FLYERS VS. CAPITALS The Flyers and Capitals were able to complete their four-game season series this year, with the Flyers posting a record of 3-0-1 and earning seven of a possible eight points. It’s the best season the Flyers have had vs. Washington in terms of points since going 3-1-1 in five games under the 30-team scheduling format in 2013-14, and it’s the best they’ve had in terms of points percentage (.875) against the Caps since going 3-0-1 against them in the 2005-06 campaign.

The Flyers and Capitals have met one another five times in the playoffs over their respective histories. The most recent showdown was in 2016, when the Caps took a six-game win in the First Round. The Flyers lost to Washington in 1984 and 1988 as well, and took series wins in 1989 and 2008. All five series between the teams have been in the first playoff round of its respective season.

Brendan Leipsic’s goal 6:13 into the game was the only one of 36 Washington shots to get past Hart in regulation and , the latter of which was forced when Claude Giroux put home a feed from Jake Voracek during a power play 6:38 into the third. Giroux also scored in the shootout, but Washington goals from T.J. Oshie and Evgeny Kuznetsov held up on a pair of saves from Holtby in the session. Hart earned first star honors with those 35 saves, while Holtby was named third star with 30 stops. Stars of the Game: 1 – Carter Hart; 2 – Evgeny Kuznetsov; 3 – Braden Holtby.

Travis Konecny opened the scoring 3:24 into the contest, and after the Capitals took a 2-1 lead on tallies by Nicklas Backstrom and Jakub Vrana, Robert Hagg tied things up with just under 42 seconds before the intermission. Hayes scored his goal after the Flyers withstood a nine-shot barrage from Washington to open the second period, and it stood up with Carter Hart blanking the Caps over the final 40 minutes with 20 of his 26 saves. Braden Holtby took the loss despite 24 stops. Stars of the Game: 1 – Kevin Hayes; 2 – Travis Konecny; 3 – Jakub Vrana.

Saturday, February 8, 2020 – Flyers 7, Washington 2 at : The Flyers scored three times in 1:45 early in the second period to blow open a 1-1 tie and added three more in the third period en route to a 7-2 win. The teams traded power play goals in the waning minutes of the first period, with Sean Couturier picking one up with 4:38 left in the frame, only to see T.J. Oshie get it back with 2:42 to play. Michael Raffl started off the second-period sprint at the 2:45 mark, and Couturier followed it up 14 seconds later with his second of the contest. Then James van Riemsdyk tipped home a shot from Matt Niskanen at 4:30 to make it 4-1. The three third-period goals came in the span of 5:04, starting with an unassisted tally from Nicolas Aube-Kubel 2:58 into the period. Travis Konecny followed that up just under three minutes later, and then Claude Giroux finished up the Flyers side of the scoring with a power play tally at 8:02. Evgeny Kuznetsov added one for Washington with 7:43 to play. Brian Elliott stopped 25 of 27 to earn the win; Braden Holtby made 18 saves on 25 shots in 47:22 of action before stepping aside for Ilya Samsonov, who stopped the only shot he saw in the final 11:58. Stars of the Game: 1 – Sean Couturier; 2 – Claude Giroux; 3 – Brian Elliott.

Wednesday, March 4, 2020 – Flyers 5, Washington 2 at Capital One Arena: Ivan Provorov (1G 1A), Kevin Hayes (1G 1A) and Derek Grant (2A) each had two-point games as the Flyers rebounded from allowing the game’s first goal to take a 5-2 win in Washington. Garnet Hathaway made it 3-2 late in the second, but the Flyers got the only two goals of the third, from Provorov and from Scott Laughton, to seal the win. Brian Elliott stopped 25 of 27 shots in earning the win, while Braden Holtby turned away 24 of 29 in the loss. Stars of the Game: 1 – Kevin Hayes; 2 – Ivan Provorov; 3 – Derek Grant.

2019-20 SEASON SUMMARY The Flyers were one of the NHL’s hottest teams at the time of the NHL’s pause following the games of March 11. They were 9-1 in their final 10 games before the break, having rattled off a nine-game winning streak from Feb. 18 – March 7 that was ended by the Bruins on March 10 in the Flyers’ final game before the pause. The Flyers were in Tampa preparing to take on the Lightning on March 12 when the season stopped.

The Flyers were 19-6-1 over their final 26 games from January 8 – March 10, which tied them with the Bruins for the best record in the NHL during that stretch. They outscored their opponents 94-62 during that run.

The Flyers started the season in Europe, playing an exhibition game in Lausanne, Switzerland before opening the 2019-20 season with a 4-3 win over the in Prague, , on October 4. That was 298 days ago, or nine months and 24 days. Following the Europe trip, the Flyers returned home for one game before embarking on a West Coast swing. Between their departure for Switzerland on September 27 and their return home from Edmonton on October 17, the Flyers traveled more than 13,500 miles over the course of 20 days.

The Flyers compiled a record of 22-8-5 against the other 11 teams that qualified for the expanded Eastern Conference playoff format, good for a .700 points percentage. The only playoff teams against which the Flyers had a sub-.500 record were the NY Islanders (0-2-1) and Tampa Bay (0-2-0).

AROUND THE RINK

Joel Farabee is expected to make his Stanley Cup Playoff debut today, which would make him the first Flyer born in the 2000s to appear for the team in a playoff game. Farabee became the first 2000-birth-year player in Flyers history when he made his NHL debut back in November. Egor Zamula, who spent this past season with Calgary of the , is the only other 2000-born player on the Flyers roster; he has yet to appear in anything other than an exhibition game for the team.

Carter Hart became the youngest goaltender in Flyers history to win a playoff game with Sunday’s victory over Boston. By doing so at the age of 21 years and 355 days, Hart surpassed the previous mark held by Pete Peeters of 22 years, 235 days set on April 8, 1980. Hart, who will turn 22 on August 13, set a franchise record as the youngest Flyers goalie to record a back on Oct. 9 vs. NJD. His 43 games this season were the most ever by a Flyers goalie under the age of 22, surpassing Dominic Roussel, who played 17 games for the team as a 21-year-old in the 1991-92 season.

The Flyers were the league’s best faceoff team this year at 54.6 percent. It’s the second year in a row they’ve led the league in the category after going 54.7 percent last season. Sean Couturier led the NHL in faceoff percentage at 59.6 pct (min 50 faceoffs) while Claude Giroux was fourth (59.0 pct).

The Flyers last won a playoff series in 2012 when they took the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals vs. Pittsburgh in six games. The team’s current drought of seven seasons without a series win is the longest in franchise history. The Flyers have four players remaining on their roster from the 11-12 team – Claude Giroux, Jake Voracek and Sean Couturier have been with the team ever since, while James van Riemsdyk departed the Flyers following that run and played six seasons in Toronto before coming back to Philadelphia in 2018.

Giroux and van Riemsdyk were each part of Philadelphia’s 2010 Stanley Cup Final run, which marked van Riemsdyk’s rookie season and Giroux’s second NHL campaign. Giroux had 10 goals and 11 assists in that playoff season, including the overtime game-winner in Game 3 of the Final vs. Chicago. Tampa Bay defenseman is the only other remaining player from that team that is still active in this year’s Stanley Cup Playoffs. Flyers assistant coach Ian Laperriere was also a part of that team, as was NBC rinkside analyst Brian Boucher.
