The creative team will share the $20,000 commission. The project will receive creative and developmental support over an 18-month period, including two developmental workshops and inclusion in Latté Da’s annual NEXT Festival. In addition to the NEXT Generation Commission, Theater Latté Da’s new works initiative is also supporting playwrights Steven Epp, Bradley Greenwald, Harrison David Rivers, Kate Sutton-Johnson and Joserra Zuniga to create new musicals. Throughout its history, Theater Latté Da has found ways to bring artists together to create new work, resulting in some of its most memorable and beloved productions from All is Calm: The Christmas Truce of 1914 and A Christmas Carol Peterson to Five Points. “Even in these uncertain times, we are investing in our future and the future of the art form by continuing to seed and support new work. -

Monday 7 January 2019 FULL CASTING ANNOUNCED FOR THE WEST END TRANSFER OF HOME, I’M DARLING As rehearsals begin, casting is announced for the West End transfer of the National Theatre and Theatr Clwyd’s critically acclaimed co-production of Home, I’m Darling, a new play by Laura Wade, directed by Theatre Clwyd Artistic Director Tamara Harvey, featuring Katherine Parkinson, which begins performances at the Duke of York’s Theatre on 26 January. Katherine Parkinson (The IT Crowd, Humans) reprises her acclaimed role as Judy, in Laura Wade’s fizzing comedy about one woman’s quest to be the perfect 1950’s housewife. She is joined by Sara Gregory as Alex and Richard Harrington as Johnny (for the West End run, with tour casting for the role of Johnny to be announced), reprising the roles they played at Theatr Clwyd and the National Theatre in 2018. Charlie Allen, Susan Brown (Sylvia), Ellie Burrow, Siubhan Harrison (Fran), Jane MacFarlane and Hywel Morgan (Marcus) complete the cast. Home, I’m Darling will play at the Duke of York’s Theatre until 13 April 2019, with a press night on Tuesday 5 February. The production will then tour to the Theatre Royal Bath, and The Lowry, Salford, before returning to Theatr Clwyd following a sold out run in July 2018. Home, I’m Darling is co-produced in the West End and on tour with Fiery Angel. How happily married are the happily married? Every couple needs a little fantasy to keep their marriage sparkling. JOSIE LAWRENCE to star as MOTHER COURAGE Josie Lawrence Photo by Scott Rylander Multi award-winning Josie Lawrence, one of the UK’s best-loved actress and comedians is to star in a new production of Mother Courage and her Children. Josie said: “I first read Mother Courage when I was an 18-year-old drama student and immediately fell in love with the play. Now I feel ready to play her. It’s a major tick on my theatrical bucket list.” Mother Courage and her Children by Bertolt Brecht is translated by Pulitzer Prize-winning Tony Kushner, whose critically acclaimed, sold-out production of Angels in America at the National Theatre was last week broadcast live to cinemas around the UK. Mother Courage and her Children will run 2 November - 9 December at Southwark Playhouse. Press night is Monday 6 November at 7.30pm. In a land ravaged by war, Mother Courage pulls her cart with her three children in the wake of the army, trading with soldiers and attempting to make profit from the war. Widely considered to be one of the greatest plays of the 20th century,Mother Courage And Her Children has been described as the greatest anti-war play of all time. It remains a timely exploration of displacement, war weariness and invisible enemies. It mirrored then, as it does now, the growing fear at the ever-advancing threat of terror infiltrating our everyday lives and our desire to protect ourselves and what is ours at any cost. Mother Courage And Her Children is directed by Hannah Chissick, returning to Southwark Playhouse after the success of the musical Side Show, and is produced by Danielle Tarento, whose recent successes at the same venue include the UK premieres of Grey Gardens (with Sheila Hancock and Jenna Russell), Titanic, the world premiere of Gods and Monsters and Chekov’s Three Sisters reworked for the 21st century by award-winning playwright Anya Reiss. -

Liz Schafer reviews Shakespeare’s Birthday Party 2015 This year’s Shakespeare’s Birthday Party was marked by a ‘can do’ spirit of improvisation and the result was a thoroughly enjoyable event. The Old Vic circle bar, where the party is normally held these days, was full of props and so there was no room for the party. Crisis! But Ned Seago, the Old Vic doorman, arranged for the party to be held instead backstage in the rehearsal room. Once the rehearsal room had been commandeered, Nickolas Grace stood outside the theatre greeting guests with his usual charm and directing us to the Webber Street Stage Door entrance. After we had all recovered from the lift, which probably should be granted ancient monument status – it had lovely wooden panelling and a sign sternly warning Maria Friedman with Jamie Parker and The Bard everyone that ‘weight must be evenly distributed’, we were able to relax in the open, airy rehearsal room. This, as members with long memories reminded us, used to be the venue for the VWA parties. I would certainly vote for parties being held there in the future if at all possible. As Nick pointed out, although the floorboards were now sanded down, they were the very ones trodden by stars such as Olivier, Ashcroft, Gielgud in their days at the Vic, when they were in rehearsal. Nick certainly had plenty of interesting memories of working in that room. -
