0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Power but no Glory.By Malcolm CameronConfessions of a Faceless Man: Inside Campaign 2010By Paul Howes"In the end, we won. Sort of."So it was in the 2010 Australian election. "But at what cost? A hopelessly divided electorate, a lack of a clear mandate ...".This is a "warts and all" diary of the election campaign by the national secretary of Worker's Union, 's oldest union. Often aided by swear words, it is from a man who "had found myself in the invidious position of having to give my opinion on who should be the prime minister of Australia". But while it gives a few insights and memories of the campaign it sheds little light on the real action of Kevin Rudd's replacement by Julia Gillard. "But despite all the criticism that I and my fellow have copped, it seems to me that we did the right thing." He convinced himself "Rudd's `assassination' was all his own work." He even drafted a set of charges against Kevin to justify expelling him from the party. The feelings of ALP members do not bother Howes. For the ALP members generally, Howe states "Even Costello's harshest critics have to admit that he was a brilliant politician and an excellent Treasurer".ALP members in Kooyong will recall with pleasure Andrew Peacock's disastrous launch of Josh Frydenberg's campaign against the ALP's blind candidate Steve Hurd stating "You'd need to be pretty handicapped not to appreciate this government is dissolving before your eyes daily". Howes is sympathetic "Ugh. It's the sort of comment that, as soon as it flies out of your mouth, you wish you could pull it back. In public life, there are often moments where it would be handy to have a magic remote control so you could press pause, rewind and slap yourself in the face to stop a faux pas before it happens ... I must confess that I like Peacock very much." Faceless men can say anything. And Howes presciently quotes a Melbourne radio station that "there will be a bloodbath in the party over Rudd's removal once the election is finished... and the right of the Labor party will be targeted after the election giving the Opposition yet another free gift". This came to pass in February 2012.Malcolm Cameron12 March 2012

Written by the head of the Australian Workersrsquo; Union, a man accused of removing Kevin Rudd from office and installing Julia Gillard as Prime Minister, this insider's account reveals the astonishing details of the Labor Partyrsquo;s campaign. With details on a day-to-day basis, this work illustrates how the 2010 Australian federal election campaign had more twists, conspiracies, and betrayals than a ripping political thriller.
