Research Article FIFTY YEARS of TRACKING the CHINESE WILDMAN The RELICT HOMINOID INQUIRY 1:118-141 (2012) Research Article FIFTY YEARS OF TRACKING THE CHINESE WILDMAN ZHOU Guoxing* Beijing Museum of Natural History, Beijing, People’s Republic of China ABSTRACT. Upright walking, two meters in height, hands hanging down straight to knees, huge feet, bulging eyeballs, human face and black-red long hair – all of these are the macroscopic features shared in common by the Shennongjia Wildman, the Man Bear in both Jiulong and Yuanbao Mountains, the Himalayan Yeti (the Snowman), the American sasquatch (Bigfoot) and other legendary wildmen across the world. But do they really exist? As an anthropologist, the author has been watching this matter since the late 1950’s. He has collected information of relevance for analysis and study, and conducted field research. Having covered almost all the main areas where the Wildman has been encountered in China, he has collected a great amount of first-hand information and materials, including the supposed specimens. Furthermore, as a member of the executive board of the International Society of Cryptozoology, the author has maintained exchanges with other prominent Wildman researchers around the world, and has traveled to North America and the former Soviet Union to make direct contacts with the local Wildman trackers. He has gone through an interesting evolution in his search for the Wildman – from acceptance with reservation, to vacillation with doubt, to basically denial. Now he is trying to conclude what he has experienced in the last 50 years in the form of an academic work, Tracking the Wildman for Fifty Years. Here is a summary of the several instances that largely dissuade the author on the matter of the existence of the so-called Chinese Wildman. Matthews JM*, Petrykowski B and Davidorf F Havener Eye Institute, The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, USA Abstract Background: The use of topical anesthesia in the outpatient setting by Ophthalmologists has seen a dramatic increase since the development of antivegf medications. Each year, there are an estimated 6-7 million anti-vegf injections performed in the United States. People with red hair have a mutation of the MC1R gene, which has been associated with decreased effectiveness of local anesthesia. The purpose of this communication is to alert the ophthalmology community of potential for inadequate anesthesia for intraocular injections Methods: IRB was obtained through OSU IRB. 175 patients receiving intravitreal injections were randomly surveyed to determine incidence of poor analgesia with injections. Results: Overall, 19/175 patients were found to have decreased effectiveness of local anesthesia. We found a surprisingly high incidence (10.5%) of patients who require increased amounts of local anesthesia than is commonly used in those with natural red/auburn hair. Conclusion: We encourage ophthalmologists who use local anesthesia for their patients to include an assessment of their response to dental anesthesia. These individuals need to be identified who have had previously bad experiences with poor responses to local anesthesia. We recommend using twice the amount of topical anesthesia in these patients. As shown in Figure 1, the county borders the city of Chongqing (䟽ᒶᐲ) to the south and Shaanxi Province (䲅㾯ⴱ) to the north. It has an area of 3,586 km2 and a population of about 4.7 million residents (Hubei Province Annals Committee 2017). The general consensus is that it is a Mandarin dialect (LAC 2012). However, there have been debates on the proper classification of this dialect as belonging to the Jianghuai Mandarin group (⊏␞ᇈ䈍) (e.g. Coblin 2005,X.B.Liu2007)ortothe Southwestern Mandarin group (㾯ইᇈ䈍) (e.g. Ting 1996,X.C.Liu2005,L.Li2009). Most reports emanate from mountainous regions of northern Myanmar (primarily Kachin State) where wildmen appear to inhabit montane forests. Wildman tracks are described as superficially similar to human (Homo sapiens) footprints, and about the same size to almost twice the size of human tracks. Presumptive pressure ridges were described in one set of wildman tracks. Accounts suggest wildmen are bipedal, 120-245 cm in height, and covered in longish pale to orange-red hair with a head-neck ruff. Wildmen are said to utter distinctive vocalizations, emit strong odors, and sometimes behave aggressively towards humans. Published accounts of wildmen in Myanmar are largely based on narratives provided by indigenous informants. We found nothing to indicate informants were attempting to beguile investigators, and consider it unlikely that wildmen might be confused with other large mammals native to the region.
