S, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Born 1928, from Germany, Has Stood at the Forefront of Musical Development Karlheinz Stockhausen, Polar Music Prize Laureate 2001 Ever since his first compositions in the 1950′s, Karlheinz Stockhausen, born 1928, from Germany, has stood at the forefront of musical development. Concurrently, he has regularly found himself in the midst of controversy. While no contemporary composer has generated as much heated discussion as he does, no one can deny Stockhausen’s importance and pivotal role. Before embarking upon his public career, Karlheinz Stockhausen had completed thorough studies in piano and composition with, amongst others, Martin and Messiaen, as well as in languages and philosophy. He enthusiastically joined the group of young composers who felt that it was time to break with the Goebbels era and rediscover pre- 1930 avantgardism and primarily the work of Webern. The result was serialism, which was introduced at the famous Darmstadt summer courses and the Donaueschingen festivals. From their inception Stockhausen was one of the leading personalities associated with these activities. At that time, Stockhausen became acquainted with Professor Werner Meyer-Eppler of the University of Bonn, a physicist who advocated using electronic equipment for generating music, in order to gain complete control of musical and acoustic parameters. These ideas led to the design of the first electronic musical studio at public broadcaster WDR in Cologne. Stockhausen’s early development, with the advent of and even after serialism, can be assessed from his series Klavierstücke I – XI, composed between 1951 and 1957, and Gesang der Jünglinge, which he composed in 1957. The latter work first brought electronic music to the public eye and is still considered to be one of the masterpieces of its kind. At the start of the 1960′s, Stockhausen turned his interest toward live electronics, with works ranging from Mikrophonie I, where a solitary tomtom provides the basic sound, to the magnificent Mixture, in which an entire symphony orchestra is connected to the electronic modification instruments. At the same time, he began exhibiting an interest in oriental philosophy and religion and became a pioneer of world music and the meditative form. This is best illustrated in Hymnen, a work of electronic music, based on songs and national anthems from around the globe. Since 1977, Stockhausen has been working on his soon to be completed, Licht-Oper, the greatest musical endeavour since Wagner’s Ring. In this venture, the days of the week are portrayed individually in varying lengths and with their own special combination of instruments. PO Box 55777, SE-114 83 Stockholm, Sweden. • 2013-Pressrelease-OKTOPHONIE
Park Avenue Armory Adds Two Performances for Karlheinz Stockhausen’s electronic masterpiece OKTOPHONIE, presented in a lunar environment created by Rirkrit Tiravanija Due to Overwhelming Demand Additional Performances Added, March 23 & 25 New York, NY—February 28, 2013—Due to overwhelming initial demand stemming from the 2013 artistic season announcement, Park Avenue Armory announced today the addition of two performances of the New York premiere of Karlheinz Stockhausen’s OKTOPHONIE. Part of Stockhausen’s magnum opus “Licht” (or “Light”) OKTOPHONIE is a trailblazing electronic music experience where the audience is surrounded by eight groups of loudspeakers, enveloping them in a sonic environment. OKTOPHONIE, which will be performed by one of his original collaborators Kathinka Pasveer, exemplifies Stockhausen’s work as a compositional pioneer who grappled with spatial music as he bent the rules and redefined the listening experience. Staging the work as the composer originally intended—in outer space—Rirkrit Tiravanija has been commissioned by the Armory to create a ritualized lunar experience, a floating seating installation within the Armory’s soaring drill hall that heightens the listeners’ octophonic experience and transports them to another realm. The audience will don white cloaks for the journey, carried along by the all- encompassing score, itself a meditation on the transformation from plunging darkness into blinding light. The Armory’s 2013 season will also include WS, a monumental installation by Paul McCarthy; The Machine, a play by one of Britain’s fastest rising young playwrights, Matt Charman, that chronicles Garry Kasparov’s 1997 chess game against IBM’s Deep Blue super-computer, a contest that set man against machine; Massive Attack V Adam Curtis, a new kind of imaginative experience conceived by Adam Curtis and Robert Del Naja mixing music, film, politics, and moments of illusion, performed by Massive Attack and special guests; and Robert Wilson’s powerful new staging of The Life and Death of Marina Abramović.

Lichter - Wasser is a work that constantly attempts to conjugate the contemplation and the paroxism of an ur-element, the so called super formula, with the long sought utopia of the infinite progress of perception faculties (a journey formally began in 1955 with Stockhausen’s composition Gruppen, for three orchestral groups). • Karlheinz Stockhausen's Stage Cycle Licht. Musical Theatre of the World
Interdisciplinary Studies in Musicology 8,2009 © Department o f Musicology, Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznan, Poland AGNIESZKA DRAUS (Krakow) Karlheinz Stockhausen’s stage cycle Licht. Musical theatre of the world ABSTRACT: The main idea of the paper is a presentation of the stage cycle Licht, ab sorbing the composer for over one-third of his active creative life. The question arises as to the generic affiliation of Stockhausen’s opus magnum: close to operatic works by Luciano Berio and Mauricio Kagel or to pop productions of works by Philip Glass? Analysing the subject matter and content of Licht, as well as its message and the means of expression employed, it is difficult not to discern the unification, within a single work, of what might appear to be contrasting musical genres and kinds of thea tre (mystery play, expressionist drama, happening). It is worth remembering that the composer himself does not employ any specific generic term except for Opernzyklus. He often, however, refers to the forms and genres of theatre, cultivated in many differ ent parts of the world, which have inspired him (e.g. in Malaysia, Japan, Bali, the USA), and he admits to the evolution of his views on faith. Can the substance of Licht be reduced to a common denominator? Can the heptalogy be called ‘sacred’ theatre? Or - on the contrary - an extremely profane, ‘pagan’ avant-garde spectacle? KEYWORDS: pitch, Karlheinz Stockhausen, stage-cycle, Licht, world-theatre, The Urantia Book, Michael, Eva, Lucifer, formula-composition, Hans Urs von Balthasar Karlheinz Stockhausen composed a total of around 360 works, minor and monumental, vocal and instrumental, in a variety of forms and genres.
