John Marshall High School Alumni Association Newsletter 3939 Tracy Street, Los Angeles, California 90027 Spring 2018 Volume 38 • Issue 1 Our 2018 Distinguished Alumnus is Nobel Prize Winner Dr. Barry C. Barish

or the first time in the 87-year history of John Marshall High School, a Barrister has won the Nobel Prize for Physics! Dr. Barry Clarke Barish, FClass of Winter 1954, shares the 2017 Nobel Prize with two colleagues for “decisive contributions to the LIGO detector and the observation of gravitational waves.” Dr. Barish and his colleagues, Rainer Weiss and Kip S. Thorne, were selected by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in October of 2017. Dr. Barish is Linde Professor Emeritus of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California, Berkeley in 1957, and his Ph.D, also from Berkeley, in 1962. He began his career at Cal Tech in 1963 as a Research Fellow, and was an Assistant Professor, then Associate Professor there. He was named a full Professor of Physics in 1972. He became the director of the LIGO Laboratory at Cal Tech in 1997 and served in that capacity until 2005. LIGO stands for “Laser Interferometer Gravitational- Wave Observatory.” It is for this LIGO project that Dr. Barish won the Nobel Prize Dr. Barry C. Barish W’54 in Physics. But before he became world-famous for his achievements, Barry Barish was a shy student who attended Micheltorena Elementary, Thomas Starr King Junior High, and Marshall. We asked Dr. Barish some questions about his work and about his time at Marshall. continued on page 4... Marshall Wins L.A. City Football Championship! by Peter Arbogast S’72, School Sports Historian For only the second time in school history, Marshall’s varsity football team won a post-season playoff championship, taking home the L.A. City title in Division Three with a convincing 62-21 win over Verdugo Hills in early December in a game played at El Camino College in Torrance. The 2017 team joins that of 1982 in winning official championships in the sport, while the undefeated 1942 squad was named City Champion by a panel of expert writers and broadcasters following that season. There were no playoffs that year due to World War II. This team was led by City Coach of the Year Clay Johnston, and the City Player of the Year, running back Johnny Hernandez, who actually set an all-time Marshall career record with most passes caught during his four years at JMHS. Placekicker Jack Wakefield was named the City Kicker of the Year, and quarterback Daniel Soto, who wound up his career at Marshall as one of the top three rated signal callers of all time, throwing for 3200 yards and 37 touchdowns, being honored as the Northern League Offensive Player of the season. There were seven Barristers named to all-league teams including four named to the All-City First Team, running back Brian Cuevas, Wide Receiver Rynee Rangel, Offensive lineman Chris Montenegro and Linebacker Gary Chew. Wideouts Doug Garcia and Matt Reyes made the Second Team All-City squad. The Varsity and the JV team each finished in second place in the Northern League, and each defeated old time rival Belmont in the season’s opening game on the road, along with varsity league wins against Wilson, Franklin, Sotomayor and Lincoln. continued on page 9...

1. When did you first start becoming interested in Physics? When did you know that it would be your life’s work? The first memory I have of ‘thinking’ like a physicist was when I was about 10 years old. Like most kids, I was curious about the world around me, how things worked and why. But my memory highlights one event when I was curious about a physics or physical phenomena. My life as a scientist began with the following question: Since ice is made of water, why, when you cool it until it freezes, should it float on water? I understood why a cork floats on water (it is lighter), or why a coin sinks in water (it is heavier), but why should ice, made from water, float? I asked my father. He couldn’t answer me! That was the first time I can recall when my father couldn’t answer my question. So, I asked others, tried to find it in books, etc. That is very much ‘acting like a physicist.’ Trying to understand how nature works, by asking questions, reading books, or finally, by doing research to find out. Once I learned that ice floats because water expands a little bit when it freezes, I had the answer. But, that only leads to the next question! Why does water expand when it freezes? That turns out to be harder to answer, but that is the wonder of science and how science is done. You ask and answer one question, and that often leads to new and even more interesting questions, and so on. My natural development as a scientist finally found its home in physics as a freshman in college.

2. Did you take Physics at Marshall? Who was the teacher? No. I did not study physics at Marshall, but was good at and learned mathematics and that led me to becoming a scientist. Actually, I thought I would be an engineer when I graduated from Marshall. After graduating from Marshall, I entered the University of California in Berkeley as an Engineering student, but fell in love with physics after my first semester.

3. What is your favorite Marshall memory? My favorite memory was not a specific event, but rather the overall environment and the friends I made at John Marshall. I went to Micheltorena Elementary School, Thomas Starr King Junior High School, then came to Marshall High. I was a shy kid, but felt comfortable at John Marshall from the beginning. I made good and life-long friends. I played sports at Marshall – B football and cross country, neither of which I was very good at. My real passion was tennis and I played and lettered on the Marshall High team all three years in high school. (I still have my letterman sweater with its three stripes).

4. What activities/clubs were you in at Marshall? My extra-curricular activities were focused on tennis. In addition to playing on the tennis team in season, I went to the Griffith Park tennis courts after school most days, off- season and during the summer to practice and play tennis. I made the Los Angeles Schools “All City” tennis team and I was very proud of that.

5. What was your favorite class? Of all my classes, I always enjoyed Mathematics the most. Learning Solid Geometry, Trigonometry, Algebra, etc. at Marshall tapped my aptitudes to become a scientist and prepared me well for becoming a good science student in college.

6. Who was your favorite teacher? My favorite teacher was Mr. Wheeler, the tennis coach.

7. What are your hobbies? I wasn’t passionate about any particular hobbies, but I had a modest stamp collection, played chess, did puzzles. I followed sports and read the sports page first and in detail every day. continued on page 5...

Page 4 8. What advice would you give our current Marshall students? High School is a very special time in your lives. Some of your high school friends will become friends for life. You are at an age where your school experience is very individual, and you can pick what you like to do beyond academics; it might be sports, or science, or the arts, or whatever. High School is a time when you should try new things that can help you begin to figure out what you want to do with your lives. Enjoy it and make the most of it!

9. How do you feel about being selected as the 2018 Distinguished Alumnus? Since I was awarded the Nobel Prize last fall, I have had the pleasure of being contacted and reconnected with some relatives, old friends, students and colleagues. This has been a wonderful way to bring my life together, not just my achievement of winning the Nobel Prize. In addition to the individuals from my past, It is very special for me to be recognized by Marshall High as the 2018 Distinguished Alumnus, especially because I also was very recently contacted by the Chancellor of UC Berkeley (Cal) and she informed me that I have been named “Cal Alumnus of the Year” The distinctions of both my high school and university naming me to these honors truly completes the experience of bringing my whole life together.

Dr. Barish will be the Keynote Speaker at the Class of 2018 Commencement Ceremony on Thursday, June 7 at the Greek Theatre. On that day, the alumni association will celebrate Dr. Barish at a luncheon to be held at Les Freres Taix Restaurant. The order form for luncheon tickets is below. Page 5 Letters To The Editor...

Dear Editor...

My name is Harter and I’m the author of the new book “Mr. Novak An Acclaimed Tele- vision Series” which covers the ground breaking, multi award winning NBC dramatic show about high school life. It aired from 1963-1965 and the pilot was filmed entirely at John Marshall High School in December 1962. During the next two seasons many exterior scenes were shot at Marshall and many students appeared as extras. The series starred James Franciscus as teacher John Novak with Dean Jagger as Principal Albert Vane. A few years back I was able to place an ad seeking any alumni’s memories of the show. Several former students replied and were most helpful on the book. This year, Warner Home Video will be releasing the first season of Mr. Novak (30 episodes) which WILL contain the pilot. I’m sure that any alumni who were students at the school during those years will remember the show and the filming and might be interested in the new book. The book’s website is https://mrnovakbook.com/

Sincerely, Chuck Harter

Page 6 John Marshall High Alumni Association Sponsorships Sought

The Alumni Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to serving the students and programs at JMHS. For almost 40 years we have provided financial support whenever possible. However, as the requests from the school increase while the school district’s budget decreases, we do not have enough resources to assist every program that asks for our help. Our limited income limits the amount we can donate. So, in order to maximize the dollars we can give, we are instituting a Sponsorship Campaign. If you can help us with the association’s expenses, that would free up more funds to be available to give to the school. Donations may be tax-deductible. (Please see your tax advisor.) Here is a list of the anticipated expenses for this year. You may donate any amount to any project. Should you wish to sponsor one or more, that would allow us to re-focus those budgeted funds to school projects. We will acknowledge your contribution in the next newsletter, or you may remain anonymous.

Page 7 Academic Decathlon Report for 2018

The John Marshall Academic Decathlon Team transitioned to a new coach this year. With the retirement of Coach Larry Welch last year, the team was guided this year by Michael Jones, who was co-coach with Mr. Welch in 2003. Mr. Jones, who teaches Economics, used this year to start fresh with a group of 9th and 10th graders, working with them to familiarize themselves with the Decathlon’s procedures and preparing them for competition next year. Team members this year are Ben Bryant, Joshua Gomez, Vahe Hasratyan, Yuebin Huang, Regina Ortiz, and Langston Prince. Usually, there are nine team members but three of the students who originally signed up resigned. So, our students were eligible for individual awards but not team awards, and they were not eligible to compete at State. The competition was held on two consecutive Saturdays, January 27 and February 3, at Roybal High School in downtown Los Angeles. A total of 67 LAUSD schools competed, with 600 student decathletes taking tests, giving speeches and interviews, and taking part in the Super Quiz, the only event open to the public. The awards ceremony was held on Sunday, February 11 at 1pm at Belmont High School. Our students won a total of ten awards, beginning with the Leadership Award earned by Ben Bryant for his participation in the Department of Water and Power’s HIPP (High Intellectual Preparedness) Workshop prior to the competition. Subject Awards include:

Ben Bryant: Honorable Mention in Literature Top Scorer on Marshall’s team Joshua Gomez: Gold Medal for Interview Gold Medal for Speech Vahe Hasratyan: Honorable Mention for Essay Bronze Medal for Speech Yuebin Huang: Honorable Mention for Essay Bronze Medal for Math Langston Prince: Silver Medal for Speech

In addition, this year all team members were awarded a Certificate of Participation by the Los Angeles Unified School District.

The Alumni Association congratulates these fine young people for their commitment to the program and representing Marshall so well.
