lock-up and then quickly pulses the brakes to prevent it. To enhance this system’s performance, Electronic Brake-force Distribution varies brake pressure at each wheel to provide maximum braking for the road conditions. Together, ABS and EBD help maintain steering control in emergency braking situations. Electronic Stability Control1 Brake Assist When the unexpected happens, quick reaction is key Many drivers hesitate or fail to brake forcefully enough in critical to a safe outcome. And almost nothing reacts more quickly than Electronic situations. Brake Assist works in conjunction with ABS to sense a Stability Control. It constantly monitors wheel speed, steering angle, yaw and panic stop, and then automatically applies maximum braking pres- lateral g-forces while the Veracruz is in motion. When it senses that a skid is sure to shorten the stopping distance. By minimizing delayed imminent, ESC automatically applies the brakes to individual wheels and human reaction, Brake Assist is there when you need it the most. adjusts throttle input as required to keep the vehicle on its intended path. 1 Electronic Stability Control (ESC) with Traction Control System (TCS) cannot control your vehicle’s stability under all driving situations. ESC with TCS is not a substitute for safe driving practices. No system, no matter how advanced, can overcome physics or correct poor driving. The driver is always responsible for controlling the vehicle and must use caution to avoid loss of control in all driving conditions. Speed, road conditions and driver steering input will affect whether ESC with TCS can help prevent loss of control. See Owner’s Manual for details. 2007 VERACRUZ | PASSIVE SAFETY Six Airbags The standard six-airbag system1 includes advanced dual front airbags, front side-impact airbags and side-curtain airbags that extend completely from the front to the rear to effectively protect every row of passengers. The Veracruz also fea- tures a front-passenger Occupant Classification System that prevents airbag deployment if the seat is unoccupied or the passenger is below a predetermined weight. 1 The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) is designed to work with the 3-point seatbelt system. The SRS deploys in certain frontal and/or side-impact conditions where significant injury is likely. The SRS is not a sub- stitute for seatbelts, which should be worn at all times. Children under the age of 13 should be restrained securely in the rear seat. NEVER place a rear-facing child seat in the front seat of a vehicle that has a pas- senger-side airbag. SE IN LIQUID SILVER WITH GRAY LEATHER Seatbelt Pretensioners Tire Pressure Monitoring System Front seatbelt pretensioners tighten the safety belts Standard on all Veracruz models, TPMS uses electronic sen- during certain frontal impacts, helping reduce the sors in each tire to monitor air pressure, and alerts the driver occupants’ forward movement. Force limiters help via a warning light on the instrument panel as to which tire’s manage the belt’s load across the torso and hips. air pressure is low. As tested here, the Lexus costs just over $10 grand more than the Hyundai, but packs a few goodies the Veracruz can’t match. This RX has an optional nav system with backup camera, which would add $1500-$2000 to the price of the Hyundai—except for the fact that it doesn’t offer one. Hyundai says it’s coming before the end of this year. The RX also has adaptive HID headlights, real wood trim instead of the Hyundai’s plasti- wood, and a power retractable cargo-area tonneau. So some of that price gap is made up for by meaningful equipment. • 09 Hyundai Veracruz
09 HYUNDAI _ VERACRUZ ARE WE THERE YET? It’s a common sentiment among children riding in the back seat, but you may be surprised to learn that it’s also the way we approach making cars here at Hyundai. We’re always asking ourselves if our vehicles are as good as they can possibly be. Are the engines smooth enough? Is the design stylish enough? Is the performance inspiring enough? Are the emissions low enough? Is the vehicle safe enough? In the end, the answer is yes. And no. Because as proud as we are of our vehicles, as impressively as they perform, as handsomely as they’re styled and as safe as they unquestionably are, we’re simply never satisfied. As a driver, you deserve nothing less. Think about it. LIMITED IN NATURAL KHAKI MOre INterIOR ROOM THAN AN AUDI Q7 They both seat seven, but the Veracruz bests its German counterpart in the comfort department, offering more room for important things like arms, shoulders, legs and heads. It also boasts 60/40 split seats to stow more cargo. And with a sticker that’s around 13 grand less, you’ll notice there’s definitely less empty space in your wallet.
