Climate Risk Profile Embu County Highlights Kenya County Climate Risk Profile Series Climate Risk Profile Embu County Highlights Embu County heavily relies on the agricultural sector both as the principal source of food and nutrition and as the backbone of the economy. The great majority of the population (70%) derives their livelihood from crop production and livestock keeping. The key value chain commodities produced by the majority of farmers are maize (61-100% of the farmers), followed by dairy cattle (41-60%) and banana and beans (21-40%) which contribute to both household food and livelihood security. In spite of the importance of agriculture, an estimated 20% of households are considered food insecure. Food insecurity peaks between the months of April and June, when harvested stocks have been depleted. This is mostly experienced in the hot and dry semi-arid lower zones of Mbeere North and South. Food insecurity is tied to a combination of factors that include climatic conditions, extreme weather and climate shocks, natural resource management, and access to appropriate inputs. Water is a constraining factor that limits productivity for both crop production and livestock rearing. Only 5% of the County is under irrigation and there is great potential to expand the irrigated area through water harvesting and storage in ponds and pans. Reliance on rain-fed agriculture makes farmers in Embu especially vulnerable to climate shocks and changes. Historical records indicate that that both dry spells and extreme precipitation are recurrent hazards in the County. Dry spells during the second wet season average around 65 consecutive days of moisture stress. Extreme precipitation and flood risks are quite high on average in both seasons. Some of the most widely used on-farm strategies include: soil and water conservation, tree planting, changing crop type and water harvesting. Female-headed households are more likely to adopt water harvesting techniques because it reduces the time spent gathering water for domestic purposes and it ensures reliability and availability of water for the household. Male-headed households are more likely to invest in longer term strategies to improve yields and ensure sustainable production through diversification in enterprises and off-farm employment. These differences may relate to differences in access to information and resources. In Embu County, the main sources of information for farming practices, including coping and adaptation strategies, are traditional, indigenous knowledge and radio (GoK, 2014). Traditional knowledge and radio are considered an important source of information to over 70% of the households irrespective of the gender. Off-farm service, such as early-warning systems, extension and training, credit, storage facilities and market information, are offered to farmers by public, private, non-profit, faith-based organizations, local and international organizations. However, the capacity to deliver relevant and timely information to farmers throughout the County is limited by coordination, infrastructure, and resource constraints. The various departments and institutions in Embu County lack proper coordination and collaboration thus leading to redundancies and duplication of roles in addressing and building resilience to climate change. As of 5th May 2015, a total of 2156 cases and 42 deaths (CFR=1.9%) had been reported nationally distributed as follows: Nairobi 145 cases, 5 deaths (CFR 3.4%); Migori 915 cases, 12 deaths (CFR 1.3%); Homa Bay 377 cases, 5 deaths (CFR 1.4%) , Bomet 272 cases, 2 deaths (CFR 1.5%) ,Mombasa 69 cases, 5 deaths (CFR 7.2%), Muranga 278 cases, 1 death (0.4%), and Nakuru 100 cases, 12 deaths (CFR 12%) Cumulatively, 274 new cases were reported in the last one week (164 in Muranga, 73 in Nakuru, 17 in Mombasa and 20 in Nairobi). This is an increase from the previous week where 35 new cases were reported. 6 new deaths were reported in the last one week (5 in Nakuru and 1 in Nairobi). The Difference-in-difference (DD) method was used to assess the impact of the mango IPM on magnitude of mango rejection and insecticide expenditure and net income. The study revealed that on average, mango IPM participants had approximately 54.5 percent reduction in magnitude of mango rejection; spent 46.3 percent less on insecticide per acre and received approximately 22.4 percent more net income than the non participants. These imply a high economic benefit from the application of the fruit flies IPM technology and mango farmers would profit significantly if the intervention is expanded to widely cover other mango growing areas in Kenya. 1. Box 52428-00200, Nairobi, Kenya [email protected] Abstract: Ground dwelling macro invertebrates are essential for soil functions and other significant ecological process such as nutrient cycling. The distribution and ecological role of crawling macro invertebrates may be influenced by anthropogenic factors. Human factors such as deforestation and agricultural activities that destroy the habitat pose great threat for the survival of macro invertebrates. Most of the natural ecosystems including forests in Kenya have been encroached, segmented and reduced in size by the rapidly growing population. However, studies on the impact of such destructive activities on the abundance and distribution of ground dwelling macro invertebrates are limited. Thus, there exist information gap on macro invertebrate composition and their distribution in different ecosystem and habitat segments in Kenya. Such studies are necessary in generating knowledge and creating wholesome understanding to facilitate policy making, habitat management and conservation of crawling macro invertebrates. Based on the above highlights, this study was conducted to determine the effect of land use on the distribution and abundance of ground dwelling macro invertebrate in Kirimiri forest in Embu County, Kenya between January and April 2016.
