One of the most popular tourist attractions in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, is the Corcovado. The Corcovado is a mountain and the name means ‘hunchback’ in Portuguese. Previously, the mountain was named Pinaculo da Tentacao, which means ‘Pinnacle of Temptation ’. The Corcovado Mountain is world famous for the huge Christ the Redeemer statue crowning its peak. From the peak tourists can enjoy sweeping panoramic views of the sea and mountains. With outstretched arms the statue of Christ the Redeemer is 98 feet high and is situated on a 26-feet pedestal. The statute weighs 1,145 tons, and it also has a chapel which can accommodate 150 people. This monument celebrated its 84th anniversary in 2014. It was inaugurated on 12th October, 1931, on the day of Our Lady of Aparecida (national patroness). Once there, they will have a spectacular view over the city, Gaunabara Bay, and the famous beaches, as well as a close-up look at one of Rio’s, and the world’s, iconic images: the nearly 100-foot tall statue known in Portuguese as Christo Redentor, Christ the Redeemer—the largest Art Deco statue in the world. The visitors to Corcovado may not even notice the forest they pass through on their way to the top. That would be a shame, because the forest is a rare jewel, an example of the Mata Atlântica, the Atlantic rainforest that once covered an area twice the size of Texas along Brazil’s eastern seaboard. Less than 10 percent of that rich forest ecosystem remains, including about 15 square miles surrounding Corcovado, protected since 1961 as Tijuca National Park. The story of the creation of the park may reveal part of Rio’s future as well. The forest is a re-creation rather than a remnant of the one that greeted the first Portuguese explorers. By the mid-19th century, the Atlantic Forest surrounding Rio had been cut down to make way for sugar and coffee plantations. In 1861, the Brazilian king, Dom Pedro II, realized the deforestation would affect the city’s supply of drinking water. He ordered the continent’s first reforestation program.

The development of the favela into a tourist destination is seen as part of the so-called reality tours phenomenon and of the global circulation of the favela as a trademark. The methodology included different strategies: long interviews with qualified informants, field observation, and participant observation in different tours. The article concludes with some thoughts on my own research experience on such a polemic field of investigation. Las muestras fueron recolectadas y analizadas siguiendo el método TO-15 de la US-EPA. El isopreno fue seleccionado como in- dicador de las emisiones biogénicas, y el benceno y el tolueno como indicadores de las emisiones vehiculares primarias. Se encontraron concentraciones de isopreno, benceno y tolueno en los intervalos 0.39 a 2.32 µg m–3, 2.27 a 10.16 µg m–3, y 5.21 a 21.83 µg m–3, respectivamente. También se calcularon las reactividades cinéticas y mecánicas de estos compuestos para estimar su contribución a la formación de oxidantes atmosféricos. Las concentraciones de benceno y tolueno muestran que las emisiones urbanas impactan de manera considerable las áreas verdes de la ciudad. Brazil’s urbanization, compounded with rampant drug use, lack of governance, and inadequate policing has resulted in dire levels of domestic violence fueled by a triad of militias, gangs, and drug cartels. In response to Brazil’s security challenges, the Unidade de Policia Pacificadora (UPP) was created to pacify urban areas that have been lost to the state for several decades.     Places to visit in Rio de Janeiro - Brazil ! Beautiful Views 1. Corcovado Perched atop the 710 meter (2,330 feet) high peak of Corcovado Peak, the statue of “Cristo Redentor” stands with arms outstretched, gazing serenely out over the city. Construction of the statue began in 1922 during the heyday of the Art Deco movement, and the concrete and soapstone statue is considered the largest statue designed in the genre in the world. Most visitors take a vertical cog train to reach the base of the summit. From there, visitors to the monument once had to climb hundreds of steps to reach the top. Today, elevators and escalators are available to shorten the trip. 2. Sugarloaf Mountain Rising 400 meters (1,300 feet) above the mouth of Guanabara Bay, Sugarloaf mountain is a monolith of quartz and granite that visitors can crest via a glass-walled cable car known as a “bondinho” or “teleférico.” The cable car departs every 20 minutes from the base of Babilônia hill and climbs to the top of the Morro da Urca hill. From there, visitors can take a second cable car up to the mountain’s summit. 3. Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon The “Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas" ïs a favorite spot for joggers and cyclists. Open-air cafés and restaurants along the shore offer stunning views of the lagoon and the beaches beyond. The “Espaço Lagoon “ (Av. Borges de Medeiros) is a nice place where you can find several nice restaurants. Mainly at night it is a mandatory place to visit and enjoy the magnetic view of the lagoon.
