Verso Il Cinema Ritrovato Bologna 23 giugno - 1 luglio 2018 XXXII edizione MAIN SPONSOR Verso Il Cinema Ritrovato Per la trentaduesima edizione del Cinema Ritrovato, Bologna sarà ancora più bella e il programma più divertente, appassionante, impossibile, sublime avrebbe detto Peter von Bagh con un solo aggettivo. Come nella migliore tradizione della casa, si offrirà ai nostri occhi il già noto, ma come non si era mai visto, e lo sconosciuto, con il suo sapore di scoperta e sorpresa. Quest’anno, più che mai, sarà eviden- te come Il Cinema Ritrovato sia un festival di ricercatori, e come le loro ricerche, sorrette da sguardi e competenze sempre più sicuri e allenati, portino alla luce tesori inattesi e mettano in moto il circolo (internazionale) virtuoso dell’identificazione e dei restauri. Solo qualche titolo tra i più sorprendenti, solo un’avvertenza: non potete perderli. L’unica copia colorata per imbibizione di Charlot soldato di Chaplin, Il caso Rosentopf di Lubitsch, e frammenti che aprono nuove prospettive: Âmes de fous con Germaine Dulac, Tosca con Francesca Bertini, due corti Disney ritrovati in Norvegia, Empty Socks e Tall Timber… Ancora una volta il programma sarà costruito come una macchina del tempo e dello spazio, nel senso più profondo e sconfinato: dal 1898 a oggi, dalla Cina all’Africa, dall’America Latina all’Europa e agli USA. Si comincia sabato 23 alle 14.30 (ma lo schermo di Piazza Maggiore si accenderà già nelle serate precedenti), si continua fino a sabato 30, e domenica 1° luglio il festival si concluderà con un’intera giornata di proiezioni in una sola sala, l’Arlecchino, per un arrivederci più dolce e disteso, per salutare gli amici, recuperare film perduti durante la settimana e per godere, la sera, di un’ultima proiezione in Piazza. -

1 LOOKING FOR YOUNG JOHN STAHL: SOME BIOGRAPHICAL MYSTERIES UNRAVELLED 2 An undoubted highlight of the 37th Pordenone Giornato del Cinema Muto in October 2018 was the screening of nine of the twelve surviving silent films of John M Stahl (with a tenth, The Woman Under Oath, shown in a short Stahl sound film programme at the Bologna retrospective a few months earlier). October 2019 should complete Pordenone's exhibition of all Stahl's surviving silents with the showing of The Woman Under Oath, One Clear Call and Why Men Leave Home, and a restoration of the one reel of The Wanters that survives. To historians of early Hollywood and silent cinema 2018 was, as one major expert in these areas, enthusiastically proclaimed, “The Year of Stahl”. And there is no doubt that Stahl's recent profile, so low compared with his renown in the 1920s and 1930s, has been significantly raised by recent activity. Part of this activity was a book edited by Charles Barr and myself, The Call of the Heart: John M. Stahl and Hollywood Melodrama (John Libbey Publications, 2018), with essays on every one of the forty two feature films he directed, silent and sound, extant and lost, written by fourteen international scholars and the editors, commissioned and published to coincide with the Pordenone showings. Like the festival itself, it was only possible through the dedicated work of many other people, most obviously the organisers of the festival and film staff at the Library of Congress who unearthed and made suitable for high standard screening with accompanying music several films considered wholly lost, as indeed nearly all of Stahl's silent films were till recently. -
