Date Department of English iii Abstract of ASYLUMS, ALIENS, AND DISABILITIES IN CHARLES BROCKDEN BROWN’S GOTHIC NOVELS by Sarah Eleonora Faye This thesis focuses on Charles Brockden Brown’s ambiguous use of disabilities in an attempt to understand Brown’s stance on the Early Republic’s nativist debates. While Brown’s representations of disabilities mimic the tropes of nativist politico-medical rhetoric, they also push readers into identifying with flawed characters and questioning nativist intolerance. Brown debunks the simplistic worldview of the nativists, leading his readers into considering that they might already be degenerated physically and mentally, that we cannot separate ourselves from the Other, and that refusing to accept human imperfection means creating a society of unattainable norms. EPILOGUE………………………………………………………………………..…110 Works Cited…………………………………………………………………………….116 vi 1 Chapter 1 INTRODUCING THE CONTRADICTORY TIMES AND NOVELS OF CHARLES BROCKDEN BROWN For someone who wants to write original American literature “to exhibit a series of adventures, growing out of the condition of our country” (Brown, Edgar Huntly 3), Charles Brockden Brown oddly ends most of his gothic novels with the departure of his heroes and heroines (Arthur Mervyn, Clara Wieland, and Constantia Dudley) from America to Europe. This oddity is just one of the difficulties that readers encounter when reading his novels since Brown always seems to be articulating one belief while illustrating another. In his four major novels, Edgar Huntly; or, Memoirs of a Sleep- Walker (1799), Wieland; or the Transformation (1798), Ormond; or the Secret Witness (1799), and Arthur Mervyn; or, Memoirs of the Year 1793 (1798-1799), Brown both illustrates and rejects the values of his society. While Brown’s representation of physical disability as a punishment for failing to embrace the Early Republic’s values of reason, self-restraint, and common sense show him as potentially upholding his society’s values, some of his plots depict mental disabilities in ways that blur the lines between the rational and the irrational. As we will see, disability theory helps to make sense of Brown’s critical illustration of the values of his time, which then sheds light on the contradictions that readers feel when they read the novels. In turn, exploring the origin of these internal contradictions reflects the many paradoxes of the period when Brown wrote his novels: 2 the years between 1798 and 1801 were a contradictory time when people wanted to define what it meant to be American by merging pre-Revolutionary ideals with turbulent world politics, epistemological philosophy, and medicine as a social cure. The Early Republic of the 1790s inherited a comparable sense of world mission that Revolutionary America received from the Puritans’ ideal of becoming a shining example for the world. However, the mission of the 1790s transformed America into a place of refuge. In Common Sense (1775-76), Thomas Paine articulates one of the ideals that the new nation would embrace in its Revolutionary rhetoric: America was to be an “asylum for the persecuted lovers of civil and religious liberty from every part of Europe” (Paine, 24, emphasis in the original). Paine’s document paints America as an exceptional place with a world mission, which can be found again in the documents such as “The Declaration of Independence” stating the egalitarian tenet that “all men are created equal” (Jefferson 8). While echoes of this rhetoric of America as an asylum continue to shape the concept of Americanness to this day, we can spot a shift in emphasis just a few years after the Revolution. In “Information to Those Who Would Remove to America,” published in 1784, Benjamin Franklin qualifies the openness of Paine’s asylum. While he reiterates that “strangers are welcome… and every one will enjoy securely the profits of his industry,” Franklin also underlines the fact that only those who are willing to be industrious and do not expect to enjoy the feudal inequalities of Europe will be able to make it in the United States (464). The rhetoric of the 1790s, while still upholding the Revolutionary ideals of America as an exceptional place of civil liberties and the Franklinian beliefs that America makes people exceptional because it 3 rewards them for being industrious and independent, was shaped by international turmoil and the increasing waves of immigrants coming to the United States. Again, the openness of Paine’s asylum had to be re-qualified. The anxious question became: how can we keep America and the American people exceptional when so many European radicals and potential enemies to the Republic are mixing with the Anglo-American population? Even worse, how can the very idea of America as a place superior to others survive when some Americans themselves are not the rational, self-restrained, and hard-working people described by Franklin and therefore fail to uphold the standards of Americanness? While the belief that America is an exceptional space with exceptional people continued to shape what it meant to be American in the 1790s, a growing anxiety about foreign and inner degeneration contributed to the definition of American identity through binaries: American/alien, rational/irrational, healthy/degenerate. European turmoil such as the Irish Rebellion of 1798 and the French Revolution (1789-1799) brought fleeing radical Europeans to the United States, which intensified the fear towards unruly foreigners importing radical ideas from Europe. Indeed, the nativist crisis of 1798-1801, best illustrated by the Alien and Sedition Acts of 1798 that increased the President’s power to arrest citizens and deport foreigners with radical political ideas, was a result of the American anxieties of seeing European radicals – in particular the Irish – become politically active in the Early Republic (Durey 177, 248). As Michael Durey demonstrates in Transatlantic Radicals and the Early American Republic, European radicals were coming to America as a refuge from legal persecution, treason trials, and as a land of hope where they could implement the radical changes they had 4 failed to bring to their native countries. However, creating a new life in the United States did not always pan out, and some radicals became “rogues” who stole or dealt in forgery (Durey 160). These were certainly not the men Franklin pictured in “Information to Those Who Would Remove to America,” and nativist propaganda, using the rhetoric of human perfectibility found in philosophical and medicinal works, depicted them as the worst threat against the United States.     Constructing Indigeneity: Postcolonial Dynamics in Charles Brockden Brown's Monthly Magazine and American Review Steven Frye Charles Brockden Brown was the first professional author in the United States, one of the early lights in the tradition of the American novel, and the founder and major contributor to a number of early American periodicals such as The Monthly Magazine and American Review and The Literary Magazine and American Register. In this regard, he provides a gauge of the conflicts, tensions, and issues that characterize American culture in the decades following the Revolutionary War. Brown was born in Philadelphia in 1771 in the midst of increasing political conflict. The son of Quaker parents, he experienced both religious training and exposure to the practical realities of eighteenth-century urban mercantile culture. His father, Elijah, entertained radical political sympa­ thies, but like other Quakers he did not actively support the Revolution. The family business suffered as a result, and Brown grew up in an environment where both Christian and political idealism clashed in a conflict of ambivalent values. Brown reached early adolescence as the war came to a close, and after an education in law he embarked upon the precarious career as a man of letters. His literary efforts lasted for about a decade—from 1792 to 1802—a period following the constitutional crisis between Federalists and Anti-Federalists, but a time still reflecting many of its ideological tensions. Brown's editorial work in The Monthly Magazine and American Review reflects the temper of the age, mirroring the uncertainty of a nation split by political battles and party faction, by the conflicts that naturally arise as a new nation attempts to construct a cultural identity through the appropriation and modification of imperial influ­ ences.

The first to go was also the most widely famous. Emerson reached greater depths of thought; Whittier touched the problems of the nation’s life more deeply; Holmes came personally more before the public; Lowell was more brilliant and varied; but, taking the English-speaking world at large, it was Longfellow whose fame overshadowed all the others; he was also better known and more translated upon the continent of Europe than all the rest put together, and, indeed, than any other contemporary poet of the English-speaking race, at least if bibliographies afford any test. Add to this that his place of residence was so accessible and so historic, his personal demeanor so kindly, his life so open and transparent, that everything really conspired to give him the highest accessible degree of contemporary fame. There was no literary laurel that was not his, and he resolutely declined all other laurels; he had wealth and ease, children and grandchildren, health and a stainless conscience; he had also, in a peculiar degree, the blessings that belong to Shakespeare’s estimate of old age,—“honor, love, obedience, troops of friends.” Except for two great domestic bereavements, his life would have been one of absolutely unbroken sunshine; in his whole career he never encountered any serious rebuff, while such were his personal modesty and kindliness that no one could long regard him with envy or antagonism.

    Charles Brockden Brown's Contagious Unreliability BEVERLY LYON CLARK, Wheaton College Modern novels like Ulysses or The Sound and the Fury reflect our sense of the world as increasingly fragmented and normless when they reject the comfortable supports of traditional fictional techniques. The use of less reliable narrators and of more open endings, for instance, distinguishes modern fiction from much eighteenth- and nineteenth-century fiction, although the difference is less pronounced in American fiction, in its context of what Richard Chase has called a "culture of contradictions."1 It may not be surprising, then, that traditional novelistic techniques are absent from the works of the eighteenth-century Charles Brockden Brown, whose works demonstrate the unreliability of the senses in providing knowledge. Such flouting of traditional techniques may be appropri­ ate in the American tradition. But it also seems surprisingly modern. Brown reveals the unreliability of the senses in a variety of ways: through the symbolic double, through multiple perspectives, through the narrative breaks and shifts in mode that occur at least twice in each of his four major novels, and, finally, through what can be called the contagious unreliability of parallel or juxtaposed scenes. I can illustrate all four methods by examining Edgar Huntly (1799), and then go on to examine other occurrences of the fourth, which has not previously been studied. The main way in which Edgar Huntly's reliability as character and narrator is impugned is through the use of the symbolic double, and there has been extensive discussion of this doubling.2 Clithero not only provides Hundy with the example of a person attempting to cope with his own irrational impulses but also furnishes a symbol, a double who reflects aspects of Huntly that Huntly is not consciously ready to admit.

The myth makers of civilization's infancy, the story tellers of olden times, the court minstrels, singing of heroic exploits, the old housewives in chimney corners, telling their tales of fairies, ghosts, and goblins, have all made use of the strange, the terrible, and the wonderful. Shelley, as befitted any boy gifted with a lively curiosity and a vivid imagination, was interested in the wonderful, the mysterious, and the strange. He loved to relate wonder tales to his little sisters; and he invented a fabulous tortoise inhabiting Warnham Pond, an equally fabulous snake of great age, and an old alchemist, who lived in the attic of Field Place. These flights of his versatile imagination excited the children and filled their minds with a pleasurable dread.

    The Japanese Journal of American Studies, No. 20 (2009) Fearing American Wilderness: Materialism in Charles Brockden Brown’s Edgar Huntly Kimiyo OGAWA* It is remarkable that the proceedings of the populace, on these occasions, were carried on with decorum, and regularity. They were not ebullitions of a thought- less mob, but for the most part, planned by leading men of character and infl uence, who were friends to peace and order. These, knowing well that the bulk of man- kind, are more led by their senses, than by their reason, conducted the public ex- hibitions on that principle . and its friends, both ridiculous, and odious.1 David Ramsay, who studied medicine in Philadelphia but later became active in politics in South Carolina, expressed a concern about degeneration in his History of the American Revolution (1789). He viewed the future of the American nation as an extension or continuum of European history—the “mob” reminds us of the French Revolution and “reason” of the Enlighten- ment discourse of discipline. Charles Brockden Brown was writing his novel Edgar Huntly in the 1790s when the direction that the new republic was to take was becoming increasingly controversial. On the one hand, the Republi- cans, who had faith in people’s innate integrity, wished to see the new nation based on this principle with minimal state intervention. On the other hand, the Federalists, who viewed human nature as needing external controls to maintain law and order, stressed the importance of following the British model of discipline.
