MATT LEACH - HEAD COACH Matt Leach begins his third season leading the Washington State University Women’s Swimming program after being hired July 19, 2018. In his second season leading the Cougars, Leach continued the impressive trend of posting record- setting times, earning trips to the postseason and success in the classroom. The 2019-20 team set three school-records, recorded 21 Top-10 times, post their second-highest point total at the Pac-12 Confer- ence Championships in the last 13 seasons and saw 10 swimmers earn a trip to the postseason CSCAA National Invitational Championships. Leach also saw four Cougars post 2020 (2021) Olympic Qualifying Times in Lauren Burckel (USA), Mackenzie Duarte (USA), Taylor McCoy (USA) and Mia Zahab (Canada). In the classroom, eight student-athletes were named to the Pac-12 Conference Academic Winter Honor Roll while as a team, WSU earned CSCAA Scholar All-America Team Honors in the fall and capped the school year with a 3.54 Spring Team GPA, the highest semester GPA in the previous 10 years. Leach guided his young Cougar team to a number of accomplishments in his first season at WSU highlighted by producing the program’s first NCAA National Championship participant in sophomore Mackenzie Duarte since 2010. Leach also led the Cougars to the postseason, finishing eighth at the CSCAA National Invitational Championships including an individual title by Linnea Lindberg in the 50 breastroke. The Cougars reached many milestones under Leach in 2018-19, posted ten WSU Top-10 times at the Pac-12 Conference Championships, set two school records in the 100 free and 200 breast through the year, three different swimmers recorded double-digit wins and as a team were ranked second in the Pac-12 based on improvement from the year prior, according SwimSwam.com. Academically, WSU earned CS- CAA Scholar All-America Team honors (Team GPA of 3.00+) in the fall and spring, three swimmers earned CSCAA Scholar All-American honorable mention accolades and eight earned Pac-12 All-Academic honors including a pair of first-team selections. Leach joined WSU after spending the previous three years at Indiana State where he started the swimming and diving programs in 2015 and began competing in the 2016-17 season. In the program’s second season, Leach was named the 2017-18 Missouri Valley Coach of the Year after guiding the Sycamores to a 13-win campaign that featured a 10-dual match win streak and a record-setting team performance at the Missouri Valley Conference Championships where ISU set school records in every event, highlighted by the program’s first individual conference champion. Nine Sycamores earned All-MVC honors including a trio of first-team selections. Out of the pool, Leach saw his team earn CSCAA Scholar All-American honors for the third straight semester, including the high- est team GPA in the Missouri Valley Conference. Six student-athletes earned MVC All-Academic honors this past season after five earned the same honor in 2016-17. Prior to Indiana State, Leach spent six seasons at the University of Wyoming (2009-15), including the final four seasons as as- sociate head coach and worked extensively with sprint swimmers. Leach helped rewrite the Cowgirl record books, as every sprint event school record was broke during his time on staff. He has also coached sprint swimmers to NCAA and Olympic trials competitions includ- ing two-time All-America selection Kelsey Conci who earned trips to the NCAA Championships in the 100 backstroke and the 50 and 100 freestyle, placing 10th in the 100 backstroke at the 2011 NCAA Championships and ninth at the 2012 championships. Leach arrived at Wyoming from Louisiana State University where he began as a graduate assistant in 2004, and then as a vol- unteer assistant coach for two seasons (2007-09). At LSU, Leach helped guide several athletes to the NCAA Championships, and a top-25 ranking for both the men’s and women’s teams. Leach also served as the head age group coach at Tiger Aquatics from 2006-09 where he was named the 2007 Louisiana State Age Group Coach of the Year for his efforts in his first season. A native of Portland, Ore., Leach swam collegiately at Indiana University (2000-04), where he was a was a four-time All-Amer- ican, helped the Hoosiers to a Big Ten Conference Championship in the 200 medley relay as a senior and still holds school records as a member of the 200 freestyle relay and 400 medley relay. Leach also performed on the national stage, as he took part in the 2000 and 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials. Leach graduated from Indiana in December 2004 with a bachelor’s degree in environmental management. He received his mas- ter’s degree, also in environmental planning and management, from LSU in May 2007. Leach and his wife, Katie welcomed their daughter Eloise in 2020.

From record student-athlete academic achievement to record-setting fundraising, from transformative facility projects to innovative student-welfare programming, Chun has had an immediate impact on WSU. Under his leadership, Cougar programs have reached NCAA Championships in six sports, while student-athletes have collected 28 All-America certificates, 79 All-Conference, 461 Academic All-Conference selections and four conference cham- pions. Chun has instituted programs to benefit student-athlete welfare, including improvements to mental health awareness, as well as a commitment to diversity and inclusion initiatives, while working closely with WSU’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and the Black Student-Athlete Association. WSU’s commitment to mental health awareness, under initiatives led by Chun, resulted in WSU Athletics being awarded the Washington State Psychological Association’s Public Citizen Award in 2018. Additional accomplishments for Chun include the development of UNLEASH, a strategic plan for the advancement of WSU Athletics, while in July of 2020, he began a four-year term on the prestigious NCAA Division I Council, a high-level group responsible for the day-to-day decision-making for Division I. For 2020-21, he will also co-chair the newly formed Pac-12 Social Justice & Anti-Racism Advisory Group. Most importantly, the academic performance of WSU student-athletes has set or tied program highs for cumulative GPA in each of the last five semesters enter- ing the Fall of 2020, including a department record 3.35 semester GPA in the Spring of 2020. WSU also posted its highest Graduation Success Rate ever in 2018-19. On the field of play, the Cougars have seen program-best performances from multiple sports. Football enters the 2020 season having gone to five-consecutive bowl games for the first time in school history, while women’s soccer reached the College Cup in 2019 for the first time. Women’s enters 2020 with four-straight NCAA appearances while men’s basketball in 2019-20 had its most wins since 2011-12 and won its Pac-12 Tournament opening round for the first time since 2009. WSU improved on both totals in 2018- 19 and in 2019-20, WSU Athletics raised a program-record $27 million in overall giving. Prior to the 2019-20 academic year, WSU completed fundraising for Project: Back to Omaha, a $10 million renovation of our baseball stadium, the first athletics facility at WSU funded completely by private donations and set for completion in November 2020. Prior to WSU, Chun spent the prior five and a half years leading Florida Atlantic University Athletics and the previous 15 years at Ohio State University in a multitude of roles from 1997 through 2012, culminating as the executive associate athletics director. During his time at Florida Atlantic University athletics, Chun guided the Owls to unprecedented successes across academics, athletics, student-athlete develop- ment and fundraising. His top priority upon arriving at FAU was academics, which saw tremendous growth. Entering the 2017-18 academic year, FAU student-athletes posted a combined GPA above 3.0 for each of the previous four semesters, a first in school history. School records were also posted for Graduate Success Rate (GSR) and Academic Progress Rate (APR) in 2016-17. Chun’s focus on the complete student-athlete is highlighted by the 2016 National Association of Academic Advisors (N4A) Model Practices Award, awarded to FAU for displaying best practices in their programming for student-athletes. FAU was honored for its work with the football program. Along with the academic improve- ment, the FAU athletics department developed a comprehensive life skills program, featuring career services and a speaker’s program, as well as a concerted effort to provide community service to the South Florida area. Under Chun’s leadership, FAU athletics rose to some of its greatest heights, winning multiple championships, individual and team, and numerous national and conference awards. Owls’ football won its final 10 games of 2017 to finish 11-3 with a bowl victory over Akron while receiving votes in the final national poll. Chun has earned a reputation as an outstanding fundraiser with record successes at two institutions. In December 2015, the university announced the largest single gift in its history, $16 million from the Schmidt Family Foundation. In addition to the naming rights gift, two separate $5 million naming gifts were included in the project for a sports medicine center and academic center. Additional facility improvements at FAU during Chun’s time included the opening of the $800,000 FAU Complex, the addition of sand volleyball courts for the beach volleyball program while the FAU Varsity Soccer Field opened following renovations and enhancements. Revenue generation has been at the forefront of initiatives for Chun. In 2013, FAU agreed to a 10-year agreement with Learfield Sports as its exclusive corporate sponsorship sales unit. The partnership was expected to generate $25 million in revenues over the life of the agreement. In 2015, FAU extended its agreement with Adidas for $1.2 million. On a national level, Chun has served on the NCAA Baseball Rules Committee and was also named to the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) executive committee in 2016.
