MUSIC INDUSTRY CONTRACTS This Is a Series
MUSIC INDUSTRY CONTRACTS This is a series of extracts from expert articles about music industry contracts. You are also encouraged to read the three companion articles – Why is it so tough to make a living as a musician and What Do I need to do to get signed? and Explaining the income streams. Record Contract Basics by Michael McCready Be sure to get advice from someone familiar with record contracts (usually an entertainment attorney). In all record contracts, you will be signing an exclusive agreement. This means that you will not be able to record for anyone else other than the record company during the "term" of your contract. The term is how long the contract lasts. Contrary to popular belief, record companies do not sign you and guarantee you seven albums. It may be a seven album deal, but nothing obligates the label to record seven albums. The seven albums means that the record label has the option to record seven albums. Typically, a record company will record one album and see how it does. If it sells well, they will exercise their option to record a second album. If the first album does not do well, the label usually drops you. Record companies require long term option contracts because if the band does do well, the label wants to make sure that the band stays with their company. Since they invested so much and signed the band in the first place, they want to be able to share the success of the band over a long period of time. -

There is the world of pure music, which involves the creative side of things, songwriting. rehearsing, and performing, and there is another world which must come into play IF you truly want people to hear your music...the Music Business. Making music and making a living from your music are not the same thing. When it comes to getting your music into the marketplace you must fasten your seat belt and get exposed to the world of music business. How does it work? From writing your song and copyrighting it to finding a good record producer, getting the job out of the studio, promoting the song, getting a record deal, signing contracts, releasing an album and marketing it, all the way to getting booked for every major gig. You need to know how it works. Did you know that the Supply of Existing Marketable Music Is Greater Than Any Demand For New and Unknown Music? You have to make people aware of your music, and You have to create the demand for it, by getting the attention of the various gatekeepers in the record business and in the media who control the access areas for exposing new music (the record labels, distributors, stores, and live venues, as well as radio, TV, and the print media). No one is sitting at home waiting for you to release your music. -

The Most Punk Thing You Can Do Is Tell the Truth, and for MUNA the Truth Needed to Be Found
The most punk thing you can do is tell the truth, and for MUNA the truth needed to be found. It's not a quick exercise. It takes time; more than two years. If you're as resourceful and intentioned as Katie Gavin, Naomi McPherson and Josette Maskin are, you're not going to lay dormant waiting for answers to reveal themselves. You're going to pursue them, and it's going to be difficult. Sometimes you're not going to have a clue what you're even looking for and the whole might not reveal itself until much later down the line. Six months after they finished touring their 2017 debut album 'About U', the trio found themselves back in LA at an emotional rock bottom. It was quiet. The cheers of adoring crowds were but far-off echoes in the distant past, and with every new day they drifted further from the life they had come to know – the life of a touring band. It was in that moment of loss of purpose and validation that lead songwriter Gavin came up with a song unlike anything she'd written for MUNA before. It was self- aware, yes; a little self-critical, sure; but it was also a positive affirmation to herself. And it was laced with humor. It's called: 'Number One Fan'. “So I heard the bad news,” it begins. “Nobody likes me and I'm gonna die alone in my bedroom, looking at strangers on my telephone…” and the sound of a dead dial tone follows. -
If Youre Not the One Free
FREE IF YOURE NOT THE ONE PDF Jemma Forte | 464 pages | 07 Feb 2014 | Harlequin (UK) | 9781848452961 | English | Richmond, United Kingdom DANIEL BEDINGFIELD – “If You’re Not The One” | FreakyTrigger It was released on 25 November as the third single from his debut studio album Gotta Get Thru This The single entered the top 20 on the majority of charts that it appeared on, including being a number-one hit in the UK Singles Chart[1] and reaching number 15 in the United States. You need to go some kind of populist route. So, about three years ago, I sat down with a Westlife song and tried to write something similar. Bedingfield also admitted that he didn't even want to put the song on If Youre Not the One album. I thought it sounded like Westlife. But she Natasha Bedingfieldhis sister loved it. Women that hear it go all soft and think it's lovely" [5]. However, the track also received some negative feedback. When the song If Youre Not the One released as If Youre Not the One single, it was picked up by radio stations. It was the most added pop song on the radio for the week of 20 February The music video was produced by A1 singer Mark Read. It begins with a series of images of Bedingfield singing in various positions against a black backdrop. When the chorus starts he is seen singing with clouds in the background. The initial sequence is repeated for the second verse. However, half-way through, he starts to write on If Youre Not the One wall. -

With support from friends and fellow Elevator band, Bi- cycle Thieves, Miles took his highly anticipated material on the road. After performing a free gig at Liverpool Music Week, the tour culminated in Kane’s first lone London date at The Water Rats. ‘Inhaler’ was released on November 22nd on Columbia re- cords and is a tribute to Los Angeles’ psychedelic garage group Bonniwell Music Machine - ‘Inhaler’ is an adapta- tion of their 1969 track ‘Mother Nature Father Earth’. “I loved the guitar riff on ‘Mother Nature Father Earth’,” explains Miles. “It’s got a real groove to it and this riff inspired me to build a song around it which then became ‘Inhaler’.” The b-side features a cover version of another of Miles’ vin- tage influences, a dazzling take on Lee Hazlewood’s psych- pop classic, ‘Rainbow Woman’. The record is available as a limited edition 7” vinyl single and includes a special poster. The track will also be avail- able as a digital download. Miles has announced details of a full UK tour in January and March, and will be playing at the Sound City 2011 Launch Party Miles Kane on February 25th at the Kazimier. -
