  • Ranking the Greatest Cyclists of All Time
The Outer Line The External Perspective On Pro Cycling Rankinghttps://www.theouterline.com The Greatest Cyclists Of All Time Who are the greatest male cyclists of all time? That would make a good trivia question at the cycling club’s annual dinner, and it’s sure to provide fodder for unending debate. Think about it: How many of us in America know enough cycling history to even come up with five good names? Sure, you could list the men who have won five Tours de France: Anquetil, Merckx, Hinault, and Induráin. (I’m omitting Armstrong, whose seven victories were officially annulled.) But that’s only four names. And Le Tour, of course, is only one race. Most of us don’t know our cycling like we know our baseball. Any baseball fan past infancy knows the names Ruth and Gehrig, Mantle and Mays, Clemens and Bonds. But American cycling fans would be hard- pressed, I think, to remember — let alone spell — the names Joop Zoetemelk and Roger de Vlaeminck. Both of those men, as it turns out, probably belong on any list of all-time greats. Zoetemelk was a Dutch ironman who started and finished the Tour 16 times (and won it once). De Vlaeminck was a Belgian steam engine who won the brutal Paris-Roubaix four times, the marathon Milano-Sanremo three times, and Tirreno-Adriatico, the Race of the Two Seas, six times. I know all of this thanks to CyclingRanking.com, a well-researched and well-documented site that attempts to list, in order, the greatest professional men’s cyclists of all time. The site is a labor of love by a Dutch family that started out as a kitchen-table exercise in the 1970s, and it will humble even the most studious cycling fans.

Hinault vs. LeMond: An Application of Game Theory to the 1986 Tour de France Trevor Gillen and Josep Maria Nadal Fernandez Kellstadt Graduate School of Business DePaul University, Chicago Illinois Hinault vs. LeMond: An Application of Game Theory to the 1986 Tour de France Trevor Gillen & Josep M. Nadal Fdez. Abstract: This paper intends to examine the application of game theory analysis to the sport of cycling, specifically the 1986 Tour de France. Given the individualistic yet cohesive nature of the sport of cycling, there is more personal incentive and motivation behind the decisions made by each competitor compared to other, more teamwork oriented sports. The decisions of one cyclist have a profound effect on the other competitors, resulting in a rather complex case of game theory. The following research will observe and apply the principles of game theory to the various choices made by two cyclists, Greg LeMond and Bernard Hinault, throughout the 1986 Tour de France, as well as providing a glimpse into the evolution of the sport of cycling. 2 Hinault vs. LeMond: An Application of Game Theory to the 1986 Tour de France Trevor Gillen & Josep M. Nadal Fdez. One of the most beautiful and moving moments in the history of sports took place in the Tour de France of 1986 when two of the greatest riders of all times, Hinault and Lemond crossed the finish line together in what apparently was seen by the world as a sign of cooperation and friendship beyond their personal rivalry. Yet, a few minutes later this entire dream turned into a nightmare when Hinault without hesitation stated that the Tour had not finished yet and he was still planning on winning despite their previous agreement of letting Lemond win.

In contrast to the other bikes on these pages, Coppi’s Bianchi didn’t use a Campagnolo system to select gears. The reason: a sponsorship agreement with French manufacturer Simplex. Story Text: Cyclist Lance Armstrong is the overwhelming favourite to win his third Tour de France. At the American's invitation, David Walsh went to see him to discuss one subject - doping He earns $8m a year. Endorsements run to another $5m. He once held a press conference in New York and the billionaire Donald Trump turned up to hear him speak. Nowadays, he charges twice as much as former president Bill Clinton for speaking engagements and when not recounting history, he is creating it. Lance Armstrong is his name. He is the world's best cyclist. Yesterday, he launched his bike from a ramp in Dunkirk and set out on the Tour de France. He is favourite to win for the third consecutive time and become only the fifth cyclist to do so. It is not solely success that draws us to Armstrong but also what his achievements symbolise. Less than five years ago he was stricken with testicular cancer that spread to his lungs and brain. Surgeons suggested he might not live but they didn't know their patient. Armstrong has been to hell and back. First to good health, then to the famed yellow jersey. His spirit and good drugs enabled him to make the first part of the journey. But for two years there has been endless speculation about Armstrong, his remarkable recovery and his relationship with drugs, not just those taken to kill the cancer but also those taken by cyclists to help them compete.
