ELEVEN SAYS ISSUE 278 11 THE NEWSPAPER OF THE GROUP OF CHURCHES COVERING 11 PARISHES Good News and Thank You!

Following the announcement that The Revd Canon Nick Garrard, currently Rector of the Broadside Benefice in this Diocese, has been appointed to the post of Priest in Charge of the Bramerton Group (Rockland) and Bishop's Officer for Christian Spirituality through the Creative Arts, it is very appropriate to express our welcome of this news and to wish Nick and his family well as they prepare to leave their current ministry and make the transition into a new one.

On behalf of the Group may I also say how very grateful we are to the Revd Mandy Ansell for all that she has done to support the Rockland Benefice of churches during the interregnum, to Brian for his understanding and support and all who have given their time and energy to maintain and further the worship, ministry and mission in the benefice.

These are exciting times at the Wheatfen Nature Reserve at Creation Springs Mountains Sustain Sun Surlingham with the launch due of a brand new website (www.wheatfen.org). Designed by Tom Waterfall, it incorporates Earth Ravines Gladdens Lions Good original artwork inspired by Wheatfen drawn by Glyn Brewerton, Senior Leviathan Satisfied Lecturer in Illustration at Norwich University of the Arts. Foundations Branches Wine Living Renew According to Dick Meadows, Chair of the Ted Ellis Trust that manages Boundary Stork Oil the Reserve, the drawings have given the new website a unique Sea Nests Bread Food Glory quality. It is hoped that Glyn’s original artwork will also eventually grace the walls of the Study Centre at Wheatfen.

The site will include news and pictures from Wheatfen’s annual Swallowtail Day in June. The swallowtail is Britain’s largest butterfly and is an iconic species. Wheatfen is one of only a handful of sites where it survives to breed.

This year the event coincided with World Swallowtail Day and attracted its largest number of visitors for many years with some enthusiasts travelling from well beyond Norfolk. Happily, there was an abundance of butterflies all performing in perfect swallowtail weather, warm and sunny with a slight breeze.

Warden Will Fitch and volunteers also led guided walks around the 140 acres of waterways, woods and broads for a feast of flora and fauna as well as sightings of Norfolk hawker dragonflies and marsh harriers. And at least one swallowtail didn’t last the day when it was taken by a hawker for a lunchtime snack.

A couple of upcoming events at Wheatfen for the diary: a guided evening walk on August 25 in search of bats using high tech bat detectors and on October 14 a guided foray with the Norfolk Fungus Study Group looking for the many fungi species around the Reserve.

There is a nominal charge for each and booking is essential. Contact the Warden on 01508 538036 or email [email protected] . The Reserve only makes small charges for these events. At all other times entry and car parking is entirely free as the Trust wants to encourage visitors to enjoy the tranquillity and stunning beauty of this special place.

Thurton continued . . . Below are some of the pictures taken at the village fete. Dave Cossey, a former Youth Worker in the Bramerton Group, was ordained as a deacon on 29th June at Norwich Cathedral. Dave left us in the summer of 2017 to study for 2 years at Ridley Hall in Cambridge and will serve as a curate in the parishes around Dersingham in West Norfolk. (photos on Diocesan website)

Plans for the holiday club, as advertised in the last edition of 11 Says, continue apace.

The Open the Book Teams are having a well-earned rest for the summer holidays. These are two teams of people who visit Thurton and Alpington primary schools every two weeks during the term to bring bible stories to life for the children. Adults are often seen carrying very odd-looking equipment to/from the schools, such as prison gates and cardboard boats. The children love to see church members visiting the schools and are always keen to take part.

With the retirement of our former Reader, Jill Stevens, the church parish team have taken over the leading of the Evening Prayer service at the church, usually at 4pm on the fourth Sunday of each month. Please check the rota on the back page of 11 Says to make sure the service is on. The parish team also lead the service at the village hall, usually at 11am on the third Sunday of each month (no service in August due to holidays). This time of worship is designed to be especially suitable for youngsters, but is equally enjoyed by older folk. We have enjoyed ice-breakers such as Happy Families and guessing what is inside various parcels.

The congregation of St Ethelbert’s Church very much appreciate all the work that goes on behind the scenes, such as flower arranging, cleaning and maintaining the churchyard. It is always quite amazing to read the visitors book to see how many people visit our lovely church and remark on the peace and tranquillity to be found. They appreciate that the church is always open, made possible by another team of people who lock and unlock the church on a daily basis.

Chris Limbach Ashby &Thurton Village Hall & Playing Field 100 Club - Thank you to all who supported us again for another year’s contribution to the 100 club. This helps with much needed funds for Our Village Hall. The winning amount each month is £40 with an extra £120 in November. The winner for June was 45, I. Webb.

50 Year Celebration of our Village Hall Fete - Thank you to everyone who attended, helped and donated prizes for our 50 year anniversary fete. Despite the extremely hot weather many people came out to support our event. A special thank you to David Catchpole who opened our fete. David was one of the original trustees on the committee who were responsible for establishing our village hall and playing field. Thank you to the W.I. ladies who helped serve teas and supplied such lovely cakes on the day. Thank you also to local businesses ACL- Appreciating Classics Limited and Ashby Plant Hire for bringing a host of vehicles and plant machinery to the event. Thank you to the George and Dragon for providing us with a bar. Thank you also to Loddon Beat Manager for arranging PC James Wonnacott to attend with drones which were a huge hit with the children. We are delighted to announce that we raised over £1000 which will now go towards our new car park.
