  • BURMA: Continuing Large-Scale Religious Freedom Violations
FORUM 18 NEWS SERVICE, Oslo, Norway http://www.forum18.org/ The right to believe, to worship and witness The right to change one's belief or religion The right to join together and express one's belief This article was published by F18News on: 5 April 2005 BURMA: Continuing large-scale religious freedom violations By Benedict Rogers, Christian Solidarity Worldwide http://www.csw.org.uk Widespread religious freedom violations by the Burmese government continue, with Christians from the ethnic Karen, Karenni, Chin and Kachin nationalities and Muslim Rohingyas suffering particularly badly, Forum 18 News Service has found. It remains difficult to gather reliable information from inside Burma, but it is estimated that about 300 Buddhist monks and novices are in jail for protesting against the ruling military regime. Regime troops have pulled down the last remaining Christian cross on public display, and the regime has often forced Christian villagers to construct Buddhist pagodas in place of Christian crosses. Christians in the cities have more freedom than in rural areas and according to a Burmese church leader in Rangoon, "we cannot say we are persecuted for our faith - but there are a lot of restrictions". Religious persecution continues to be closely tied to ethnic and political conflicts, and the military regime tightly controls state-permitted religious activity. Amid widespread government religious freedom violations, Christians among the ethnic Karen, Karenni, Chin and Kachin nationalities and Muslim Rohingyas suffer particularly harsh persecution. But while Burma's ruling military regime, the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC), promotes the spread of Buddhism in ethnic areas with large Christian or Muslim populations, it is simply using Buddhism as a political tool.

  • The TENTH ANNIVERSARY of Receiving the Status of a University
„Analecta Cracoviensia” 51 (2019), s. 363–447 DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.15633/acr.3648 The TENTH ANNIVERSARY of Receiving the Status of a University. The 622nd academic year at the Pontifical University of John Paul II in Krakow In the 2018–2019 academic year, we celebrated the tenth anniversary of the Pontifical University of John Paul II in Krakow, which previously functioned under the name of the Pontifical Academy of Theology in Krakow. Due to the decision of Pope Benedict XVI, the Congregation for Catholic Education issued a decree on June 19, 2009, that ele- vated our university to the rank of a pontifical university. The decree was signed by its then-prefect, Cardinal Zenon Grocholewski, and it states: “Responding positively to the requests of the most distinguished Cardinal Stanisław Dziwisz, Metropolitan Archbishop of Krakow and the Great Chancellor of the Pontifical Academy of Theology in Krakow and honoring the memory of his magnificent predecessor, Servant of God Pope John Paul II, Pope Benedict XVI has decided (decrevit) to elevate (promovere) the Pontifical Academy of Theology to the status of the Pontifical University of John Paul II for the de- velopment of ecclesiastical studies, deciding that its organization would fully and faith- fully correspond to Church norms, above all the Apostolic Constitution Sapientia Chris- tiana and the Ordinances attached to it, granting it rights and duties that in accordance with canonical legislation pertain to legally erected Church universities, while respect- ing other legal principles that should be followed regardless of any contrary decrees.”1 Pursuant to this decision, our university remained an ecclesiastical university, and its aim is to “develop ecclesiastical studies” (ad disciplinas ecclesiasticas colendas, see: Code of Canon Law, 1983, Canon 815), which include theological studies, canon law, and Church history.

Keynote Address Rev. Fr. Indunil K. Kodithuwakku, Under-Secretary, Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue Excellencies, Distinguished Participants, Ladies and Gentlemen 1- GREETINGS On behalf of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue, and in the name of H.Em. Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran and Rev. Fr. Miguel Ángel Ayuso Guixot, M.C.C.J, President and Secretary respectively, I wish to welcome you to the Fifth Buddhist-Christian Colloquium. Both Cardinal Tauran and Rev. Fr. Ayuso asked me to convey to each one of you their warm greetings and prayerful best wishes. I know some of you have travelled great distances to be here and your presence sends a powerful signal about our common determination and commitment to foster fraternity together. The Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue (PCID) created in 1964 as the central office of the Catholic Church for the promotion of interreligious dialogue, is tasked with fostering mutual understanding, respect and collaboration between Catholics and followers of other religions on the basis of common values. This year marks the 50th Anniversary of Nostra Aetate, the Declaration on the Relations of the Church to Non-Christian Religions which has certainly inspired the members of the Catholic Church for half a century to promote relations of respect and dialogue with their religious neighbour. I would like to seize the occasion to thank you, dear Buddhist friends for your long lasting relationship with the Catholic Church and it is my fervent hope that this Colloquium may provide us with an opportunity to further renew our mutual respect, friendship and cooperation. 2. BUDDHIST-CHRISTIAN COLLOQUIA During last fifty years, the PCID has been involved in dialogue and collaboration with Buddhists throughout the world.

1 PAESI E UOMINI NEL TEMPO COLLANA DI MONOGRAFIE DI STORIA, SCIENZE ED ARTI DIRETTA DA SOSIO CAPASSO ───── 13 ───── LA NOMINA DI MONS. ALESSANDRO D’ERRICO AD ARCIVESCOVO TITOLARE DI CARINI E NUNZIO APOSTOLICO IN PAKISTAN RACCOLTA DOCUMENTARIA CURATA DA SOSIO CAPASSO E TERESA DEL PRETE ISTITUTO DI STUDI ATELLANI NOVEMBRE 1999 Tip. Cav.
